Yes, the Dread Lords will still appear in TA sandbox games. It is a random event, but apparently they really cut back on how often it happens.

Yes, you can strip a planet of population. But the AI won't pay much for it. Instead, put a bunch of transports in orbit - enough to depopulate the planet. Then sell the planet without launching the transports - the AI will pay for a fully populated transport, but since all ships in orbit launch when ownership changes hands, you get several filled transports and they get a unprofitable planet.

The "disease" event has pretty much the same effect on the AI that the spy event does, because they won't stop their current research to get the cure until the current research is completed. The difference is that if you have the ability to uncripple specific AIs if you choose to, by selling them the cure.
How do I get to the "sandbox" battles. All I see is the campaign option.
When you launch the game, select "new game". In Twilight it is the top button, I don't remember exactly where it was in the earlier versions.
I tried my idea after posting that question without checking back here first. I had actually figured out the NO part of that because it wouldn't let me select something without a prerequisite completed, but I had not figured out the top line part of it. I think I pretty much have the idea now with research. The big problem with campaign games is that they are really long and drawn out making "practice" games annoying. I get t

It only applies if 1) you give them your treaty (them giving you theirs is irrelevant) 2) you are the one that attacks (joining a war to support an ally counts as attacking) As to what the penalty is, you get an additional negative factor in your relations with all other civs, something like "don't trust us". It's the same penalty you get for not supporting an anny if they get attacked. Really all it does is make alliances harder to form and all the AIs will be somewha

Looking back at it, yeah that makes sense. In TA the techs for starbase modules were rearranged quite a bit, and getting to those modules is the equivalent of researching to the end of a weapon or defense line in terms of time and cost. Add in that about half of the tech trees don't even have those techs and it is not hard to see how it gets overlooked.
There´s a side fact I`m not so sure about. I researched Xalax-defense and Thulon-weapon focus, and added 2 ships with each one of them to my fleets. It should have added 20% increase in both attack/defense, but didn´t. The only thing was added was the support the ships had from the starbases....
The fleet modules don't act on the bonuses you are getting from the starbases. You were getting +20% bonus to the 1 attack and 1 defense that was actually on each sh
Another question: Can I select a tech to research that is 2 steps out as a way of guiding those extra points of research when the prerequisite tech is completed? (Example: selecting Aquatic or Heavy Gravity world thereby pulling the research through Advanced Colonization)
I haven't tried that (that I know of), but I'd bet against it. At least in my experience, overflow will always go into the same tech if the tree branches. In the colonization line, the points will alwa

Research is an empire-wide aggregate value, it sounds like you are looking at an individual planet. At the top of the research screen you should be able to see the total research output for your empire. Research output on each planet is based on the structures on the planet. If you highlight a research building, it will tell you its maximum output as well as a maintenance cost per turn. Bonus tiles will increase the output of a research building placed on that tile by the listed perce

The basic answer is you can only research ONE tech at a time. However, if you have a very large research output applied to a cheap tech, you will produce more research points than that tech requires, and the overflow will be applied to the next tech in line. Giving random numbers pulled out of my ass to illustrate the point: Say you have an output of 1000 points, and you are researching Lasers 1, which costs 200 points to research. When Lasers 1 is finished, the remaining 800

In the campaign, you are stuck with them. It's designed that way. For sandbox games, on the last page of game set up you get to choose opponents. Under the box showing which opponents are currently in the game, there is a window showing information on the currently selected AI race. For each race you can choose starting relations, make sure this is set to anything but "team". This setting is about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the screen and roughly centered (going from memory)

Depends on how you define major city. The Dragon Lance world has at least a dozen good sized cities, and more if you consider smaller but important race-specific areas like Kendermore or Mt. Nevermind. There are also many smaller towns and villages scattered all over.

Trading post modules will not show a planet bonus. They affect the little minifreighter that travels on the trade route between planets. The only modules that will affect the planet itself are the ones that say "increase military, social, and research by x%". The assign button, and the lines leading to the planet: http://img199.imageshack.us/i/52897696.gif/
1) the planet is inside the ring 2) I have built several mining modules
Do you have a mining starbase built around a floating crystal thing, or a free standing starbase? Assuming you haven't renamed it, when you select it you will see something like Mining Starbase 237 or Military Starbase 192. Influence or Economic are other possibilities. If you see it named Mining Starbase, it does NOT give individual planets bonuses, it benefits your entire empire.

Yeah, that's the Jagged Knife event. They are basically a minor race that takes your palnets by revolution instead of invasion. There is no defense, but it only happens once. The best way to deal with them is to retake the planets as quickly as possible, before they can build ships. They also get ALL the tech anyone has when they appear, so they can be pretty hard to take down.

I'll call them AI #1 and #2. From the way you have explained the situation, you were "cool" with #1 and allied to #2. #1 and #2 were also allied to each other. When #1 attacked you, #2 would have been left with the choice of breaking the alliance with you (by refusing to help) or breaking the alliance with #1 (by helping and attacking them). In this fairly rare situation, they are not asked to do either - if the player is in the same situation as #2, you will not even get the pop up
