Hi Amon85, yes that is indeed a crap bug . I would suggest that you follow the instructions in the sticky "Problem IN-GAME?". It asks for a few details and the debug.err which you can find in the game directory. Basically its made automatically so after a crash search for debug.err.

Never noticed that before - I have noticed that if you use the the focus buttons on a newly colonised world the costs for maintenance and production change and if you remove the focus they dont change back. I always find the number of turns left is a bit screwy, like its a rounded up or down value so it only displays as integers. Last night I was researching a tech that goes from 8 turns to 6 turns in just one (hey I aint complaining!). Maybe a whole lot of labs just got fi
@Kimo Hardy, I think you are looking in the wrong place for the costs in your example. Typically buying a ship costs 10x the cost to build. For example buying your 480 ship outright should cost 4800 (minus any civ abilities) so I see the costs for upgrade as: The difference in the cost of the upgrade to the original, multiplied by 10 and factoring in any civ bonuses you have. In your example the difference in the costs is 480 - 307 = 173 Multiplied by 10 = 1730b
the Ai could do it too, but they would need to make their ships incredibly fast.. which it normally isn't. I regularly see ships with 9, 14 and 16 movement from the AI. Scares the s**t out of me sometimes. They are rarely used to their advantage though, maybe they cant see far enough to truely appreciate that speed whereas you and I can just r
Dude, seriously, like, update your drivers !! While your audio drivers may be the newest even at 2004 or 2005 check for updates anyway. But you have a geForce3 and a driver dated last year. Thats no good. Old drivers = CTDs. You know to post your debug.err so I will direct you to the "Problem IN-GAME?" sticky, point 6, he's talking to you! That 90%? You are a part of it! Update your drivers and try again.
and sometimes you can build a really cheap ship in 0 turns immediately after conquest. And sometimes you can build a really expensive ship in 0 turns immediately after conquest! Always worth checking what you can get away with.
The AI has been improved in recent patches and you can see the difference anywhere you look in the game (the buildings AI uses, the ships it redesigns etc). I could come up with a list of things I want the game to be but the way I see it is this; the game I bought was fantastic and any content from the patches are a welcome bonus but not expected. I can sit and play the game I bought without them. I definately wouldnt go and say : "I don't think they should try to se
Its just you, but seriously, you need to update those drivers man !! Your gfx driver is from 2005 which is just wrong (i have an older nVidia card than yours and the new drivers are dated like April 2006) and your SB Live must have a newer driver than 2002!!. My built in sound card (which sucks) manages to have 2005 drivers so a Creative SB Live definatley does. What are all the other sound card device entries? You have AC97 Audio which to me sounds like a built in motherboard s
Whats the nodding up and down? Do you mean how they kinda bounce around like a screensaver instead of space faring civilisations at war?! When I start a battle with a mixed fleet, for example 1 large ship and the rest small or tiny, they all start in a line and the small / tiny ships move forward "faster" and so its looks really cool initially.
Mid-game in my last effort, I used tiny hulls in fleets with 1 Large hulled ship per fleet. So there may be 12 tiny ships and one large. More, obviously, with logistics. The reason for this? Well, hmm, it looks fantastic in the battle viewer! It just "looks" like a Carrier ship and launched fighters when the battle starts. I could do this with small hulls too and get better stats but its not quite the same visual effect. I also name all the large ships since there is only like 6 of t
could you trade the ship off of them?
I got the retail box (collectors edition). When I registered the serial number on the website they gave me a new serial number (with no dashes) on screen that I can use to get the updates / patches etc. I had to activate the game once when i downloaded and installed v1.1. It asked for an email address and the (new) serial number. That was it. I dont use Stardock Central. I only have 1 Stardock game and find it easy enough to update to official releases with the "update" button on the
A good simple rush there. Sounds repeatable since you dont seem to rely on your allies for anything and the cash is available. For those that dont rush I would suggest the following: -Dont expand very much if at all. Maybe take that PQ4 planet above you. -Dont bother with Def techs until you are comfortably destroying Dreads. -Dont use the bigger hulls (I use small) in fleets so you can get more ships and therefore more shots off (ships are gonna die in 1 hit early on a
@smjjames I actually like the 4 and 5 PQ planets so I grab them too. I know the theory that the small planets will flip but at the start of the game it is handy to have a planet that you can stick 2 factories and a starport on and let it build constructors or small fighters. Also you may be against a naturally loyal race so flipping may not be an option. People also set these up as lab planets, build a factory and 2 labs then upgrade the factory to a lab. No starport just research.
Maybe it is a bug and maybe its not. I think tradeoffs for size and cost are important, they give you options when you are against the ropes. Okay, in your example they are not very different but in another example the nano-ripper, it has insane damage and an insane cost compared to anything near it in the tree. A trade-off for an early tech. Perhaps if it didnt use up any more space than previous models it might make more sense... I like the variety rather than have eve
I start with 65% soc, 23% research and 12% mil. I always buy my first factory on homeworld. I sometimes buy my colony ships. I sometimes buy the first factory on my colonies. I almost never use focus. Its a judgement call on the situation at hand. I dont change the sliders (coz unused Soc prod goes to military anyway) until money is becoming tight and the colony rush (however far) is near done. Then its 20% soc, 75% research and 5% mil (or 0% if I already have enough constructors
@Frookie I am now on Deception (the Earth one) which is about mission 8 (?). In the missions inbetween I must admit I have had some "fun" and I have also had some "non-fun" too. I dont think I will play this one out as it is gigantic and I only have 2 planets and there are none to take. I also cant reach anyone for ages all around. In one mission I did nothing, absolutley nothing but take 3 planets and tech. Never saw a single Dread ship. Never built a single battleship before I had p
Its not really useless though is it?
Yeah ignore Defences, go for attack and stick to ship sizes that you can make bigger fleets out of. I personally use small hulls because I dont use Mil starbase anymore and need the space for more speed and more weapons. Climb the laser tech tree to phasors on this level and you can really stick it to them. Trade techs with your allies to keep up with the useful techs you will be ignoring. Build the fast interceptors to protect your allies colonies. If you see shields on the Dreads yo
@el conquest, from what I can tell you keep nothing. You start the map with a preset tech level. I thought this was fixed regardless of what you get in the last map. If its not I'm going back to the start and hitting end turn a hundred times with research at 100% before i move on!
Frookie, except its not just me they are invading, my allies lose planets and retake planets like its going out of fashion. I also share all my tech but I cant get all the soldering techs before the Dreads invade. No chance. So they will get at least 2 planets off me (or the same one twice!). I do agree with the honey-trap idea and I have tried mil starbases in the past (pre 1.1) but I find the 14 move escorts jump straight in past my slower ships before I can stop them. It doesnt ma
The Bonus tiles not being applied happens on Medium maps too.
I agree, the dreadlords capture tech off u and your allies. They can form fleets. Hmm, is this then how they get Defence techs? I thought the weakness of the Dreads is that they dont adapt, they are just hard and stay that way. In the game I just played I quit in frustration (was sssssoooooo ridiculous) because a Dread escort (yes a little 14hp
Actually I would advise the exact opposite of what p22 just said! (no offence dude, just the way I play that mission). Ignore the Drengin and Yor and focus on the Dreads at the start. Dont expand beyond another 2 planets or so (you start with 3 right?). I can never do this mission if I go further at the start. Go for Plasma and get small ships that can move at least 4 and attack at least 4. Biuld them over and over. Build up on laser techs, soldiering, drives, logistics and
I think whats misleading on the difficulty level is that you are setting the difficulty of the AI and not the campaign itself. So yes, as far as the campaign is concerned it is backwards but for the rest of the game it is as clear as day. Since the level affects all AI players then your allies will be better for it. The dreadlords are so tough I doubt you will notice the boost they might get. I found not expanding too quickly helped me consolidate my position. I used the co
