I understand why game makers are in love with making RTS games. Generally RTS games sell a lot more copies than TBS games do. Most game makers enjoy making money, and especially publishers!
Haoh
That idea is about as "new" as the controllable tactical combat idea. Maybe something we'll see in Galciv 3.
I for one would have never bought this game if it had "space invader" graphics. I never got past the demo for Galciv 1 because of the graphics. Call me superficial if you want, but at the end of the day Galciv 2 has become one of my favourite games because of great graphics combined with fantastic game play.
I say that if you are on track to release it in December, release it in December. Stardock's track record for updating this game has surpassed any other game company in living memory, so if a December release leads to one extra patch coming out, who cares? Of course most people are voting for later release because they feel an earlier release will have less features and/or be more buggy, or think it's fun to be able to play around with a Beta prior to the proper release. But I don't thi
I think this would put extra strain on the memory limit, since every race has unique ship styles. Given they are working so hard to find a solution to that problem I doubt it would be possible for a while.
The clock should be do-able...we've talked about it in the past, but didn't want to seem pompus. One of MOO3's first announced features was an 'alarm clock' to help gamers pry themselves away from the overwhelming addictiveness of the title.
Sarcasm alert!!
I have actually upgraded the video driver since posting the original debug file, they are now current as of September 2007, so that shouldn't be the problem. Good point though about the other drivers, I will have to look up some new ones.
Just want to further clarify this problem. I first encountered the slowdown effect after building my first asteroid base next to my home planet. This makes me think it's something to do with the archived files or something, because obviously that was very early on in the game and as such there was nothing happening to tax my system. Or perhaps something wrong with my system memory? Somehow loading new textures completely cripples the frame rate.
Updating to the latest drivers seems to have fixed the problem, I haven't encountered any further CTDs. Another issue is causing me grief with Dark Avatar though, something not present in Dread Lords. It happens whenever I encounter a ship I haven't seen before. For example, I meet the Drath for the first time, or I see an Altarian colony ship for the first time. When this happens, whenever that "new" ship is on the screen, the game slows down to a crawl. If I scroll the screen so that the ship
Hi there, Thanks for the quick reply. I had done a driver update only a few months ago so didn't think it would be that, but I have had a few minor errors with other games too. I have done a fresh install of the latest drivers and so far so good. I wondered what that repeating error message was...
I've recently come across a CTD bug that happens on both DL and DA which didn't used to happen on previous versions. I am using the current non beta version of the game. Whenever I try to access the Trade screen before I have researched the trade ability, everything just turns black. For DL the program crashes and I get sent back to Windows. On DA it's even worse as I get back to windows in about 16 color mode, and then my monitor just shuts off and I have to reboot. A workaround to this is to m
The way Galciv treats planetary invasions at the moment, you are wiping out the entire population of tax paying citizens and replacing them with whatever's left of your armed forces. So, I doubt there would be much left on the planet to disagree with your way of doing things! As it is I'm sure the slaves of the slave pits wouldn't mind being liberated!
They probably hold a "slave of the month" award ceremony as well. Seriously though, I don't see how this can be implemented without scrapping alignment choices or significantly altering how it works. Essentially by making every race truly unique, it will clearly define the ethics and culture of each race and hence whether they really are good or evil. I could never see races like the Drengin being anything but evil anyway, so I wouldn't mind if the choice of "researching" your alignment
I like this idea regarding the right of passage treaty Eloryn. I think this is the most realistic and best option to be implemented, and it least gives you some choices about what to do when the AI parks a scout ship next to your planet and that sort of thing. Should be possible to implement because from memory this is similar to how it worked back in Civilization I! I like the concept of the treaty but am not very keen about the original idea of limiting the speed of ships, as previously mentio
Looks very good. The question is then, can the Drengin race build slave pits and still choose a good alignment? Seems to me the unique tech trees are going to pretty much make choosing your alignment obsolete.
Why would it be taking over?
I personally think this whole "speed limit" thing is all too complicated. Why not just make it how it is now: if you get too close to the AI's territory they start to get annoyed at you and may request that you move. If you are on good enough terms with a race you can negotiate a 'right of passage' treaty, then this neutralises the negative effect and you can pass through their territory as you please. Likewise AI civs may try to negotiate a treaty with you, and if you don't like them parking th
That sounds like too much micromanagement to be able to set the speed of individual ships within your sphere of influence.
The unique tech trees do sound fantastic. It should really make it worthwhile to play as all the races in the game. As it stands at the moment, there are still some races I haven't played as because there isn't that much differentiation between them. But now there is incentive and it should make each race feel really different. I look forward to reading all the descriptions of the new techs too! Must be a heck of a lot of work developing all of this. The 'willingness to trade' sounds like a
I hope you'll still be able to invade the territory of races you don't have an agreement with. It could lead to some very interestingly tense diplomatic moments. I imagine the Drengin could make good use of these treaties as a welcome mat for their attack fleets!
If every race has a unique tech tree, what does this mean for tech trading? Will it be removed completely, limited to common technologies between races, or work some other way?
This is excellent news and I really like the new features, especially making the races more unique. Should really give incentive to replay using all the different races available. One question on this new direction though: what does this mean for tech trading? Does this mean you can now potentially obtain alien technologies? Hope this wont be exploited so that the player can end up with every technology available in the universe!
I like the idea of not being able to meet with other races on every turn. But there should be a "Hold urgent talks" button or something like that which you can use once a year to guarantee you can meet with a race in the event of a declaration of war against you etc.
I will be very disappointed if the feature gets cut. With the previous poll asking which feature was most looked forward to, myself and a lot of people voted for the Epic Generator. If it does have to get cut then I hope there is some sort of compromise like perhaps a replay feature that shows an overview of the galaxy and highlights major events, Civilization style.
I would love to see a Fantasy 4x game, particularly one that focussed on Castle design and sieges etc. In my opinion there hasn't been a game that's depicted castle sieges very well since the game "Siege" and that was released ages ago. Medieval Total War didn't do a very good job of it since you couldn't design castles and the options were limited, and Stronghold was too much RTS like for my liking. A great opportunity for Stardock at the very least to bring the 4X formula to a fantasy setting.
