I have my own beefs with "Enterprise", and never really cared much for "Voyager". DS9 wasn't too bad, overall. But TNG and TOS....man; I can remember those days as a kid in the 70s, curled up on the floor in my bean bag chair, with a bowl of cheese puffs, watching the originals, over and over again! As an old Trekker myself, please allow me to chime in: Starfleet is, as far as its mission goes, strictly a scientific/exploratory body, but with military/defensive capabilities.
