ME was the origins of "Windows Restore" and they simply hadn't got it right yet. Conversely Win2000 was regarded as 'bullet-proof' but I'm thinking that was relative....relative to ME. I could crash 2000 at will, though that was partly thanks to some alternate shells... Explorer.exe was for "girlie-boys"...;)

Redundancy backups...aka backups of backups. The prime issue is your OS drive as that's the 'system' whose integrity needs to be 'kept'. That can be an incremental image [Acronis] done every night with a full backup every week and all saved to a separate internal drive [obviously] and once a week or so the image is copied to an external drive. You keep an eye on both locations and delete older ones manually. Next trick is to do software database backups as well....

One really really really good reason to stay with Windows 7 is Microsoft doesn't go near it anymore. Microsoft doesn't mess with it.....even if you wanted them to. Utter peace and quiet.
