I fully agree. Lack of possibilty to upgrade a ship when it's in a fleet is very annoying. Similar problem is with separating a fleet. I found no button at all. You can use 'U' key but button would also be useful.

I had the same problem. When you click on 'Build ship' on the bottom panel you get a window with different ships to build on the selected planet. But in this window you will find the 'old versions' of the designs the are not used in the current game, because they were changed (upgraded). There was also a problem when I wanted to build a ship and selected the later version of the design but in fact after the ship was created its parameters were as
