Thanks for the suggestion. It worked. Stardock Central came through with a download and an install that worked. The game is now up and running plus its been patched to the latest version!

Finally located the game and bought it from a video game specialty store. Put the CD in, get the autorun menu. Can view the Readme, access sd demos, or exit without any problems, but when I click on the "install" it just hangs. Browsing the CD and directly clicking on Setup.exe also hangs. I've removed all programs including McAfee virus checker. My system is: ASUS P2BD w/ Intel Celeron 1.0GHz 703MB Ram 10GB+ free disk space on the first HD and much more on the other<b
Strek, you are absolutely right about the effect of lightning on nitrogen and its ability to produce complex nitrates. Lightning has the effect of producing nitrogen "fertilizer" and even more complex molecules. Farmers observed long ago that their crops grew better after a lightning storm. The way we "see" planets is via their effect on the stellar bodies they orbit. The planets make their suns "wobble". The vast majority of stars we observe do not wobble, but some do. Assuming thi
A couple of comments.... 1)Volcanic action releases simple compunds, mostly oxides (i.e. water, nitrous oxide, sulfuric acid). Friction of water vapour in this type of atmosphere produces lightning which breaks down these oxides to produce oxygen, nitrogen, etc) Hence any planet that has had any sort of volcanic past (which is highly likely)has a chance of producing the basics for an oxygen-nitrogen-carbon atmosphere. The addition of bio-life on our planet then set the ratios of e
Our imaginations can certainly come up with a set of plausible constructs for “any” system. There is no section of the universe that can’t support some form of sentient life in our imaginations. Plenty of pulp sci-fi out there to support that contention. After all, this isn’t science its science-fiction. Hence, I don’t think that’s the criteria for selecting an alien race. I believe, the key is how well a selected race fits into the games ethos, its objectives, and player de
The success of an alien race in a game such as GalCiv might depend on how well a player can identify or at least except the plausible reality that such a race would require. For example, silicoid life that looked like a heap of crystals, versus a molten bloob with vent holes versue a tall statue with arms and legs that looked like a glass human. Each of these forms gives rise to a different feeling/first impression and I would think also to different plausible explanation of th
The reason I'm on this forum is to figure out if I should buy GalCiv. Up to now I have played MOO2 and MOO3 and have immensely enjoyed both. The unpatched version of MOO3 was so frustrating I almost smashed the CD (but I'm better now, really ;) ) The official Atari/QSI forum is spectacular (as I also contribute content, perhaps I'm a bit biased) Judging by the passion with which folks talk about GalCiv, it seems this game also inspires devotion. So far the focus seeems
Bugs standing on the last pair of legs might look humanid, but I'd call them Arachanoid Lizards rearing up on their hind quarters might be Sauren. Furry, creatures with muzzles, long teeth and claws might be best described as canine, feline. Cows, buffalo etc are bovine Fish, Squids, Octopus might be better known as marine follwed by a sub classification etc... Slime doing quite well on top of pond water or in leaf detritis...well that's a whole 'nother story. Regard
