The problem with using some sort of resistance is twofold: First, if a cap is the storage medium, adding resistance will increase the time to charge the cap. Second, adding resistance will make the lightning current more likely to take a different path (even if it hits the structure that has the cap, the lightning might just go around the cap, instead of into it). The current flow and high voltage spike from lightning would fry a capacitor. You'd need one with a very low effective series resistance, a very high dielectric value, and a very high capacitance. Yup, when you turn off the default XP behaviour, you get the older icon text behaviour (i.e., ugly). If you have it, WindowFX will let you set the icon text background to transparent.

XP, right? The default appearance setting for XP icon text is that shadowed effect. I can't remember the exact option name to unset that, but it will be in the 'control panel -> system' dialog, in the advanced tab, appearance and visual settings button. Somewhere in there is an option to set the icon text setting. I'm on a 2000 box at work, so I can't look to be sure. There's a place in New Mexico or Arizona (IIRC) that is doing research into lightning. They launch small rockets trailing a wire to ground as a path for the lightning to strike and then make measurements, etc. The problem with harnessing lightning would be the storage of the energy without destroying what it is that you want to store the energy in. I like the philosophical stuff also. Especially as it provides an impetus for more concrete improvements in our knowledge. Your original question is kind of interesting in that respect, as it's asserted that Einstein largely came up with his initial ideas about relativity by imagining what the world would look like if he were riding a beam of light.

Photon emission doesn't care what velocity the emitting object is travelling at. Even if the object is travelling at the speed of light, photons will still be emitted, exactly as if the emitter were standing still (detailed specifics of photon and particle behaviour is described in QED, quantum electrodynamics).
