With a wry bit of amusement I've seen Shogot's latest self destruction and the reactions from it about his imagined problems with the skin contest --aka gui olympics --. There is a silver lining. All successful communities have these problems. They are a natural result of human politics. It doesn't matter if your community is the PTA or church group or in the cyberworld. There are those who are leaders and create things for others. And there are those who are envious, petty and jealous

Reminds me of animal farm and the rules the pigs made. I've read the customize message board. Strange...no moderating of Shogots posts against Frogboy which exist just to offend. Some pigs are more equal than others...

I've been playing with skinning for a couple of months. This sounds like a lot of fun. I'll probably just represent 1 site since I won't have time to do more skins.

What shreds of credibility Shoggot may have had he has sure pissed away here. Stay with me here shoggot, company A tries to get people to buy their product based on what it does. company B tries to get you to buy their product as a way to show support for 'the skinning community'. That's because Style XP makers know that their patch doesn't do enough to justify a $20 price tag. So they try to deceive people into thinking that the $20 is supporting 'the skinning community'. If they paid

Wow I made a hot topic! I did not say that there was no msstyles community. I just don't see how giving my money to a couple of guys who whipped up a hack as supporting it. If anyone should be collecting money it shoudl be websites you mention. That Stardock is paying for Wincustomize that in turn supports non Stardock programs just highights the difference between TGTSoft and Stardock. Fu

What "Community" do you speak of then, Mephisto Corugant? If I give TGTSoft my $19.95 for Style XP what community is that supporting? If I start up the Chris Hamp charity where the money goes to just me, is that still a charity? These guys are parasites in the truest sense. They don't have a skin site or pay for one. They don't even have a support forum for me to make my bitch post. And they make a program that profits off of Microsoft's engine. Style XP can be reproduced wit

OK I confess I tried out Style XP awhile back. But today I got a shocker! An expiration dialog that they never mentioned poppped up. But if that wasn't shocking enough, the arrogance in their dialog: "Please support the skinning community by registering Style XP!" So paying TGTSoft, a company with no skin library of its own, no forums on its site, which just makes a patch is supporting the community? What arrogance!

shoggot says: "fair enough - I'll take that as a "we like control", IE, no. nice community support, eloquent response to this supporting app devs" Pot to kettle. Pot to kettle. For a guy who just got done calling people "evil".....

Turns out that StyleXP ain't free afterall. It's now $20 and the version that they released last month secretly had an expiration date that times out telling you to buy. In other words, they knew they were going to start charging a month ago but didn't tell anyone so that they'd make as many skins as possible. Now they've pulled the rug out from under them. http://www.neowin.net/bboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8178

Sad news, boomgames's ISP has pulled the plug. Some of you may remember boomgames as the site that gave Alexandrie and Jafo so much grief about getting PreLuna down. http://www.neowin.net/bboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7912 The site was great for game news but hosting skins seemed to have killed them.

So what exactly is a rip? I'm getting into how to create my own skins and what is the threshold? Can you use someone elses graphics, modify them and then include in the readme credit for the original? Or is that taboo? Where do you draw the line?

I skimmed the site yesterday night. It's like an alien world. Not surprising why it's just a bastion of weak wallpapers and screenshots. Who wants to spend hours making a skin for a site that treats people with so little respect? There's enough teeny bopper sites on the net.
