Virtual Communities in WinCustomize Talk WinCustomize Forums

So what are some other virtual communities you hang out on? For me I spent a lot of time on the Stardock discussion forums debating politics and technology. I also hang out on Usenet in various news groups there discussing games, operating systems, politics, history, etc. How about you guys? What are some virtual communities or discussion areas you enjoy being at?

It is our belief that roughly 5% of the userbase uses a disproportional amount of the bandwidth. Out of this 5%, 3/4ths of them have not purchased anything. A person who has downloaded 50 megs of stuff from WinCustomize needs to contribute in some way. It's as simple as that. I'm trying to find the post that even implies that people would have to pay just to start using the site. Every post *I* have written has talked about the need to limit those who are downloading a LOT of stuff, not the casual user. The problem with bandwidth isn't the guy who visits and donwloads a half dozen skins on occasion. The problem is the guy with the cable modem with the downloading queing that is downloading 25+ megs in a session. But I have to agree with Tarkus, I

Being a visitor to each of the major skin sites, it's really interesting how over the past several months each one has attracted its own type of user. And how those users have really made an impact of the website in question. For example, on DeviantArt, the user base tends to be 15 to 25 year olds and the conversations there revolve around that more than what you see here (discussions on youthful love and high school and that sort of thing). Adni, yea the main problem is that banner ads don't pay. Literally. DeviantArt has the same problem as we do on WindowBlinds.net. Best case would be to make $700 per month off them -- and that's if they actually paid their bills which they usually don't. For now, we'll just have the "flip a switch" mechanism in place. Over time we can look at limiting things until we get to the bandwidth we need. Heck, we may be able to let people download 50 megabytes without a problem.

Just as an update, we're not going to implement all of this today so in a little while some of the libraries will be basically be down for nearly everyone who has downloaded more than a certain number of megabytes (which we'll be playing with to try to get as many people to be able to use the libraries as possible). The good news is that WinCustomize's popularity continues to increase. The bad news is that we have once again reached our bandwidth limits. Stardock, who provides the bandwidth for WinCustomize has been, since late June, sharing its own bandwidth for its services with WinCustomize. In June, WinCustomize exceeded by far the amount of bandwidth it had available to it and the site became unbearably slow. Hmm, i'm not sure JayG. I don't follow the Litestep stuff as much as I used to. There are a couple of questions you would have to find the answers to: 1) Where do most people download their Litestep themes from? 2) How often are the sites that carry Litestep themes getting new submissions?
