The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I'm sure your story was just all in good fun, though.

Miles: No it wasn't. I meant it to be a mean and nasty backhander which would have all the little people leaving the Fellowship in droves. And why wouldn't you ever post in GROSS thread again? Am I missing something?

Am I the first in the Fellowship to realise that we have once again done the super comeback to regain our first position?

Congrats to everyone! :CONGRAT:

Feel free to celebrate with some stories. All of you deserve accolades for this amazing feat of overcoming in 4 days the 150k contributed by the GROSS assimilation of the Freedom Force.

And welcome to the Fellowship, Matthew Downie and FriendJosh!

Matthew, you seem like one who enjoys discussing about strategy, judging by some of your recent posts. Good to have you on board and hope to see you post more.

FriendJosh, the folks in GROSS seem to consider you a mercenary/rogue for switching empires. Well, I hope that's not the case and that you would find a good home here in the Fellowship.

Both gents, come on in and say hi to everyone.

Nice try Chris. You guys were certainly full of joy when the bunch of you defected to GROSS. ;p

End of quote

Nice try at spin there Ray. But the fact is they did not defect to G.R.O.S.S. They got a franchise and disbanded their old empire. A Merger. Slitherin is actually the only defector from the Freedom Force. She/he/it defected back to Anzac. Fear not Killa, your hands are clean.

Congrats to the Fellowship for being back in the lead . . . at least for now. I seem to be stuck around 12,000 and my last game moved me backward in ranking LOL. So, there are some good and fast players around here. I agree with others that the huge and gigantic are sort of overwhelming so I may go back to medium. I was just reminded that it does make for a lower score if one doesn't research all the techs. I got a little hasty in this last game and flipped the last planet with a few techs still to go. Live and learn . . . LOL

Hey Rick,

Great to have you on our thread! You are active in the strategy forum and that's good. You raised a couple of good discussion points over there and I'm going to contibute my 2BCs sometime soon.

Alright, was trying to think about something we can discuss about in this thread. I'm conscious of the fact that some of us may not be into role-playing but would still like to contribute some opinions in this thread.

Ok, here's one.

What is the Number 1 change that you would like to see in Galciv? Limit yourselves to one suggestion.

My top request (for now) is Starbase Governors. That will really help cut down on the micromanagement needed to build up all those SBs especially on bigger maps.
They really should have those, it really helps out the AI, which really needs help with starbase management.

I want to see a more flexible AI teching rather than fixed evaluation of techs. AIs with merchantile party should value trade techs more. Builder AIs like Arceans and Altarians should evaluate the tech tree according to their strategy. The deflector tech is extremely overvalued.

I'm going to cheat now and submit another suggestion.

Traded techs should be acquired after the turn is done rather than immediately. There is no instant acquisition until you have researched instant communications. Even so it should still take a turn to incorporated and spread the tech across an empire and to learn enough about a tech to trade the tech to another race. Unfortunately this has the effect of making masochistic even harder. :(

Gengsta:

You wanted a battle song for WofW with space faring elves and humans, and I tried to fit it into the story, but I'm not sure how good it is; it's only the first draft. I can try again if you dislike it, no problem. ;)

This was just top of my head, stream of thought composing:

Alien Menace

In the tumltuous beginning
Planet Middle-Earth becomes many
An unknown force spreading
United Alliance now expands freely

Mysterious alien menace growing
Empires fill with fear and mistrust
Three empires start communicating
Allies to bring peace in a premptive thrust
Ray brings the Master Ring into play
Aboard the ship Auduin
Conjoins the ring with offensive array
Alien ships fall prey to ruin

Discord grows over empire strategy
Humans, halfings, dwarves, and elves
Put forth their best plans boldly
Everyone arguing in favor of themselves
Agreement is reached
While defenses are breached

Mysterious alien menace growing
Empires fill with fear and mistrust
Three empires start communicating
Allies to bring peace in a premptive thrust
Ray brings the Master Ring into play
Aboard the ship Auduin
Conjoins the ring with offensive array
Alien ships fall prey to ruin

Races of the United Alliance rejoice
As the alien race retreats into another dimension
Master Ring too powerful, they had no choice
One last message, aliens vowing mass destruction

Part five of WotW should be finished tomorrow. I wrote this one with lightning speed and during broken sessions so there probably are some incohesive passages.
Thanks Miles. That's great.

I'm copying now. You'll probably see in the next week. Credits to you in that section of the WotW.

Oh and a level between Crippling and Masochistic. This one rather irks me because it would be so easy to implement.

Hmm... maybe we should come up with a thread for easy-to-implement improvements. Offhand I can think of adjustable event frequency as another easy change that I would really appreciate.

Just one suggestion, Ray? Don't be silly :)
All of us love to make back-breaking suggestions for the developers. Multiplayer anyone? LOL

If I don't restrict you guys to one suggestion each, the Fellowship thread would explode to 1000 posts by tomorrow.

The additional level between Crippling and Maso was my number two suggestion BTW. It became number two because I just played Maso again and found that I may actually get the hang of it. But I would still love an intermediate level.

Miles, that one song will be included in GNN installment of the WotW - it doesn't quite fit as a rally song, but is good for persuading aliens of the cultural superioriyt of the Fellowship.

I wonder if J4 will be around to provide more GNN excerpts.
Ray, the Fellowship thread is already growing at a remarkable speed.

I wonder how long it will take to hit 1000 posts. I think we blew by 500 without noticing it. Either that or I was inattentive.

I will be playing normal difficulty soon so I should be adding some higher scores to our total if I end up winning. :)

I think it would be a fairly easy change. The impression I had was that the AI was exactly the same for Crippling and Masochistic. They just gave the Masochistic players some huge ability bonuses and nerfed trading.

If that's true, then implementing the intermediate level would just be a matter of picking some intermediate bonuses to give to the AI.

Ray, I do think that it's possible to beat maso most of the time. I generally win those games which I play past initial colonization. I think it would be more fun if it were easier, though--sometimes I'm not in the mood for the constant struggle of Maso, but crippling is just too easy after you've played maso several times.

Edit: the first two paragraphs here were in response to a question asked by someone else, who has since edited their own post to delete that question. So I'm not talking to myself.
A second edit because I can't type.

If it weren't for the forum I would be completely in the dark about galciv strategies, at least for a long while. So crippling and masochistic are close in terms of overall AI strategy? I'll have to remember that if I ever get to that level; I'm struggling on normal, but I think I can beat it now, with a few cheese tactics of course. ;)

Edit:

The person referred to above was me. I asked what I began to think was a dumb question and changed my post. Sorry, Vincible.

Our forum is a great place to learn about strategies. The folks we have here are also very willing to share.

Miles, with your positive attitude to learn, I'm sure you will be challenging the higher levels soon. :)

BTW, I've just posted some tips on Maso over in the strategy forum. Go take a look if you guys are interested.

They're close in terms of overall AI strategy, I suppose. But the human has to play completely differently in order to compete. The AI bonuses are HUGE.

Don't worry about the edit Miles, I've pulled the vanishing question trick on other people too :)

Gengsta:

Although you said my song was okay, I have doubts about it's worthiness. I tried to imagine your plot development as it would unfold so my song would fit in. I think I needed to be more general, creative, and melodic, and so I pass on the challenge of song writing to anyone who wants to try to write a rally song to use instead of mine in WofW.
Don't worry my ego's not that fragile. :D
But use it if you like, Gengsta. :)
