This is only my opinion... Normal difficulty setting is "Fair". Everything above that is not. With that being said there are still ways to beat the game on Maso (All AI at Intelegent).

No supply ships I can remember. There are constructors used to build star bases which do extend range.

It will still take a long time but you might want to stack your transports w/ you attack ships. They are less vulnerable that way.
