They pull that stuff on me on Suicidal. Like they're not expecting me to defend my homeworld or something I'm sure they'll fix that... Usually the transport comes in with escorts though.

Try reinstalling the game.
One of the problems I find with 4X games is that in the late game, the game performance gets increasingly slower. Is there anything that I can do improve this? Try playing on a smaller map size.
I'm only playing on Normal. I presume at higher levels that the AI would just show up with superior numbers and drop ships and start taking planets before I could respond adequately. They pull the same tactics on you on Suicidal... only they're faster at it.
Here's my personal opinion: I originally "aquired" GalCiv2 from a "friend". I played it for a week, loved it, and bought it for these reasons (In order of importance): 1) It's a game I enjoyed 2) Software patches 3) Direct Download option 4) Forum access 5) I have the cash to buy as many games as I want Note: I'm a paying customer, but I like to try before I buy. I hate that "I got it sticked to" f
Well, I know Technological Centers don't give the 100% bonus as stated in their fluff text... maybe all research bonuses are similarly screwy.
I've noticed that they value some techs over others, not just weapons... Anything that gives trade or diplomacy bonuses... Conversely, they don't give a damn about Sensor techs. One thing that irks me about the trade window is: say I have 4 techs I want to trade for X amount of BC... if I trade them all at once, I'll get significantly less BC in the end than if I traded those techs for BC individually. But that's not what irks me... What gets to me is manipulating that damn money sl
I think that MAYBE... just MAYBE... it might affect in some small way whether an AI chooses to attack you. It hints at it in the manual.
Myeah, in theory But I figured I'd check both to be sure. EDIT: Or do you mean the OP's sentence: "Also, if the race is intelligent or above I have not seen but a few successful attempts." I've reread that a few times, and I'm not sure what it means.
That's the best strategy to win, hands down -- trade techs for BC to fuel your nonexistant economy to research your heart out. It actually it destroys them on Intelligent. Larger maps require a different initial strategy than smaller maps, but hey, you're human, you can adapt to anything. I've tried other strategies, and none work nearly as well (or at all, on Suicidal). The fact that you added more races (to 9, as you stated) just makes that strategy that much more effic
Heh, that's funny. AFAIK, trade goods can be used as a bargaining chip... meaning... if you were the one who had it originally, then you could put it in the trade window and use it to leverage whatever trade you wanted. The AIs don't use them that way, though... it's humorous that you chose to trade for it Don't feel bad, I did the same thing for a diplomatic translator haha... 2500 BC down the tube
Ships are worthless in trade. I don't think this is intended, is it? I can't even charge 1 BC for 36 defenders early in the game, even though the race is currently at war with a vastly superior force.
I really don't think that Technological Capitals are giving the bonuses that are intended. I.E. they're not doubling research output for that world, they're adding like 12 instead... maybe it's giving a 25% bonus, but "doubling" as the ingame text means a 100% bonus -- the same as a Manufacturing Capital.
I don't even pay attention to the default ships. Wish I could delete them
I agree that the AIs trade tech constantly, and you screw yourself by not participating in, or ideally dominating, this tech trade mini-game. The games tends to favor this strategy(I find, even on the largest of maps), which, I think it would be GREAT if the devs could come up with a way to make other playstyles work just as well without reducing the effectiveness of this strategy. For example: It would be very interesting to play as a war profiteer. This playstyle does
You have a good point, and I agree that each race should have it's own playstyle/strategy. I don't know which AI suggestions you're referring to (besides the tax rate one). There's always room for improvement, and I believe the AIs can be improved beyond what they are now, while still haven't seperate playstyles. I don't personally believe an AI should limit itself by not raising its taxes when the situation warrants it though... I don't know how big of a problem this is, however,
I've also been in situations... say... around week 104... where I am #1 militarily, and can also trade to get leading weapon techs from others that have "neutral" or better relations... I agree that I diplomacy probably has something to do with it.
I believe trade works both ways in all respects. If you make X amount from a trade route, so does the other guy. If that's the case (and I believe it is, since that's the way the game seems to be designed by all the information available), then yes, trade starbases affect the other guy as well.
On "normal" levels the AI is a retard in many respects
I learned by playing many many games on a small map vs. 4 opponents with default settings. I used a custom race. My first game I started on Cake-walk. Then I played many games on normal. When it looked like I wasn't going to win, or I realized a made a huge mistake, I reloaded my game to week 1 and tried again (although I didn't metagame -- meaning, I didn't use knowledge that I could only have aquired by seeing more of the map). I kept doing that until I learned what strate
I jumped from Tough straight to Suicidal, so I don't know what Obscene and Masochistic is like. However, the AIs don't seem to be using noticeably different tactics from Intelligent to Incredible... so... My guess would be a difference in the bonuses they get (maybe even additional/improved racial abilities via extra points).
+25% miniaturization racial bonus is HUGE. I wish I could pick that for my custom race, as I don't even bother building my own military fleet before I research the first two miniaturization techs. I just don't play against the Yor in my games
I admit I only read the first few "sentences" of the OPs post, but I can agree in spirit. The thing is, all forums are like that... The moment I see a flame war starting in a thread, I just stop reading that thread.
I agree that it would be a very well recieved game feature... It did wonders for the Warhammer 40k community to share tactics...
Courage, Luck, and Soldiering are all advantages which affects your "roll" on invasions. Albeit, Courage may only affect your roll when you don't vastly outnumber your enemy, so I would put it as less valuable than 25% soldiering ability... but hey... it only costs 1 point. I personally don't choose it, but I wouldn't consider it an inneficient choice (same as +25% luck), and it usually has some tangible effect at some point in your game.
