Welcome to the Fellowship of the Ring Empire Thread - The Sequel. :)

The old FotR thread was getting too big and it was taking too long to load the thread, thus this new one.

Thanks Ray. It was an interesting experiment that I probably won't try again, although I did learn from it. ;)

Terl: Any win is a good win! There are no paltry submissions. If all our members submitted only one game a week (regardless of size or difficulty), the other empires couldn't touch us. So, the fact that you submitted three is awesome! Keep up the good work! :HOT:

You are right about more people submitting. I have noticed quite a few of our members don't post at all. My scores, numerically speaking are low compared to 60k, but, I don't like gigantic right now and true to the word, maso hurts. I tried one on normal and just thought it was too big. I would rather finish multiple smaller games that are roughly equal to time and scores of one larger one.

What type of galaxies work better at higher levels? I play with loose/scattered and common all the time.

*clap clap clap*

I'll begin submitting again soon... probably next week. And I'm sure AP will draw some more people out.

I usually play gigantic/tight/common, but for the last couple of weeks I've been playing gig/tight/rare to shorten the game a little. I've never played abundant on gigantic, but I imagine that would increase playing time by a considerable amount. I've also never played loose clusters .... what's that like?

I tried that once. I got bored with the game before I even finished colonization.

Tiny/rare is particularly easy. Other than that, I'm not sure that any map is much easier than the others. In general, smaller maps tend to lead to a more militaristic game, and larger ones tend to be more cultural, but what you choose to play is a matter of taste.

I find it easy, but then again that is all I've played. If you start out in a nice cluster with a few planets it is not bad at all. If you start out in a corner with the next good planets out of initial range it is a pain. I try to "play what I am dealt" and have actually one with one planet and one sector. It was on normal ai. I did everything I could to stay under everyone's radar, waited until all that was left was "close" with me and allied my way out.

The clusters are fun, like I said though, depending on what you get as a start. I think I will try some of the other settings and see how they go.

Miss Ruth Williamson's 3rd grade class in Middle Earth:

"Sauron! You are not making another volcano for the science fair. And no more silly jewelry either!

"Mr Sparkles! You may be a Balrog and bigger than Gandalf, but please put him down!"

"Strider! You are filthy young man! How do you expect anyone to believe who you really are? Well?"

"Saruman! Do you have to do everthing Sauron says? If Sauron wanted to dominate Middle Earth, I suppose you'd just go tra-la-la after him, wouldn't you?"

"Thorin, Gloin, Gimli! If you dig up the playground again I will have you expelled, and it's off to Khazad D'um military school for you."

"And just who brought this stinking fish and put it on my desk? Was it you Smeagol? My how you've changed, Smeagol... trouble at home?"

"And Gandalf. Please let Mr Sparkles pass. This is getting quite old...."

Attention Fellowship!

The Galactic Interstellar Metrological Monitoring Endeavor (GIMME) have observed freak snow downfall in the northwestern hemisphere of Earth. To combat frigid temperatures and declining morale, emergency shipments of booze have been requested. Please take a brief moment from your busy schedule to assemble all of your spare booze. Illegal alien pornography and delicacies would also be greatly appreciated. Freighters will be arriving shortly to convey your generous donations to G.R... Earth! Thank you! :)

OK, we will send copies of Torian Tushy and Drengin Derrieres along with some watered down Bacardi and a couple barrels of Torian Tornadoes. Heck, we'll even toss in some pipeweed too. :)

In addition to what vincible said (and I learned this from Ray and vincible), the tight clusters are best for maso because there are more unoccupied sectors. In maso the AI has big-time influence boosts and the tight clusters can give you the two sector or so breathing space you need to avoid early culture flips. On maso, if you get a colony adjacent to a major AI early, you will probably lose the system. If you get a colony a planet inside an AI sector early, you WILL lose it. Later on when you get all your culture boosts, you might be able to flip the AI but scattered stars early in a maso game can expose you to flips.

I used to play abundant everything, then switched to rare and have never gone back. It is more fun for me to manage 5 or 10 planets on gigantic than dozens. Also gigantic is something you get used to. At first, I didn't like it. I suggest playing huge for a while before you start playing gigantic. Then you need to use the scroll wheel liberally. Plus, those planet and manufacturing buttons on the far right of the tiny strategy map are really useful for boosting the size of the star systems on the tiny strategy map. Since the big colored circles are easier to see than the tiny dots, it makes life better.

Oh yes, on maps bigger than medium, I suggest taking a speed bonus. Get all the speed bonuses you can to make the map "relatively smaller". Using the way points is a good idea to lessen constructor management too. Good luck. :)

Greldon congrats. I counted twenty 60k games you submitted. Heck you deserve some special medal for that by itself. Keep up the good work everyone. I pledge to submit another 60k by Friday. :D

Hey, gang! Sorry I wasn't around today. We got hit by the snowstorm and ice here and I feel like I've been shoveling all day... ;p

Well, except for the few moments I took to knock down some GalCiv!!! :CONGRAT: Managed to get my full bird Admiral stripes, then just kept truckin'!

Great job, guys! We're giving SpecFor a run for their money! :D

Greldon: Congrats on getting that fourth game (even though it was 30 minutes late! LOL LOL )

The rest of the week is looking pretty bad for gaming for me. We've got our circus this weekend and that will pretty much tie me up during the nights. By the way, everyone should go to their local Shrine Circus when it comes to town! :D :D ;) ;)

Goodnight, all. Gotta email Cari about this one game that still won't submit. If she can't figure out what happened, it looks like it will just have to disappear. :(

I should be around tomorrow, depending on how bad work is.

As promised, here I am! :D

Hope everyone is doing well. I know half the US is battling the weather. Be careful out there...

I'm trying to get caught up in the threads today, between work and drinking coffee. It might take a while! :D

hello everyone,
I managed to submit a small AP game (thogh I'm nowhere near your submitting capabilities, 3-4 games! :SURPRISED: ) , and it seems to me that the scores are slightly higher than before (or maybe I'm just playing a little better than 6 months ago :) )
I think AP is really looking good, and once it's finally complete, it will be a great addition to galciv. :SURPRISED:
Today I'm back at work, thus not playing (:( (for now). The gigantic I started looks really, well... gigantic. It seems that I'll never be able to attack anyone: they're so far away! At first glance it does seem kind of easier than medium games, where all civs can start bulliing you from the beginning. At least in this gig, at the time their ships can reach me (speed but mostly range issues) I should be in a condition to defend myself :).
I've not advanced much in that gig I started, and I'm seriously considering abandonning it and restarting it under AP: with 7 civs, things get more interesting!

Edit: I stand corrected: 5 games in 2 days! That's beyond human ! ;)

So, have they fixed enough of the bugs in AP to make it playable? I might need to go ahead and download it sometime this week...
