Financial Woes

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us. In other words pretty much like every other time we’d lived through in the Metaverse.

The Special Forces gathered to discuss their current financial circumstances. The pub was open for lunch and the drinks had been served. Killa sat at a tall desk by the sun-lit window, sipping his Pinot. He looked in turn at black smoke, Cypher, Hurley, Jaws, Quack, Obi, and Wild. The boys sat in alphabetical order as usual.

Killa tapped his quill for silence, put his glasses on, and with affection beaming out of one eye, and calculation shining out of the other, looked at Hurley from under his clerk’s cap.

Hurley took the cue and coughed politely for attention. “The Financial Committee is now in session. I got that phrase from the Euros by the way. Very impressive bureaucracy: quick and efficient. Excellent cigars”.

“Ahem. So what do we have?”, asked Wild hopefully.

“Nothing, not a contract, not a mission, not a sheckle”.

“Well what about the other Diplomatic missions? Did we get any contracts?”

Jaws rubbed his fin. “We’ve only visited four empires…perhaps we’ll have more luck with the others?” The group nodded in uncertain agreement. “But guys, what did ya think? The empires are truly bizarre aren’t they? Peopled by people stranger than fiction”.

“Can you give us some examples?” asked Obi.

Jaws grunted. “What do I need to say? The Fellowship are in la-la land with a capering Minister of Foreign Affairs and a Steward who is waiting for the return of the king. I can’t begin to tell you the number of group hugs I had to endure. Jojoba oil in everything. And get this, they issued a statement saying how stable they intended to be!”

The gathering chuckled. “Kiss o’ death, that”, laughed Killa. “Still, you know what they say: Be on your guard against a silent dog and still water. I’ll explain that later. Um, the Aussies destroyed themselves shortly after I visited…hmmm. Probably no connection there. Their BBQs were great, and the Aussie wines put that French swill to shame. But mad as hatters”.

“The Evilists are…odd” offered Wild. “I’ve always thought that a fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom. Still, different strokes. Briefly saw bakka who just got married…”

“Poor happy bakka” mumbled black smoke. “As they say, the woman cries before the wedding and the man after”.

“black smoke, no one says that”. Wild coughed, rubbed his nose and pulled his ear. “They do say ‘Never rely on the glory of the morning or the smiles of your mother-in-law’ however. There is an unconfirmed rumour that the Evilists main planet was destroyed shortly after my visit. Anyway, they’re too busy arguing about who is the most evil that they don’t actually do anything-else. The temptress was there…”

“Ah Wombie, don’t fret” sighed Quack. “L'amour faite passer les temps. Les temps faite passer l'amour. And I should know”.

Wild brushed a tear from his eye. “Sheesh. She’s become like a little girl in a lolly shop”.

“Or a School Mistress” Jaws said, and then blushed.

“What sort of school did you go to?” asked Hurley, with a hint of wistfulness. “Now, the Europeans. They ended up giving us their sort of assistance. As a gift they’ve given us copies of their Alliance regulations, carefully colour-coded, and an example of each and every Form they use. The transports will be arriving any day now. We can use Telstra Dome and Cypher has volunteered to sort through them in his spare time”. The gathered applauded sincerely.

Killa slammed his desk with a paw. “Ouch. So we are gonna have to tighten our belts chaps. No more wine cruises and drunken binges. First secure an independent income, then practice virtue I say. Obi, the long-distance calls have got to stop. Jaws, more overtime would help the cause and stop saying ‘One drink is just right; two is too many; three are too few’. Cypher, if you could spare a minute from your renovations and organise the meat tray with Jaws. Hurley and I can do the chook raffle, and Wombie can continue to wombat the communication channels. We have to cut corners guys. Now that we can’t pirate… And you know what they say. ‘Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery’”.

“No one alive today says that Killa” remarked Wild with a sorry shake of his furry head. “You should get out more. Now any other agenda items?”

“How is our treaty with G.R.O.S.S. going, Wild?”

Wild grinned. “Glad you asked me. Where there is a sea there are pirates, eh. How does this draft communiqué sound? I’ve called myself Prime Minister only to impress them of course:

We, the Pirate Captain and G.R.O.S.S. Leader, and the Special Forces Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today and are agreed in recognizing that the question of G.R.O.S.S.-Special Forces relations is of the first importance for our two empires and for the Metaverse. We regard the agreement signed last night and the G.R.O.S.S.-Special Forces Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another. We are resolved that the method of consultation shall be the method adopted to deal with any other questions that may concern our two empires, and we are determined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of difference, and thus to contribute to assure the peace of the Metaverse. My good friends, for the second time in our history, a Special Forces Prime Minister has returned from G.R.O.S.S. bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time... Go home and get a nice quiet sleep”.

The gathering clapped excitedly.
“Yea its nice”.
“It’s unusual”.
“I’ve before it before somewhere” said Quack, thoughtfully.

Wild hastily folded the paper. “Anything else?”

Killa piped up, “Perhaps I should go and see Dad for a loan. After all, a father is a banker provided by nature”.

“Good suggestion”.

“And I’m being followed by some crazed Euro guy with uzis or something…Met him in a prison after that little disagreement with Dad over his make-over".

“Is he a threat?”

“I suspect he thinks he is, but I’ve got some wheels in motion to fix his little wagon. I’ve invited someone here who can stop him in his tracks. It won’t be pretty!”

“Is your plan foolproof?”

“I’m quietly confident. After all, an army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep”.

“Well we’ve certainly got enough sheep here, including one little lamb temptress out the back I note”.
“No we don’t” said Jaws.
“What do you mean?”
“Ate her”.
“Oh”.
“Sorry”.

“Alright. Meeting closed. The next round is on Killa”.

“Now hang on!”

Well, my muse may have been diverted by RL tonight, but yours is in rare form, Killa! Looking forward to my diplomatic visit to the Jedi...unless you "play it safe" and send me to visit Fat Bastard instead. :D

continued from the Epilogue in the FOTR thread

Later that evening

Ricbayer was uneasy, “this isn’t the way it is supposed to be” he thought. He lay down. “Everything we stand for, what’s right, and yet.. and yet” thoughts going through his mind as he tried to sleep..

He awoke to the sound of birds and sunlight streaming through his window. It was a lovely day. Ricbayer didn’t think so, he had to do something, he couldn’t let this go. Moving to his antechamber, he sat down, stared at the monitor, then began typing.

- -

Wild Wombat, Killa Koala, Hurley, Cypher, Quack, Obi Wan and Black Smoke were gathered in the conference room.

“shouldn’t we call this a war room” said Quack
“But we’re not at war my psychic friend, forgive me if I stare at you, but I’m still getting used to talking to a purple duck” stated Obi Wan…
“Lads… Lads..” as Killa raised his voice.

“Something has happened” he said
“Jaws” with an accusing look he stared at the great white pointer “has left his mark in the fellowship… apparently they have some….. well I’d rather not say and could use it against the force… How could you a goblin?”
“Tell you what Killa, I’ve never complained about a bit of goblin.. even if they don’t s..”
“OK Jaws we don’t want all the details” said Wombie
“You’re a fine one to talk after all that squishy stuff in the cubicle” was the reply
“The fact is” said Wild Wombat “They have something on us and we need to react.. If we fail to do so, other empires will see us weak”
“It’s Ok Wombie” said Jaws “I’m on my way”
“Jaws… use tact, they are the most powerful empire in the Metaverse”
“when has that ever bothered us” replied Jaws “and this is personal”

Hurley and Cypher looked up “Oh no” they said in unison “Don’t let him loose like this”
“Remember the time that girl down the Rag and Famish said he couldn’t dance… the place is now an official disaster area” Hurley chimed in
Killa, Obi Wan and Wombat looked into his eyes and shuddered

“Can I go with him?” asked Black Smoke “I know I’m new, but I think I might be abl;e to help on this mission”

“Rather you than me” Quack said quickly

As they left the war room the Bundy put a paw over Jaws shoulder… “Remember mate, that ricbayer doesn’t want England to Win the World Cup, he said they were a bunch of girls”
“What the f*** are you doing” said Quack as Jaws quickly left the room followed by Black Smoke.

It was a normal day in Gondor, the sun’s brilliance shone in an otherwise clear faultless azure sky. The citizens were going about there daily business oblivious to the happenings in the Tower of the Moon”

Vincible was sitting at his desk, crouched over his spell book trying to decide since his last level up whether he should take “Wall of Fire” or “Sudden interest in botany” as his new spell. He sensed a disturbance in front of him, but nobody was there, “must just be all the recent happenings” he thought. He looked up a cloud of darkness appeared to be hanging in the air, “that’s odd” he thought when from out of it appeared a shark dressed in a tuxedo with a very bad Sean Connery accent.

“Vinshible.. I undershtand you have something of mine.. I would like it back” came the request from the rather dashing looking shark (ok.. ok.. I have to talk myself up)
“I really don’t know what you are talking about, aren’t you from the special forces, weren’t you here a few days ago” said vincible innocently
“Eggshactly” replied Jaws as he took out a cigarette and was about to light it
“Sorry you can’t smoke in here, Theoden wouldn’t approve”

“My apologies, I wouldn’t want to upset my good friend Theoden, does he know about your acquisishion?”

Vincible moved his hands in the air and mumbled some words that Jaws didn’t understand. Nothing happened. Vincible stared, but… but you should have been…

The darkness dissipated somewhat and a figure emerged, in dark hooded cloak. “I am Black Smoke” he said “newest operative of the Special Forces.. you may be familiar with my friend and colleague here but the cloud I cast render your spells useless”
“I am here to save your life vincible.. Jaws will kill you if you don’t give back the sheet.. It’s quite simple really.. Oh the Evil empire talk about torture and then debate for three weeks the best form of torture and what sort of techniques should be use, but you are dealing with a great white pointer, the most efficient killing machine in the galaxy” Black smoke paused for breath
“What if I don’t give it back” said vincible
“You will be dead” replied Black smoke
“But you still won’t have the sheet” vincible quickly came back with.
“That’s true” said Black Smoke “Then we’ll ask the next fellow we meet and the next until somebody will know”

“Vinshible.. I undershtand why you did.. to protect your empire.. Before I kill you, I’d like to let you know that we are not the enemy, in fact as the former Posse have had good relations with you and are no direct threat to you.. This has become personal you see. Destroy the sheet and thish meeting never took place”

Vincible looked nervously around him..
“No way out” whispered Black Smoke “It’s time… Jaws I said I would make him see reason, I was wrong.. do it your way”

Jaws approached vincible, his eyes rolled back till only the whites were showing.. “Don’t think I can’t shenshe you when I do this with my eyesh… I jusht hate the sight of blood” said Jaws.

“Stopppppppp” yelled vincible “you can have the sheet.. I did it for the fellowship, to save us if needed. I never intended to use, only in an emergency” panted vincible

Vincible when to a storage chest and removed a sheet.
“Is this the one, the real one” asked Black Smoke
Jaws took it an inhaled “Yep.. can still smell her and em em em.. anyway it’s the right one”

Black smoke removed a device from beneath his cloak, touched it to the sheet and a strange black flame erupted and engulfed the sheet.
“It’s gone” he said

“Vinshible, no hard feelingsh old son… must dash”

With that a void within space appeared and they were gone. A shudder went down vincible’s spine.. “These Special Forces shouldn’t be underestimated” he thought.

“Ricbayer!”

Refresh again - as Cypher says, another day, another icon! An old army classic this time (where is Sgt. Hard?). I've got two more to try - another type of star and the Delta Force symbol, coming soon.

Sorry my muse seems to be taking a break, too - will climb back into it soon... :)

Our Travels in the Metaverse

Part 5: G.R.O.S.S. Daddy

“Hi Dad”.
“Son”.
“How are things?”
“Good. Good”.
“That’s good”.
“And you?”
“Yea. Good”.
“OK…”
“Mum?”
“Well, you know”.
“Yea. Same?”
“Same as. She doesn’t change”.
“And Gerakken?”
“He’s good. Oh... No, he’s good”.
“So everyone’s good”.
“Pretty much”.
“So have you…”
“No. Not since…”
“Arrr”.
“But I…”
“Um?”
“Gee, perhaps soon”.
“Yea, I know what you mean. Although…”
“You too?”
“I’d say”.
“Huh”.
“Well, it’s been good”.
“Perhaps?”
“Soon?”
“Yea?”
“Yea”.
“Well, bye then”.
“Bye”.
“OK bye”.
“Oh, I suddenly thought”.
“Uh?”
“Um. Maybe. Uh. Any chance of a…ar…”
“Loan?”
“Oh thanks, gee, that’s an offer I can’t refuse!”
“How much?”
“Oh. Hadn’t really thought about it. 100 million credits”.
“I’ll write a cheque”.
“Ta Dad. You’re a life-saver. Gives me an excuse to come around more often, eh?”
“Pfft”.
“Come on Dad. You did offer! And just your signature there. Great. Alright, bye”.
“Bye”.
“Ciao”.
“Bye”.

Killa stretched and sipped his Pinot. “Well that went well. I’m glad that I had a chance to practice with you before meeting Dad”.

Black smoke nodded his head.

“So, what did ya think? Will it work on Dad? Was I convincing? I liked the quaver I put in my voice at the end there. Almost seems too easy”.

Black smoke nodded. “Um. Mmmm”.

“Great”.

The tales of the agent - part 4, continued.

Or - how I finally reached Minis Tirith.

"Now remember to tell all your friends about Sauron inn! That's Sauron, not Saruman."

"There is a Saruman bed & breakfast too?"

"Yes. That foolish one has been a thorn at my side for far too long. But he showed him! I've started putting a mint on the pillow of any visitor. We're the number one choice for any respetable orc."

The agent assured him that the mint was indeed the highlight of his visit.

The trip to the city was smooth and effiecent. Air Nazgul was a capable airline company. A shaply ork by the name tag of "Michael" on his plate-mail walked up and down the aisle strapped to the nazul back and offered him free beverages and snacks.

After so time Michael brought the agent a sealed envlope with the seal of the EU.

"Drat, they seem to be able to send this stuff everywhere now-a-days", he muttered, and opened. As he suspected, it was a message from his emperor.

"Harel old chap, our intel decoded a very intersting message from that foolish person, Koala something. It seems he boasted you only carry uzi's, and he has wheels in motion to fix your wagon, whatever that means. Just thought you should know. ta ta.

P.S - he also says he found someone who could stop you."

The agent eyed the message warily. So, Koala has been drinking again, no other way to reason that foolish message. The agent doesn't even CARRY uzi's anymore. It's Tavor plasma pistols all the way. Besides, he still think the agent can be stopped.

The agent shook his head. There is no doubt that Koala foolishness and over-confidence are going to make the job a lot easier, but so far he still has to pedal all across the galaxy. About the nonsense on someone able to stop him...

The agent paused here. Surely... not? Has the Koala managed to get the goddess CariEf on his side? Is this even possible? But there, he clearly says someone who could stop the agent. That could only be a god. Or maybe is the man of the frog, the creator and benefactor of this universe? But surely he will not side with a criminal against the rightous agent and his quest to kick butt?

Thus worried and shaken, the Nazgul landed at the outskirts of the city. A few token arrows flew from the walls ans stuck the nazgul, who seem to shrug them. This seems more like a custom then a defence, and inded Michael seemed to wave to some remote guards, who waved back.

Only the agent dropped off at the city - the rest were flying to the shire to purchase some beer.

The capitol city of Moria-7b was a jolly place, with many a smile and white stone everywhere. A strange person in a cloak approached the agent and offered to sell him a newspaper. The agent poliely declined.

"Oh, but surely my lord will want to be updated with all the news of the metaverse?"

The agent assured him he has no need for a newspaper that tells him about fictional events, and he is quite pleased with local news services for his real news.

"But it is written in humor and style!"

The agent assured him he does not care.

"But look, I'm writting it like it's REAL, with all little nice tidbits and made-up stories about empire rising and defaction!"

The agent ignored him, and kept on walking.

"PLEASE, SIR! It is my livlihood! Will you deparve an editor of his job?"

"What is your name?" Inquired the agent, annoyed.

"theodan of Rohan, my liege, and my paper is the metaverse review. We're a part of the joeuser network".

"Never heard of it. Now bugger of".

Thus, sulking, the editor disappeared into the throng that populated the city first level. Climbing ever upwards, the agent passed one wall after the other in his quest for the steward palace, where he could find one Tom Bombadil, supposdly the man who is supposed to help him. From the look of the city, the agent begun to doubt ANYONE here is capable of helping him.

His opinion was enforced when he actually MET Tom Bombadil. The local plebians were quite distraught when the agent used his tavor pistol to blast Tom to little bits, but then again he did not seem to shut up and quit his infernal singing. A few of the more intelligent members of the city also appaulded. It seems they too were wary of the signing.

The question, then, remains who will help him to find Jaws. He might have stopped and asked Tom again but... nah, this is more satisfying this way.

And the agent continued his search of the city, and found Gandalf, and they told many a tall tales about Led Zepplin. And then Gandalf begun to sing the Led Zeppling song, and the agent was distraught, and was forced to blast Gandalf to tiny bits as well. But he was not happy with it, because Gandalf was nice and had a cool beard. But he DID sing.

And the agent found another strange character called Smeagle, which he recoginized.

"Yo! bluesteel! What you doing here?"

"Arrr... my name is Smeagle, yes it does, our precious. We are not be bluesteel."

"Oh, come now, Bluesteel, cease this foolishness. I need another reciepe for Koala when I catch him".

"He angers us, yes he does! We are not bluesteel! We are smeagle".

"Isn't it supposed to be Smeagol?"

"Arrr...."

"Damn Australians and their spelling. Don't you even know how to change your name properly?"

"Look mate, it's difficult as it is, ok?! You took my empire from me, you're boiling everyone in beer... just... just... leave me alone".

And the agent left.

And the agent was forced to roam the city, until in his anger he found the poor goblin girl, and whisk her away to Geneva where she could abort Jaws bastard child, and he raised a huge cry of anger when he found out yet another one of Koala's minions has escaped.

And he voted to continue his search. But he shall not blast away Moria-7b, as he took fancy of Sauron bed and breakfast, and promised to return at least once every year.

The Fall of Harel: a very naughty lad

“But he is after you Killa, you must flee!”

Killa looked around wildly. He fled from the Special Forces pub. He passed Ms Quinn’s new consulting rooms as fast as he could run. He was so scared; he didn’t care about elegance or pride. He wanted to live! He wanted to sniff the flowers and play games; chat to his mate and his mates; drink Pinot; and eat and sleep and look for dags. He had been told what Harel was like, with his Tavor plasma pistols and his bad-arse attitude. Harel was cold, calculating, efficient, sophisticated, vincible. He was a European. Killa didn’t want to see the final frontier just yet!

Killa ran as fast as the wind, along the street, and paused to look behind. And there came Harel, with foul purpose in his eye, and a swagger in his jaunty step.

“Where are ya stupid little animal mates now, Gunga Din?”, Harel shouted. “Did they flee? Nothing has ever stopped me…nothing!”

Killa sobbed and ran, and ran. His little paws kicking dirt as he tried to stride. He was desperate. He knew that nothing could save him this time. He had gone too far in his escapades around the Metaverse. They had all seemed so innocent at the time.

“Why run” shouted Harel again. “I have a delicious recipe for you this time. Into the freezer first, and then the boiling water…I can’t wait!”

Killa’s hair stood on end. It was as he feared…a cannibal. In desperation he saw the convent and ran towards it. His little paws were bloody and sore now. But he knew that soon he would not feel a thing. Ever.

He thought: Why wasn’t I nicer to Quack? Why did I allow Wombie to have so many nippers? Should I have spent more quality time with Dad? And why didn’t I buy more rounds with the boys? Should I have just let bakka steal all of those beers? He resolved that if he lived he would be a nice koala. But he knew, deep inside, the game was up. This was it. This was the end. He felt it in his waters.

A tower was before him. A bell-tower. Killa ran to it and pushed on the door. It was stuck. He hammered and hammered and risked a quick peek behind. Harel strode towards him, twirling his Tavors insouciantly, even jauntily. Some harsh emotion crossed Harel’s otherwise calm face. Was it a killer instinct? Was it regret? Was it schadenfreude? Probably the latter Killa supposed. It fit. Oh yes, Harel was no sentimentalist.

The door finally budged and Killa threw himself inside. A plasma bolt licked the ground where he had been standing. But Killa knew that Harel had meant to miss. Had Harel meant to kill Killa with a plasma bolt, Killa would now be gasping his last sad breath: a forlorn and pathetic koala brought to justice by a psychotic European. Wasn’t that how so many fugitives from justice ended their sorry abusive lives?

Killa limped up the stairs. The tower was circular and the mossy tower stones wept moisture. The wooden stairs creaked and groaned. A wave of vertigo swept over Killa. But he forced one paw after another, to traverse the steps. One after another. Climbing. Climbing, perhaps to freedom, but probably to certain death. This was it. The end drew nigh.

With a final exhausted gasp Killa flung the trapdoor open and entered the belfry. A sharp wind flicked his hair and chilled him to the bone. He looked out and down, and swooned. A hundred feet or more (say, 33.133 metres).

Killa turned. And there stood Harel. Malicious, cruel, unforgiving and yet tender. The many shades of Harel. Shafts of moonlight cut the black shadows. Heavy beams supported the great bell hanging at the centre. There were additional temporary support beams. Killa backed up against the stonework as Harel looked about.

Killa stared at Harel, wide-eyed with apprehension.

Harel laughed. “Are you afraid?”

An almost imperceptible nod from Killa.

Harel almost laughed. “Poor koala. What a shame! You shouldn’t have annoyed the Metaverse, koala. And especially the Europeans. We don’t take kindly to annoyance. Oh no. Not kindly at all. That was your mistake, koala. We’re not sentimental. I’m not sentimental”.

A moment, as he stared at Killa, then he advanced on him slowly.

“What are you going to do?”

“Kill you and eat you”.

(Killa: desperately) “But I was happy and safe here! There was nothing you could prove! But I thought you secretly liked me, perhaps a little. Harel, please! You respect me now! Respect me! Keep me safe!”

(Killa: softly, pleading) “Like me... keep me safe...”

(Harel: whispering) “Too late... too late... there's no going back. This is it little koala”.

Suddenly Killa's eyes, looking past him, go wide with horror.

(From Killa’s point of view) The figure of a woman draped in black stands motionless in the shadows by the door. Killa, not quite in Harel’s gun sight, stood transfixed.

Harel saw the koala’s fear and turned, slowly. The black figure moved forward, seemed to merge with the shadow and become part of them. Harel forgets about Killa and backs away, terrified.
(Whispering) “No... no...”

Harel backs perilously close to the edge of the drop below. Killa grins, finally. Harel sobs and falls to his knees, in anguish and remorse. The black figure advances into a shaft of moonlight. It is…

“Shalom son, what are you doing here? Have you forgotten your mother? Don’t I exist for you? I had you and raised and brought you up to be a good boy, and this is how you repay me? You’re killing me, like a knife in the heart? I should spend my time at home waiting for a visit, a phone call? Are you too important now, swaggering about with your pistols and your bad-arse attitude? Well, don’t kneel there, say something, you’ve got nothing to say to your suffering mother, what do I tell your father, I’m still waiting for an answer, cat got your tongue, and that poor little koala, what are you thinking, here little koala have some chocolate”.

“Mother what are you talking about? I…”

“What are you talking about! Is that all you’ve got to say? It’s Friday, what are you doing in a convent? Is this the way I raised you? I’ve cooked your favourite, Gefilte fish and Lochshen kugel and Knaidlach and some delicious Mandelbrot. Now I’ll hear no more about it, we’re going to eat and then you’re coming home”.

With two fingers she grabbed Harel’s ear and dragged him, compliant, towards the stairs. She turned and winked at Killa. “Thank you little koala. I enjoyed the visit, you must visit us some time, you’ll always be welcome, and don’t mind this one, he’s not as tough as he thinks. Enjoy the chocolate!”

And with a final tug, she and Harel disappeared down the stairs.

Killa grinned and ate his chocolate. There is more than one way to skin a cat he thought, with some satisfaction.
