I've been getting up at 5am to get some play time in before work and away from the kids and girlfriend. This game is causing me some considerable fatigue and pain :) That said, I haven't finished a full game yet - I keep starting over, ashamed at how badly I'm messing stuff up. I've got some empty house time tonight though and I'm going to go get lost in space.
The ships do tend to just sit ther and trade shots, if you leave them alone. Personally I think it makes a lot more sense to grab those fleets and move them. Drag the attackers into the firing arcs of your orbiting Gaus cannons, lead them to a different phase lane where you have a new fleet heading in, and so on. It's entirely possible to get really involved in a fleet battle and move things around to bring in flanking, fake retreats and so on.
They are kinda mouse like aren't they.
With a name like xboxxer, I'm surprised he stuck it out for 6 hours ;) Seriously though, as so many others have pointed out, this is a real time 4x game, not a tank rush arcade experience. For those that enjoy the 4x genre, taking hours, even days to build the perfect empire is key - it's like tackling a 100,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. It's supposed to take a long time.
