anybody got an aspirin you just gave me a headache For now, I suggest sitting farther back from the monitor. Should I add an epilepsy warning?

These are the (approximate) average damage rolls dealt by an attacker against a defender of the listed stats. They're listed in order of increasing stats, with selected distributions for any given stat sum. For example, "Total Defenses 5" has (5, 0, 0) and (4, 1, 0) and various other combinations, but not all of them. I tried to remove redundancies. Note that I'm making assumptions, like that attack and defense both roll from 0-(listed nu
This thread is intended to gather precise numbers and equations related to game mechanics. Feel free to post if you have any.
Hmmm, I might have to actually run a sim. My current simming dice are open-ended, but that can be remedied
A mammal is just something that has mammaries, and I don't see any. I think they look more like Teddy Ruxpin, or Gremlins (from "Gremlins"). Or even an Ewok/Yoda hybrid. The thought of fighting a race of Teddy Ruxpins, especially giant ones with fusion-powered batteries, is quite scary.
There are only two choices in the path of Now and Forever. You may submit and enjoy limited freedom, flexing your tether only in the act of killing those who resist. Or you can join the dead, and eternally gaze upon your homeworld's sanguinely pulsating slave shield, while your brethren live as goldfish in a bowl. Psychic froggies need not apply.
The Drengin are heavily defended against my plasma beams but I have a lot of them and my shields, while not terribly useful against their rail guns, still do help some (44 shields = 6 against rail guns still not too bad). I thought I understood weapon/armor interplay, but now I'm back to square one.
*wonders if any modders are reading this* I am But modding is always limited by the engine. So far, it seems that immobile ships are out, stealth technology is out, carriers are out, space battles different than "two sides firing" are
BTW, I do lurk on Shrapnel's forums. I have no idea why SE fans have a tendancy to want to come on and poop on GalCiv or sit on their forums talking about how shallow GalCiv is. Because Gal Civ 2 has a release date I'll probably buy b
It's times like these that I can understand why many developers find console development so appealing. Why does configuration X have giant stars? Dunno. Why are the textures getting funny on configuration ng Y? Dunno. Why are the overlays disappearing on configuration Z? I dunno. I can definitely see why Civilization 4 went Windows XP-only. But we want to make sure Wi
"unless you are running on a box with 1GB of memory, swapping is an issue." Maybe, maybe not... I find that WinXP often mirrors the RAM in the swapfile, so that an application using 15 MB of RAM has a 30 MB footprint (15 real + 15 virtual); and sometimes it doesn't mirror anything, but just "swaps" as expected. It's impossible to guess how much memory an application really uses, better than a factor of 2 error margin, unless you know somet
Better yet, give them to a weak race in exchange for something you want, or give them to someone you hate, so that when the planets are taken a new war will start. But, this is probably all irrelevant now; I think the latest patch (non public) fixed it. One bullet point said "fixed an error where the human empire is used instead of the correct AI empire" or something like that; I believe this is a symptom of that bug. The announcement is m
Any time we talk about a new strategic element being added the questions we have to ask are: 1) Does it make the game more fun? 2) How does it affect the computer AI? 3) How much does it cost to implement? 4) How much time would it take to implement? These a
Ashbery: "I don't recall any major eco-friendly races in the sci- fi world." Alpha Centauri has an eco-faction; in David Brin's "Uplift" series, the galaxy is ruled by ecological mandates; Star Control II's Syreen were environmentalists; and in my opinion, any starfaring race must be profoundly environmentalistic or else they would have killed their homeworld prior to colonizing a new one A race with organic ships,
As Suralle pointed out, ships don't really have to bump into mines. 'Dumb' explosives are obselete in modern militaries today, let alone 200 years from now. It's not really reasonable to suggest that interstellar combat, in which two ships find each other in a cubic lightyear of space, and then quickly match velocities, is possible - but a ship would never encounter one of trillions of mines lurking in that same cubic lightyear. Both concepts are abstract, and if a ship can find its enemy, so
I love mines. Total Annihilation had them, Stars! had them, Space Empires has them, and heck, even World of Warcraft (Hunter class) and Half-Life have them. And any time I get a mine kill, I think jubilantly about how clever I am and how dumb my opponent is - they're just the most satisfying kills I can make. I probably use them to excess whenever they're available, because they're so darn fun. So... any chance GalCiv will support them?
Missiles, Energy Beams, Mass Drivers. Fun, but... looking at damage types in Master of Magic or Age of Wonders... perhaps there is room for more? A couple easy additions would be dual-type "Particle Beams" and "Plasma Torpedoes". When I say easy, I mean easy graphically and in terms of the game engine... the interface, of course, would be problematic since there are already icons for missiles, beams, and guns that fill the available spa
I think the whole roll system is screwed up. For example you could have the best fleet in the galaxy and it could easily be destroyed by a lucky roll. This is just a lack of strategy and putting too much faith in the dice. Einstein didn't believe events were based on dice rolls. But, he was wrong. O
Greetings from an old colleague, by the way (Renegade MOO). Cheers! Howdy! It's much nicer to meet in the forum of a game that won't **** goat **** Open betas are always a good sign!
Not being in-beta, I'm curious... Are these designs PURELY aesthetic and functionless? Or do adding, say, 'wings with missile mounts' increase cost and space? 'cuz I'd sure love the latter. Even a tiny increase in cost for a tiny (decimal) increase in HP from each mounted accessory would be fun. An expensive add-on holding (e.g.) a special sensor pod or external missile pod, which increases the ship's cost and effectiveness but not HP (since it is outside of the armor and m
I really don't see a point to those cinematic battles. Sure, they're fun to watch. The point of computer games is to be fun; therefore, the cinematic battles are successful.
Mmm, good idea. I certainly don't want to park my entire fleet, "The Neutral Smashers" around a neutral's lone system only to have them offer to trade me "Death Rays" for "Peanut Farming". They should feel ph3@r! On a more serious note, adding mistrust over troop buildup and fleet intentions, DMZs / contested areas, and shades of gray over what constitutes an incursion can only make the game more interesting! People certainly have these s
Oh, I see... this would only apply to search-and-evaluate AI.
"What about being good makes you a better defender(your ppl luv you and will do their upmost too defend ye) and, being evil makes you a better attacker?" -Lowa I like! I mean, consider - would you rather be attacked by Orcs or Amish? Er, bad example, but maybe Orcs versus Knights of the Round Table. The Knights would be falling over themselves trying to entertain their prisoners and offer them tea, while the Orcs... well, let's just
The Earth is bigger, has more rotational momentum, and thus takes longer to "tidelock". Popup Target, actually the rotational and orbital direction is not generally due to tides for large moons (of gas planets) but rather due to the fact that they formed in the same accretion disk... or so it is said in the legends of my people. If small (captured) moons orbit in the same direction as the planet rotates, I guess that might be tidal.
