Ditto--I was about to post this as a bug as well; the production bonus from a research center wasn't showing up. I wouldn't have complained, but it was on a +700% Precursor Library . Saving and reloading it fixed the problem, and the research center is now happily draining my treasury.

The Yor are typically behind the curve in the early game. It's not often that they get rolling, but if they do they can be an absolute nightmare--their extra racial bonuses allow them to build heavy-duty ships and make very effective use of even a few worlds. If they take out a neighbor and get any real size they can become a very serious threat. The Terran, on the other hand, are somewhat improved, but not quite there yet. Certain AIs just seem to work better, such as the Altarians

I did a little statistical checking (yes I can be obsessive that way), and as far as I can tell, the chance of any given planet being habitable ranges from about 10% (under Rare) up to roughly 30% (under Abundant). That means that, even under Abundant, there will be "dead" systems, and chances of finding more than three habitable planets in a system is slim. Personally, I agree with the original poster, in that there should be a wider range of habitability options; maybe from 10% up to 50% cha

Selective supporting of other players is key to surviving at the higher levels of difficulty. Basically, you want to help other players out just enough that they can weaken your most serious enemies. Trade routes is an easy way to do that, as is leaking technology to them. Even if another player doesn't have anything tradeable, if they're fighting my enemy I'll make sure that they have a minimum of technology, to stay alive long enough to weaken the common enemy. Just be careful with technol

To answer the original question, the economic slowdown is a normal and expected condition. At some point in the game, you'll have more construction projects underway than you have the money to pay for. The key is to be careful with money, and selective with which projects you start, to minimize the downtime. The fast way out of the economic slowdown is trade, so research to get it and build a few freighters once you do have it, which should close the gap nicely. Also, natural populat

Peace and warfare tend to come in very long waves in GalCiv2, unlike "classic" Civ (where there's less time between war and peace). The computer players are more content with peace in GalCiv2, but when war does flare up (sometimes due to a random event), it can last for quite a long time. Even if you aren't keen on peace for too long, take the time to build up your planets and starbases, as you may not get the chance later. Build your military up, or you'll become the target of choice

I think the default setting is fine; it's for brand-new players who have played few or no turn-based strategy games. "Veterans" will automatically upgrade the difficulty to something that sounds challenging.

Title says it . . . I hate restarting, but it seems like I have to restart five or six times before I get a decent start that's neither insanely hard nor way too easy. A few fixes to the galaxy and planet generator might be in order to iron out some of the problems: Starting in the corner without another system anywhere nearby. I hate this one, it's a virtually guaranteed restart. Even on Large with Common stars, I frequently start out in the corner, with the nearest system being six

I'm wondering if there's a way to make a modification to the chance of planets being habitable. Right now the "Abundant" setting is a bit misleading; habitable planets seem to be around a 30% chance on "Abundant", and it only goes downhill from there. I'd prefer a setup that's something along the lines of systems having an average of two planets and about half of planets being habitable, but it seems that the system generates lots of planets (even under "Occasional") but not enough habitable o

On #2, the scenarios, or rather the main campaign, is an interesting challenge, and quite different from what you'd find in a normal game. You spend most of the campaign fighting against an opponent with vastly superior technology, which requires a very different approach. A couple of the scenarios in particular are especially tough, and very satisfying to win. On #3, a larger galaxy and more opponents does not necessarily make for a more difficult game. The human player seems to b

I totally agree with the original poster. I'm also another former World of Warcraft player. The more I played it, the more I realized that WoW missed a huge opportunity with the Warcraft universe; the game's background would have provided the perfect opportunity to implement a world-wide conflict-oriented persistent world, but instead they went the EQ (endless questing) route. Blizzard certainly hasn't fully realized this, although they are (belatedly) working on adding world PvP ba

I played World of Warcraft quite a bit over the last two years, although I've given it up in the short term in the best interest of finding a job (generally an important thing to have!) While WoW was enjoyable to play, and well crafted (I actually appreciate the stylized artwork, although I realize not everyone does), I didn't feel that it offered enough redeeming features. While games are, for the most part, for recreation, I think that they should challenge the player in some way--either thr

Just bought this game last week, based off the GameSpot review, which was a surprisingly strong recommendation. My impression before reading the review was that Galactic Civilizations was an outgrowth of the older shareware space strategy games, and as the gap between shareware and retail has been widening considerably in recent years, I was cautios. The game has turned out to have production values certainly in line with current retail releases, but

I'm working on getting a connection to the Metaverse over an extremely convoluted network, and need some additional information on the configuration. Is the IP address the game will be accessing metaverse.galciv2.com (66.28.242.222)? Also, anyone know the port it will use? The second part is the trickiest, I need to get the router set right or I'll get lots of rejected packets.
