Ship design is purely cosmetic. It's a load of fun, though

Nerva, try Jagged Alliance 2. It's the best game since X-COM in that genre. Probably better than X-COM, in fact... certainly a lot funnier.
Yay, keep up the good work - I want to laze around and reap others' mods for a while
It's easier to be a chef than eat the food at my university's cafeterias.
P.S. I now understand why the AI does not target what I would. The formula does not take into account whether or not the attack will be useful. For example, using the published formula, a ship with attack=1 will target a battleship with 60 defense v. all, 100 HP, and 40 attack (4:1 ratio) instead of its escorting fighters with 0 defense, 10 HP, and 2 attack (5:1 ratio), even though the escorts are much more vulnerable for their t
Interesting. Thanks!
I understand that loading a game forces you to skip a turn (due to the save-and-reload exploit). I wholeheartedly disagree with this feature in SP, regardless of whether it is enforced in the Metaverse. So check the dates when you save and load... they may be different.
greggbert, I want to agree with you, but honestly... how can you not notice the insane population explosion that all sentient species experience in GC2? Fast ships can't outrun barges with no engines whatsover ? Women and children join armies? Bahhh... that's peanuts compared to puberty at one month and birthing every month thereafter for one's entire life. While engaged in land combat in the army, of course. <img src="http://image
PAR: I accept your sentiments, and I'll apologize too. I was overly harsh; I understand that unless one couches English carefully, it can be interpreted to mean unintended things.
I understand that the dev team decided users could only mod data, never code. So, for example, they nixxed AI DLLs. I also wish I could re-implement the combat algorithms (shield energy, armor integrity, and hit ratios come to mind) but it appears that there will be no changes unless Stardock wants them, or a user employs decompilation techniques, followed by object-oriented-programming in x86 assembly.
I want cloaking too. It is vital for any mod that attempts to implement mines, for one thing. For another, I agree that it is a "strategy game staple". I know that I could add cloaking to an existing AI, and Froggy has much more applied AI experience than I, so he could, too. I remember fondly a duel against a friend in Command and Conquer in which my power plants were annihilated by stealth tanks. I love invading 10+ deep-behind-the-lines undefended provinces with a massive coord

Grouping a Lucky Ranger with two 2/2 heavy fighters, I won battle after battle after... well, 40+ battles. The small ships were never attacked (they would have been toasted) even though nothing short of a highly upgraded starbase could damage the Ranger. The enemy fleets would have done WAY better with a "random" targetting algorithm. Suggestion - keep the current algorithm (or an improved version <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2
P.S. I bought it in a store, partly for that reason. And yes, I AM happier.
Did you try burning a copy? I don't think they bury the music files in your registry and rootkit your OS. The game is wherever you put it. If you don't want to burn the game onto a disc, why don't you go ahead and return it? You sound like you'll be a lot happier with a hard copy; I can't imagine why you downloaded in the first place. There's no way Stardock can prove that anything they tell you will result in a functional copy 10 years
My current theory is that (one or more of): A) Not enough testing has been done to be statistically relevant; B) Considering that I almost always send colony ships blind, the AI might do it more than some people expect; C) Considering the strange behavior of AI troop transports (sometimes being built in hordes and launched unescorted), there is some ship-sending code hidden in a forgotten corner somewhere, with different rul
Congrats on the 27k. However, I think the equation is different for GC2. The sales drop-off is steep for games that are overhyped, bad, and stocked everywhere. Lesser-known games, in underrepresented genres with slow turnover, without much hype budget, that are good... can keep selling steadily for a long time. Consider X-COM and Sim City, for example. Neither had competition until their sequels.
Ola Nordhus said: Heh. Maybe you should send a note about this to some of the hardware enthusiast sites. Those guys can always use another way to test the stability of their overclocks, and it probably wouldn't hurt sales if GalCiv II became part of the regular test suite. It would probably be the first time a turn based s
You can look at the XML file, "GC2Types.xml". Right-click on it and you can choose to open it with Excel. Not pretty, but not too bad.
I'm new. Veteran of Star Control 1, 2, 3; MOO 1 and 2; Europa Univesalis; Civilization 1-4, Colonization and SMAC; MoM; HoMM 3 and 4; Dominions I and 2; Age of Wonders 1 and 2; Seven Kingdoms, Conquest of the New World, Settlers, Fantasy General, Stars!, Reach for the Stars, Spaceward Ho!, Ascendancy, Space Empires IV, Kohan, Total Annihilation, Warcraft 1 & 2, Starcraft, and most other well-known related games. But I never played GC1.
I didn't have Luck, and I got 2 of them in 5 turns.

For instance it would be nightmarshly harder to program an AI to specilized planets correctly and in the correct ratio's given all the variables in these games. Sure you a human who can be flexable and adapt can micromanage independent planets like that till every building you runs at 100%. The AI however

The reason is when you put your spending 50%science 50%mili , even if u had 2 identical planets, still only 50% of their potential for each building is used. I thought you were totall
