The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Vincible...

Tribute!! My favorite...

Everyone else is stronger than me. It's a Masochistic game. My tribute demands would be met with derisive laughter. :notsure:

Grr... I'll beat this eventually.

There are no more Minors? Or are they broke?

Or is Maso just designed to not allow very much tribute? I've never tried Maso, so I don't know. :notsure:

On maso, no one will give you money. Period. You can't trade for it, you can't demand it. (With the exception of a couple random late-game minors.)

I have adopted a new strategy which I have high hopes for. It involves hitting control-N until I get a better start than this lonely corner I find myself in.

Boy, that sounds like fun!! :p

Makes me want to run out and start a Maso game...okay maybe not.

Does Crippling give the same?

Sent out on a lone mission for the Fellowship, Miles Naismith falls under the influence of an evil sorcerer. Fighting the evil influence invading Miles soul, Miles flees and retreats to a lone mountain top where he desperately tries to regain his equilibrium through meditation and self-control, relying on his monk skills. After a period of mental regeneration, he takes a vow of silence and returns to his monastery. The monastery gives him the mission of finding a good cause to contribute to. The work will do Miles good as he is low on gold pieces and needs the employment anyway. This becomes Miles temporary priority, but vows to aid the fellowship part-time as new quest is completed. ;)

Plephart cursed the day that he set foot into the Fellowship Halls as he ran for his dear life.

The thundering sound of hoofs behind reminded him of the predicament that he had found himself.

He had been sent on a mission by the village elders to locate Idleprocess, who had vanished after a trip to the woods. As he tracked, he had the misfortune of encountering a GROSS pirate. The pirate evidently knew magic as he vanished before Plephart could send an arrow to his evil heart. Then his world turned black.

When he awoke, he found himself tied up with a very attractive young lady who introduced herself as Darth Babe. It was a strange name but these were strange times. His captors had left him in a cave and as he despaired over his fate, two animals arrived and released them from their bonds. Those creatures also instructed them to head straight for the Fellowship Halls where they would be safe. Darth acted rather strangely as they traveled together, but Plephart thought she was probably still affected by the trauma of her capture.

Their arrival at the Halls was expected. Idleprocess shared regarding the doppelgangers and Plephart was glad to be reunited with his longbow.

He knew he should have known better than to have volunteered for the mission. The smiles of the assembled as he raised his hand were too broad.

Before he left, a mage named Accrest had cast a spell of Haste on him while a dark elf by the name of Gibbie imbued him with a white glow. A hobbit gave him a potion to drink, saying it would strengthen his constitution. He was told to stand at the edge of the woods facing the small knoll to the west and to wait for horsemen to approach. He was then to run quickly towards a narrow valley south-east of the woods.

Glancing around as he ran, he saw that the Death Knights have formed a triangular wave behind him. He knew not how he had managed to keep ahead of the vicious hoofs of the Hell mounts nor escape the swipes from those massive dark steeled swords that they held in their hand. The white glow on his body had somehow afflicted the Death Knights with an insane rage as they now follow him like bees to honey.

Newest installment of the War of the Worlds up.
Still quite a ways behind the narrative of the other races.

"Ray I have one question Who is Darth babe?"

Heheh, Darth. Plephart threw me a curve ball by saying that he hated pirates after I've paired the both of you together. So I put your skills of illusion to good use. And a little guile from a pirate never hurts.

Let's have a discussion here.

What are your Top 3 game winning strategies?

Mine are:

1. Culture Bomb
2. Bribing AIs to war
3. Alpha Strike
The website looks nice. Not much content yet--I'm not sure what we could add. Maybe we could put in some of the introductions? Ray's Friendly Wizard at the Inn, Mad Prophet's arrival, and so on.
My winning strategies would be the same as yours, except rearranged so that bribing AIs to war is first.

By Alpha Strike, I presume you mean taking out all the AI's important planets and starbases in the first turn?
Yes, taking out all AI planets in one turn.

Talking about bribing to war, we have discussed about its power months back. The simplest thing to make the difficulty harder would be to make it much more costly to bribe AIs to war. It would actually make sense as the AI consumes a huge amount of resources in terms of ships everytime they go to war. And they are also drawn out of position, leaving them ripe for an attack by humans.

Wow Barry, you really are a fervent recruiter, I'm seeing your recruting posts all over. Good job! :)

Well, we'll be needing more recruits and points if we hope to stay tops as both MWC and GROSS are or will be adding to their numbers.

MWC seem to have a wonderful magnetic pull even with seemingly minimal recruitment efforts and GROSS will soon assimilate some powerful mutants from Freedom Force.

Other than Cirrhosis, who is part of the 9000 series (player id) of players, the others are all 10000 series players. Our empire has a good mix of experience and youthful vigor. :)

Gerakken's top strategies:

1. Culture Bomb
2. Limited war to achieve dominant position and to leave the victim alive longer to milk later, if necessary.
3. Peaceful dominance via trade routes and tech mongering. Taking the win later on in whatever way handily presents itself. (Usually #1 unless culture victory is turned off.)

I haven't played at a level that seriously challenges me yet, so I've never had to diversify from my one winning strategy:

Turtle - build - crush all that oppose me - flip the rest.

I'm sure at the higher levels I'll need to get more creative.

Diplomacy and tech trading is a large part of my game. I can't recall an AI player ever declaring war on me, they all love me so much. I have no qualms declaring war on the evil baddies, but I never do on the Altarians and Torians.

As an aside, Ray, did you play SFB (or maybe SFC)? Just wondering when you got to using the term 'Alpha Strike'. :)
