I am under the impression that desktop X is different because you are simply uploading a custom 'arrangment' of components, not necessarily new components. I'm not sure I like, it, but I can see the logic. I am not aware of anything else, though, that would allow you to use other people's graphics without permission, with credit or without.

jafo: while I would agree that that is how things have been in the past, I think it is becoming innaccurate. The last time I went trolling for my skins (after I had removed them from sites I had control of), I found many, many on non-english sites that I had never heard of, and I found them only because they retained the english filename. I worry about sophisticated rippers in the grey areas of international law. The law is very, very iffy in some countries in terms of free-use, copyrights, and reverse engineering. It would be damned difficult at this point to prevent a company based, say, in China from selling skins or artwork derived from skins, and they could sell to users in teh US or anywhere via the internet. hrmmm.... I'm not familiar with swift 3d. Is .swf format the normal flash format? I'm lost, sorry. when you said .swf i assumed you were talking about a macromedia flash file? If so, it won't let you save in any other format? I dunno if there is anything out there that will let you work on a .swf. There might be something out there to "decompile" them, but I'm not familiar with it. If you can save as a .fla, I'm sure you can get what you need to do done.

I don't use WB, but in the past when I have messed around with it I noticed there was an exclusion feature for apps that had problems. You could always make a note of the particular features on the skins that cause you trouble until you find the culprit. Some skins have extra buttons and whatnot that might not jive with the UI of the app you are talking about.

no, not that I am aware of. Flash might let you save the original .fla as an image sequence, and if not I know it lets you save as an avi, which you can save as an image sequence with lots of different software, then you could make an animation however you like. All this is dependant on you having the original .fla, though. I dunno if there is a decompiler-type thing for .swf files. I'm sure you wouldn't wanna rip anyone else's animation anyway.

You can find most everythign starting at shellfront: http://www.shellfront.org/ LS in is kind of a state of flux, and because they are converting to a theme standard, a lot of older themes won't work without tweaking. Best thing to do is roll a simple one yourself, getting a feel for the theme standard, and then you'll be set to make any theme you choose cozy on your system. If you have any futhur trouble, just ask away.

If it is something techincal, or for a task which I have seen no app for, I go to google first, since download sites have so much irritating click-through. I usually find what I need without having to resort to the-hell-that-is internet portal sites (read: shopping malls). I try to avoid CNET\msn\Yahoo-type places as much as possible...

This has a 3.0 splash that I haven't seen, so i think this is somewhat official. It's running very smoothly for me at present. again, I think you are over-thinking "stop supporting". It just means that they can't afford to have a separate, and more challenging, development effort to create *new*, updated versions that work on 98 and ME, when the support isn't there to begin with. The old stuff would always work. The problem is that some of the new, and most appreciated, bells and whistles simply don't work on 98/ME. So, do you continue backwards compatability, when many of the features you are working on
