I use the farming tiles too, i think they are great unless they are on a PQ<10 then there is no real use for it. By the time you research better morale techs that affect your civ bonuses and entertainment techs for the buildings theres no reason to ignore them. I like trying to get ludicrous populations on planets (but not got anything near those numbers duckness!!).

I play medium maps primarliy but I do go gigantic etc occasionally and I agree I never have as much trouble / war / loss on the gigantic maps. But with other game sizes from the sounds of things here I must be playing a different game! On the medium maps it is carnage on all but a handfull of occasions! The AI resource starbases typicall have 16/3/3 att near the early game (when I am still using small hulls) so I cant go near them. The Thalans in my last game had ships with 12 moves
Does the AI take into account the fact that you might be at war with another race in that sector when it looks at your military presence building up there? Here is the situation I found myself in last night: Playing a medium galaxy with 6 Tough AI. I have habitable planets set to Abundant so that more "sharing" of systems occurs. I do this to encourage hostile dynamics. For example a 5 planet system with 4 habitable planets usually has 3 different owners where borders are closeby
Yeah I get those errors too. Annoying since save & reload fixes it but I have to notice it is happening first! Its more obvious when it happens to tiles with bonuses like 300% manufacturing but thats not always the case. Also reloading the game takes you into that initial Turn where no production is progressed and no research is done. And the "1 turn is really 2 turns to complete" is a regular feature of my early game. The building reports 1 turn to complete and hitting next turn gets
Yes as Ohalland says you need your REAL serial number not the serial number from the manual. Not the serial number from the manual on the sticker. They may call it a serial number and then ask for a serial number at activation but they dont mean that one!!!! You have to use that serial number on the website to get your REAL serial number (also called a serial number just to avoid any confusion <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 ALIGN="a
I am never in a position to attack colony ships anywhere near the start but then I only play up to medium maps currently. Chasing a 3 move AI colony ship with a 2 or 3 move attacker would seem futile to me at the start since I cant see very much of anything (we are talking the start here). So they are likely to already be where they are going when I notice them through the fog. And if i did build an attacker with the 1st weapon available? Well, then i'd be doing that 3 mov
I just got the same thing for a manufacturing bonus! I had a Factory on a 300% bonus and my social production was at 2, military at 2 and tech at 19 (there are other buildings). It didnt matter what % I put the social spending slider to, the social prod on my planet only went between 2 and 4. Its going to take 200 turns to build a technology capital on one of the few planets I have with manufacturing bonus but around 47 turns on my lowest production planet!
Some good questions about combat. I have trouble working out the figures especially in cases where I am the only one with a Def type in the fight but I am the one scoring 0's over and over while the AI scores high. I swear it sometimes looks like the battle readout is "offset" and the scores I should be getting are appearing for the AI. But then I only look at the att/def readout of the ships. So when my 15 beam / 4 point def ships score repeated 0's against enemy 6 missil
Get the "blue" techs that will get you better research buildings to upgrade. Also what level are you playing on? I play challenging most and I dont have dedicated research planets, I am more likely to focus on pop. and cash on larger planets (i.e only ever 3 or 4 factories and 3 or 4 labs). My overall spending at 100% and my tech spend at ~60%. I can keep up enough to never fear falling too far behind. Dont forget to build your technology capital on a planet with labs built
Some good points in there Quitch regarding the ways to go to war. I think finding out you are at war by being attacked would add alot to the way I approach a game but shouldn't be limited to bad empires. Anyone should be able to do it, but maybe good is less likely to do it.
That relations penalty for the "victory techs" line is as intruiging idea Baturkey. I think that the AI should be able to win in all the ways you enable at the start since those are the Victory Conditions. I also think they should be concerned with winning the game either by themselves or as part of an Alliance. I have seen 3 smaller AIs form Alliances in my last game in the face of 2 large opponents.
Campaigner I may have read your post wrong but it looks like you got Range and Speed mixed up. Range is how far from your existing planets / starbases you can travel (the 0.2 and 0.9 you mention), Speed is how many moves you go per turn and will be 2 on the defaults. You dont need any new techs to get a faster Colony ship. A Cargo Hull will fit 1 Colony Module, 2 Hyperdrives and 2 Basic Support modules right from the start. It will only have 3 moves but 3 moves is more than 2! <b
You can activate without internet access. They will do the activation by email if needs be and since you can go online and post here you no doubt have access to email. I believe the position they take is that any enhancements require activation. i.e. you can play the game you bought and paid for (as you point out v1.0) with no bother. Look at it another way - all the enhancements in the patches are free. If you read the Change Log for 1.1 its a veritable tomb of changes, tw
Oops, missed your last question. Soldering is the strength of your troops once you invade. So if your Soldiering ability is at 25% your troops will have an advantage of 25 on the planet invasion. You can also see enemy Soldiering ability with espionage and decide how many troops to send against their planets. Or use trial and error, its your empire! Research things like Orbital Bombardment and Space marines to increase your Soldiering ability. Some of these techs also give you additio
I dont think the "never" being displayed is a bug. If you look at your Social production box it will have the Therefore your effective Social production (as I understand the new system) is 0. When you select a building the "never" is correct. But when you put it in the queue a number should appear correctly since Social production is now in use and not be
Yeah, planetary Invasion is the one you are after. I never escort my transports. I use recon ships to spot trouble but keep my transports as transport only fleets. My warships tend to move 4 or 6 speed but my transports are designed as 9 or 11 speed, so mixing them up for protection would slow them down too much. Their "defence" is to spot danger in time and run away really fast.
Yeah, that tripped me up last night trying to activate the patch. Bit misleading as the Euro Collectors Edition calls the GC2-xxxx number the serial number. A quick look around on the forum and a similar link to the one above sorted me out soon enough.
I agree the patching process (i.e. registering) is a pain compared to the original install. But such a thing is only required for enhanced content as stated somewhere on this site. If you want to play the game in 10 years time and just happen to have formatted your drive by then you can get the game you payed for installed no hassle exactly like the first time you installed it. Neat eh!! I actually dont mind this part of it. The bit that rubs me up the wrong way is the ser
if you have payed more than a few games you need to start deleting some files. You could start with the my documents/my games/gal civ2 folder. you can move any ship files beforehand then move them back later. That should cure your 5 planet abundance.
My last few games i have used Mil Starbases purely for defence. I check the foriegn stats to see the general mood of the galaxy before deciding on them but it just so happens that my last 3 games were violent and war torn affairs. Bliss. I tend to only release new ship designs when I have some tech I deem worthy of the redesign i.e. if I can double (triple?) the damage output, or have a significant new def (or need a different def type altog
I am big fan of graphics in PC games especially sci-fi but I dont see a problem with the graphics here. I certainly consider the ship builder graphics to be plenty good enough. Yes alot of the other graphics are lacking somewhat but I dont really care once I am playing the game. I think the graphics range from "functional" to "great" in various parts of the game. I understand the trade-off that has been made and I think the results are more
@Pnakotus: there is already a display for alien relations between each other. It is in the report screen for foriegn relations. It lists each of the other players and the relations with the selcted AI (wary / friendly / close etc) as text. Dont know if you need espionage to see this or what level you need espionage at if you do but I can always see this info when I go there. Helps me make decisions. But I agree on your point, its
Nice catch.
Yeah its attack, def and hit points in the mix. I always start by getting enough tech to build a 2/0 small hull (lasers) straight away. Either 2 or 3 speed depending on tech. The idea is to spam them at the start as 4 fleets of 3 and not get sidetracked on other research. The computer always builds 1/0 ships so you will jump up the mil strength chart. Then focus your research on your civ. Or your next mil ship design if you are t
Wow GoatRider, how did you get away with that!? Maybe theres no Americans online to read it yet... I dont want to move the capital. Having it in India or wherever makes no real difference since the map has too litlle detail to specify "my house" as the location. I am in charge of the race after all.
