What I should've said to my students at some point on Thursday: Don't focus on how you may have it worse than others, nor how you may have it better. Looking at others' fortune in comparison to your own situation can almost always be balanced (or unbalanced) by those who are less fortunate than you. Instead, deal with the reality of your own current situati

One distinct possibility is by Forces belonging to Iraq. It's probable, not just possible that without the U.S. watching over their shoulders, the Iraqi government will quickly turn into a power struggle ending in a totalitarian regime. However in my personal favorite guess, Iran will exploit the power vaccuum. <

thats where i first learned about the 5th of november That's odd. I knew about the 5th of November just about around the time I learned about the months of the year. I think I was five.

There is a holiday for Guy Fawkes didnt he try to blow up parliment? That's the guy. Er, the Guy. It's more of an Anti-Guy Fawkes Day, really.

'Remember, remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot.' Having looked up some info on Mr. Fawkes, I find that the full rhyme gets quite a bit anti-Catholic at the end but I suppose that's understandable given the political backdrop of the original Gunpowder Plot.

In the THQ game, Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights , there seems to be an easter egg that I hadn't encountered before... because there's basically a 1 in 365 chance of seeing it. On November 5th, Guy Fawkes Day, fireworks can be seen and heard in the night sky as Scooby-Doo searches for Scooby Snacks and tries to solve mysteries. It's constant , so

The bruise is about three inches in diameter. All that blood was deep under, so it sort of bulged up like when you burst a vein with a botched IV. Once it spread out, it isn't as bulging.

All I did was pop in Re-Animator and fall asleep to the final credits (around 8pm). I didn't even dream of anything like it since I was so tired. Instead, I dreamed about Arabic class. AAAAAAAH!

Woah. I'm beat. Grenade assault course. MOUT training. Pretty good stuff, but there were some... issues. I'm not going to get into it, nor into the interpersonal drama amongst the students, but instead give you a 'me' update. I did not break my arm. It's just a really really deep bruise that makes it look like my forearm is

I've been getting too much sun this week. I feel a bit beat down, but I'm convinced that I'm looking more tone up top from carrying around the 40lb ruck (much less rucking for me the past few days; we decided to let the student leadership actually lead, which requires us to back off a bit). I'm not starving myself, but I am intaking less calories than I'm usi

Air Force chow, but the lines are still frickin' terrible. At least the Army gives you the mediocre food quickly. Also, that breakfast is upwards of 300 calories. Mid-morning protein bar, lunch (Reuben sandwich) and dinner (what the heck did I have for dinner last night?). Yesterday was light, especially in light of the physical activity that I've been doing, but I'm right up around 1800-2000 calories I'd bet.

4 mile run around a local campsite. Breakfast was an egg and an egg substitute, tall glass of milk with a scoop of protein powder. We met up with the troops at the classroom and ran down some First Aid techniques. Buddy carries were demonstrated and executed and, by the time I got back from a thing, they were running walk-throughs of react to direct fire (n

First off, you are very sweet to do this (you and all the others, too). Secondly, good job on the gym. (I don't want to toot my own horn, but I've been getting some extra workout the past couple of days, too.) Point three: 13 of them. SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are so o

0500 PT, the gym. (Breakfast is two turkey sandwiches on wheat.) The students don't have a first formation until more than two hours later. We meet them later than that, review yesterday's information, and then tell them to move to a training site. SSG J asks me if he can bum a ride out there, and I inform him I planned on walking with the students. Not to be out

The difference being that I'm not being evaluated at all, and I am indeed an instructor. Eight years in, no tactical assignments, and I have to teach IET soldiers in AIT how to be better tactical combatants. No pressure, right?

Hook 'em horns! Dude, did you see the UT/Texas Tech game this weekend? Wait. What was this article about? edit: Incidentally, it has been decided that this hand signal will also be used for "squad wedge" in our upcoming field exercise. Not my idea.

The academic (technical competence) portion of the course is over, and I get to try my hand instructing something I've done far too little of: field craft (tactical competence). I was nearly giddy this afternoon as I put on my flak vest and load bearing equipment, and strapped my kevlar helmet onto my head. I'm reading ahead, as my practical knowledge (suc
