I've noticed that quite a few people who are posting about performance problems also say they have some type of Sound Blaster sound card. Creative has been at fault many times in the past when games perform badly, too many times for me to recount really. Just on the off chance it's the problem here as well, could everyone that's got a Sound Blaster (or other Creative sound card) post here and report whether they're getting good performance or not? I have a Sound Blaster SE, I

Hmm.. I have performance problems as well, I too have a Sound Blaster... meaning ALL of us who are reporting problems in this thread thus far have a sound blaster. Perhaps it's the sound card that's causing this? It wouldn't be the first time Creative has been at fault when games aren't working properly.

Yeah... seems like Advent isn't a pickable race as far as I'm concerned. That one ability of theirs will bring any computer to its knees and at the same time makes it impossible to see anything worth a damn. It's getting harder to recommend this game when I'm seeing so many problems being posted about. I'm already personally responsible for at least 13 people buying the game, through my postings at various forums.

I'm confused, you say you have 1 gig of ram but also say the game takes up 1.5 gigs. This probably won't help you much, but free advice: Having a decent processor like that but an X800 and only 1 gig of RAM is a crime in this day and age. You can easily pick up a 2 gig pack of RAM for less than $50 without looking too hard. Also you can pick up a Geforce 9600 or if you feel more extravagant a 8800 GT for a very low price compared to how top-of-the-line cards used to be priced

My overclock is stable - been running this way for 10 months or more with no crashes outside what's incidental to certain software - but I'd be willing to try. First can you download my savegame and some sort of FPS monitoring software and see how low it goes with both fleets in view? Better yet output a graph of your fps during the battle. I know I said previously that my RAM was never maxed out but it seems that Sins does in fact fill the entire 1.6 gb of free RAM my computer has.

Some more information... I played a 2v2 yesterday, 3 hard AIs. Performance was quite good for most of the game with me getting between 55-60 fps during all normal circumstances. (60fps max due to vsync) However once a battle started all hell broke loose. Performance bogged down significantly when more than a few dozen ships were involved, moreso than I'd expect from Sins. I tried to capture some screenshots but unfortunately they didn't capture my RivaTuner Statistics Serve

Please define "steady frames"... I suspect we simply have different standards. Also I'm running on Very High... though as noted it doesn't make much difference even if I set it on low. Again, I'm not *complaining*, others might be but I'm just asking if this is normal and if there's anything I can do about it. Settle down guys... My motherboard is an Asus P5B-E, a very well-known and reliable board. My sound card is an Audigy SE... not something to be proud of, but I've only

Just to repeat, I can drop all my settings to low and turn off anti-aliasing, and I still get a better framerate in Crysis with all settings to high and AA off. My computer has no bottleneck, I've built computers for years and I very specifically chose all my hardware. I have one of the fastest consumer processors in the world besides quad-core ones, and they're out of the running since the game only uses two cores. At my current 3.15 ghz, I am 50 mhz away from having the fast

Mmm... getting warmer... the units were fully 3D, the terrain was "quasi-3D". It's a flat texture put in place to represent a real heightmap... and the heightmap is real 3D, ie, units rock as they go over bumps, shots get blocked, etc. Since I'm an attention whore I'll point out where you can download Absolute Annihilation v6.0, the final version of my TA mod. It features about 450 units, but unlike unit packs like TAUIP and UTASP, every unit has a unique function, they aren't all jus

FRAPS, the culprit? I really doubt it. I'm not talking about recording a video, I just mean displaying the framerate. FRAPS is extremely widely-used, I really doubt it's capable of reducing the framerate in any game by 15 fps - and even if it did, I would still be getting slow performance considering my computer. I tried reducing all my detail settings to low, and it gained me about 10 fps. I guess I have to agree, the game is just an incredible CPU hog, akin to SupCom. It's a damn

That's not necessarily 100% correct. You're probably also running all your Windows processes on a third CPU, so you're still a little bit ahead of a dual-core setup.

I thought Sins was working quite well on my computer. I noticed hiccups from time to time, but that happens. Then I ran FRAPS to take some videos of the great battles to show my friends, and I notice... wow I'm only getting about 15-25 FPS most of the time. Are there any things that can cause this sort of rather mediocre performance? Considering the game is intended for people with respectable but not cutting-edge computers, I would think I'd have 40+ FPS at the worst of times. My com
Nope, pirates can't travel between stars. Additionally, I believe even with multiple bases in the same system, there will be only one raid total, not one raid per base.
I'm not sure about that, I played a map once that had two pirate bases and there seemed to be two raids launched after every "auction", one from each base. There were also two "cutlass" icons on the pirates screen, one for each target (no leftovers from previous auction). This was with version 1.00 though, ma

Anyone else surprised to see Chris Taylor of GPG working with Frogboy and co. so soon after that piracy discussion? Must've been a little awkward, after Chris (among others) went off on a rant about how piracy will doom us all and then our Frogboy (and other Stardockers) replied, " LOL NOT RLY , make games they don't need to spend $800 to play", and then proceeded to release a game which did

I would like to see a lot of things in an expansion but most of all I'd like it to be polished and not rushed out the door to capitalize on the original's success, you know the way it goes... "let's capitalize on christmas but alienate our customers, I'm sure that'll work out" "Good idea Jim, how about I buy you a golf course" Hmmm... I think something I like very much about this game is the lack of micromanagement. You can generally trust your ships not to do anything *es

Well gotta at least hand it to him for being a man at the end, I know a lot of people who'd make excuses about why they lost. I hope you find a good strategy in the future, though I don't play the game enough to get good at anything but TEC, I'm probably held back a bit by all this discussion about how TEC is the strongest or easiest to play.

Oh my goodness. Kruelgor, go back to Halo. Assuming the MAGOG clan has other members, I can't believe they can stand an embarrassment like you. edit: LOL you're the lead MAGOG guy? Well that explains why you haven't been laughed off the team, now I just wonder why anyone would want to join. Oh and I have a secret keyboard trick too. I type /ignore and don't have to see this nonsense in IRC as well. Gives me a huge advantage against anyone that listens to you, not that anyo

This is probably a stupid thing to ask, but can't you also make multiple trade ports per planet? It never occurred to me until someone mentioned it in another thread, since in every other 4X I've played you can only build one of something on each planet. So... yeah, research colony size improvements and trade ship cargo capacity. Also, I didn't realize this until my 5th or 6th game, but culture is EXTREMELY important once your empire begins to expand. If you've got a planet more than

To add to my previous post, if Stardock sold one copy of Galciv 2 at $40 through digital distribution, they would make the same amount of profit as another company selling 20 copies through a publisher at the same price. In other words, if Stardock gets just 5,000 digital sales, they will have the same income as a developer who sells 100,000 copies through a publisher. Can you see why Stardock is triving in a tiny market segment (4X Strategy) while Crytek is in bad shape in a major mar

I find it laughable that they speak about pirates like they're the biggest problem the industry faces. How about publishers? I was in close contact with a Hungarian developer a few years back, and the "lead guy" of this company told me they get paid 5-7% of the game's PROFIT. Not even the game's sales, but the game's profit. It's the same unconscionable story for music artists. The ONLY way they can make enough money to live off of is by touring! This is why you're starting to hear

I got about 3 hours into my first game before things started really making sense. After that I restarted and played a small 1v1 to learn how to fight properly, etc, how to defend against pirates... On my third game, which lasted 11 hours, I won. After my fifth long game, I'd learned most of the nuances... so this is about 40 hours in. Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty nasty learning curve. It really should've been remedied by some better tutorials prior to release, but most of th

Oh, TA=Twilight of the Arnor. I don't really know a lot about the exansion, tbh.... I intend to buy it immediately on release, but I don't really want to ruin my impression by playing the unfinished version. Yes, certainly there must be an upper limit. I said a couple times I thought 200% should be as high as was allowed, I think. Or maybe I didn't, I just never made any examples above 200%. Sorry if I wasn't clear. In any case even if that wasn't the hard limit, I don't th

I'm aware that we have multiple hull sizes, that's not what this is about, and I'm not talking about a mod but an actual change to the original game. It's a suggestion for SD. @starstriker I don't know anything about the mod you're talking about, but it doesn't sound comparable to what the OP is about. The idea can be summed up in 4 ways: 1) If you have a ship with 10 hull points and an engine with 5 space required and a gun with 6 space required, it doesn't mean you have to

I tried FreeOrion a little while back, so far there's not much to see and they haven't announced much progress since then. It sounds like a great project but I'm starting to wonder if they'll ever finish. Back on topic, I think that besides the added flexibility, this idea would add something much more important and interesting. I mentioned it briefly at the bottom of my original post... If you were an economic superpower with crappy military research, you could still fight a
