thatoneguyinslc - The pic is from the 1st debate - see the podium he's standing behind? It's a weak effort to counter the "notecard" jibe. I like your idea about the uplink to Cheney, though - that at least is funny. Maybe that's why all the long pauses! OK, now it's coming into focus. Cheers, Daiwa

Sorry, WiseFawn - The steam has been let out of the media steamroller. You could just feel the mainstream leftist press coming out of their depression after the first debate and they've been furiously trying to make that 90 minutes mean more than Kerry's 20 year record, not to mention his current campaign, ever since. They still believe perception is everything, so last night's debate was not good for them. I think they will ultimately be d
"everything is a trap. Everyone really hates me and wants me to fail." CrispE - You can characterize it this way if you wish, but the track record supports my view. Loaded questions get tossed much more frequently to the incumbent. I don't have a problem having a President who genuinely belie
Don Bemont - Well said. Had to give you points. Our media suck. We have to work really hard to glean the substance from the cheerleading. Cheers, Daiwa
OK, tit for tat. Whoop de do. Good entertainment. Cheers, Daiwa
As rare as it is, I have to agree with CrispE on the mistakes question. That was a golden opportunity for Bush to show some humanity, and instead he opted not to give Kerry any ammunition. I think the points he would have scored with viewers would have outweighed how the answer would have been used against him. <
Yes, there is not a huge net loss of jobs, BUT, there is a huge net loss of income because $20 jobs were replaced by $7 to $10 jobs. Toss in that manufacturing jobs that have the good benefits (as well as pay) have declined the most since the great depression (1929-1940). Toss in that health care that cost an average of $2300 now
I actually think Kerry is more virtuous than his supporters. Gotta bust your chops on that one, Drag. He's just as sleazy as the whole campaign crowd, a truly empty suit. And I think he has no problem at all with Michael Moore, MoveOn.org, or Whoopi Goldberg. I have more respect for rank and file Dem
Interesting. Not much rebuttal here from the lefties. I'd also recommend the Slate review of Dr. Obeidi's book (not to mention the book itself) about the Iraqi Chief Nuclear Scientist's life under Saddam and the wider implications of the previously unknown dominoes which have fallen since Saddam was toppled. Effectively puts the lie to the "Wrong war, wrong place, wrong time" BS. See post "Another brick in the WMD wall." Cheers,<BR
The supposed overestimate was, in reality, part of a wider underestimate. Libya and Iran turned out to be even more dangerous than we had thought, and the A.Q. Khan network of "Nukes 'R' Us" even more widespread. But now Iraq can be certified as disarmed, instead of wishfully assumed to be so, Libya's fissile materials are all un
Turns out the wood company isn't imaginary, but I doubt Bush has any idea his portfolio includes one (his stuff is in a blind trust by law), so his reply was genuine in my opinion and a great comeback. I dislike the spinner interviews, too, but they're kind of like the car wreck at the side of the road - you just have to slow down and look. Occasionally, something gets explained a bit better, a point more clearly made (on both sides), and in a twiste
Dan Rather give you that memo? I hope there is a readible version of this somewhere, if it's legit. Have my doubts, though. Seems a little too convenient on the one hand, but would I be shocked if it turned out to be true? Nope. Cheers, Daiwa
Interesting the way you lament your lot, Cacto. What exactly do you expect? Should government (& your vote) be about what special favors are being handed out to you (or not, in this case)? I ask this sincerely, with no disrespect - I'm just curious about how you view the relationship of government to citizen. Cheers, Daiwa
Substance: Bush win. Style: A draw. Kerry stumbled & bumbled as much as Bush this time around, which wasn't much really. Best line of the night goes to Kerry, though: "I want to talk about my plan some more, I hope we can." Cheers, Daiwa
Kerry: "I would have used force wisely." Care to be a tad more specific? How dumb does he think we are? That was completely insulting. Kerry: "Religion has been a huge part of my life, leads me today." Nice try. Cheers, Daiwa
I think you doing some wishful thinking here, Sandy. Calling Kerry Kennedy isn't too far off, actually. Kennedy's been a bigger asshole than Kerry throughout the campaign. Not a bad idea to remind people Kerry's even left of Tubby Ted. Cheers, Daiwa
McAwful is just furiously backfilling on Fox just now, actually trying to convince us this was a Home Run for Kerry. Making petty little critiques, like "he said internets when it's internet" - Oh, pulleez. Also went ballistic over Bush interrupting Gibson once to respond to a really cheap shot by Kerry (interestingly, can't remember what it was about!) - "Bush lost it, he was out of control! Not very Presidential." What a crock. At worst,
You can accuse me of being late stepping to the plate, but I thought Bush was terrible in the first debate. Full disclosure requires that you know I was traveling from the East Coast to Arizona during the debate and didn't see it, so my opinion is based on the clips shown later and transcripts. I strongly support President Bush because of his policies and because of his fidelity to a set of principles. Kerry can't show up in the last month of the ca
Seeing would have made a difference, Drag. He looked energetic, sincere and confident. No signs of timidity or befuddlement like the first debate. What was up with the first debate I don't know, but he was like his "normal" self on the stump. He looked and sounded likeable and genuine. Kerry looked and sounded wooden and professorial. Cheers, Daiwa
Only tic that was noticeable to me was Bush's head-bobbin'. But that's OK, that's jes Tayhas. Kerry seemed every bit the arrogant prick he is, if you ask me. Sorry, but that's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. Cheers, Daiwa
That hurt my ears as well. That one word speaks volumes about Kerry. Cheers, Daiwa
I think the worst you could call this is a draw. I felt they both did a good job of presenting their positions and they've left us with the opportunity to make a decision based on their positions rather than their style. I count that as a victory for both, and for us for that matter. Cheers, Daiwa
If I hear "I have a plan..." one more time I'm gonna puke. Cheers, Daiwa
I'm a little surprised you are feeling that way, Drag. Kerry is much more tenuous & unsure of himself and Bush is very confident and doing well on his core issues. I think this will help Bush a lot and take some of the steam out of the MSM's heavy breathing about Kerry's "momentum." Cheers, Daiwa
Solitair - You are correct. The fear of what would follow the vacuum in Iraq should Saddam be taken out was a concern cited by Bush 1.0 at the time. Cheers, Daiwa
