Just wrote a long post and the page reloaded and lost it somehow.
(Started this topic in the UQM forums, but I figured it would make sense to post here as well.) Well, after hearing a ton of references to "Starflight", and how it was a "spiritual successor" to SCII, I finally decided to give it a try. I decided on the Sega Genesis port, since that had the most "updated" graphics an

The Starflight universe felt so much bigger than Star Control. The plot was a little more open, the planets didn't run out of minerals, the time seemed to last longer. You had to have regular mineral runs in SF1 to generate money. In SF2 the trading system was quite elaborate. There were also minor (non-spacefaring) races spread throughout the galaxy that you could interact with. The SF lore was also stronger IMO, though either game has such strong lore compared to todays&#39

Ars Technica kinda trashes it. I believe they review the console version, but this isn't too encouraging.I'll still keep an eye on it, it looks like a blast. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/07/from-dust-lets-you-build-worlds-and-frustration.ars?comments=1#comments-bar

Mmm, lore. I got lost on the internet a week or so ago and started looking at sites dedicated to the old Starflight games, which I played when I was a kid. I was amazed at the amount of lore worked into those games. The plot lines and history of the universe were incredible and nothing short of epic. Obviously a different kind of game (starship universe explorer), but games today just seem flat comparatively. Anyway, the more lore the better. :)

Try Space Rangers 2 if you haven't already. It's not the same, but is a fun game for a bit. I've been chasing the dragon since SC2. I played Star Flight, and loved it. Star Flight 2, and loved it more. Star Control 2 was a worthy sprirtual heir to those games. The Moo (1&2) series was amazing, and GalCiv2 is the only game that comes close to feeling in the same class as the games I mentioned before. But I really want a spriritual successor to either StarFlight or Sta

You guys should probably just [link="http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php"]replay[/link]Star Control 2. ;) I end up doing that every couple years. The Ur-Quan music was amazing, though. First thing I thought of about the Ur-Quan was the song. However, this is a 4x game... unless the game is unbalanced, you aren't going to have any race that truly strikes fear into the player. The Ur-Quan ships could crush any ships the human player had in the first half of a StarCon game.
I just wanted to write another one for my current game at Obscene-difficulty, but in the end I think people are more interested in well written stories than in reports about "tough struggles". And as nobody else does, and I cannot compete with the "great story tellers" anyway, I won't
I'm much more interested in reading about games and players' struggles and successes as they play a game. I don't read the fan-fiction type AARs. So, if you go ahead and write

Sorry the game ended anti-climatically for you due to the events. So... if you had declared war on the Drengin first, they wouldn't have gotten all those annoying ships, right? I think I read that they only get ships given to them if they are the ones to declare war. That might have saved some cleanup time.
Just out of curiosity, when you Ascended, what was your Ethical stance? Evil, by any chance?
I Ascended on Evil. Is there a different ending if you Ascend with a different Ethical stance?
Now that Particlewave mentions alliances, the thing I find most annoying about having tech trading off is that some races won't research the alliance tech, preventing me from getting an alliance with them in spite of close relations.
Seconded. I keep tech trading on ONLY for that reason. Very annoying.

Fantastic AAR, thanks a lot for sharing. As a newer player, I learned a ton from this thread.
