Its not an attempt to do a version of Dune. This is a documentary about the original Dune movie concept, the one that didn't get made. Giger worked on it, but again it did not get made. I think he did work on David Lynch's version.

I tried it a long time ago. I remember the random generator quite flawed and usually rolling well for one team.

I decided to buy. Been playing it a lot. There's a learning curve that's steep(not as steep as Crusader Kings II), but its more of a step by step learning experience. I'm 50/50 on buying this game. I've read this discussion and the reviews on steam. The main con for me is that the game is described as a lot of sitting around staring at the screen; things happen very slowly. A lot of down time for the player. Have you experienced this? Not to imply I want things to happen fast, just that I do not want to wait and wait and wait for something to happen or a reason for me to interact with the game.

If you don't mind older games Birth of the Federation is a great game, though maybe not as 'free' as what you're looking for. You still explore the galaxy and all that, but are limited to the amount of stars/minor cultures. Such as from a tiny universe to a large one or from no minor cultures to many. Its also free and player patched so it works very well. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys TBS games. Also less focus on the fighting, more on the solar system and empire
