'That's what Windows displays if the property entry is , or the field is not present at all. ' That should read 'if the property entry is null,...' *glares at angle brackets* ~SDC~

'Go to the directory the game is installed, normally C:/Program Files/Drengin.net/galciv and RIGHT CLICK on the GALCIV EXE. Choose PROPERTIES > VERSION.' The Windows File Properties version property is not used by GalCiv. Most of the file properties are not filled in or are in err (or are various default values). The actual GalCiv version is displayed by the Drengin Game Manager or Stardock Central Client. 'When i followed your procedure I also got 1.0.0.1. I know I h

'this is where i am a little confused. why does it have to be translated or multiplied from 1024? what i mean is somewhere in the code or in a file there is a list of all the positions for all the icons, windows, and other stuff, right? then if you want to get a new resoultion you said they have to multiply all those by 1.25 and 1.3333. but why do the 1024 positions have to be multiplied? why can't the higher resolutions be pre-computed or written down somewhere in the code or in a file?' <b

The plan is that mods not approved by Stardock will not be accepted in the Multiverse, so I would have to guess that it won't (and even if it did, the mod files are all plaintext, so the limit could be circumvented by using Notepad instead of the Editor in the first place). ~SDC~

Only at the highest level does the AI get any bonuses. At lower levels, the AI is actually penalized to make up for the fact that it can do things that a human player doesn't have the time and/or inclination to do. ~SDC~

Defense modules all improve only the Starbase's defense, AFAIK. All other starbase modules affect all applicable ships/planets in the sector (or the entire galaxy, in the case of resource mining modules), including the mentioned repair module. ~SDC~

'p.s. No I cant D/L the FULL game!!!! I dont have that fast of a connection!!! I would like the game on the 26th!!!!!!' I've been downloading it just fine on a 33.6k connection. The base game is about 50 MB, 4 hours to download if you can get a good connection (took me about 6 the first time). Once that's downloaded, you can play the game while the multimedia is downloading (that's the long one: 350 MB, roughly 28 hours on a 33.6kbaud line). In either case, the SDC an

Reset List on the discussion tab should wipe out the damaged forum entries and redownload them. This may also be necessary when new forums are added (that, in fact, seems to be what happened here: adding the GC Strategies forum stopped the GalCiv Forum from updating). ~SDC~

Í did something like that in the early beta to get it from my pathetic internet-connected computer to the not-quite-so-pathetic half-assembled computer on my floor during the early betas. The 'installation' is mostly just decompressing the downloaded files. If the computer it's trasferred to gets internet access, the SDC won't recognize that it's installed, though and may make you redownload it the first time. ~SDC~

The League of Non-Aligned Worlds appears very frequently, but only systems that would defect to other races normally would join the I-League. It's the default 'rebel alliance' type organization, so to speak, although full scale civil wars and empire breakdowns are quite possible. ~SDC~

'If the version you're running is the latest Beta, you should keep in mind that it's about 4 months old. It lacks alot of the polish that would differentiate a "light" game from a "full" game.' If I were asked then, I would have said the game was a 'full' game as early as beta2. From my point of view, we're already playing with v. 3.0 or so. :p If this is only 1.0, I'm not sure I want to see what 2.0 is going to be line. I suspect I'll be wondering where all my free time i

'Nakor Wrote: "If something is unclear about the above, please be very specific in your followups." Wow, jump through hoops for sure! What you fail to say is if SDC needs to be "online" (i.e. connected) when all this occurs.' The SDC needs to be online only while downloading, reading/replying to message board posts, or using the internal IRC chat client. All of it's other functions will work at any time (although you will get a few warning dialogs if you

'but a 500 turn game with 500 saves does seem to suggest a bit of "This game will blow the hell out of averages because every turn was PERFECT". Eliminates the influence of luck. ' It also take a long time to save and load a game 500 times, and the Metaverse score is (IIRC) a weighted average; players that play more often will have a slightly higher score that would already offset the save 'cheater's inflated score.

Frogboy, Are you saying it is like DLing a Patch? (i.e. GalCiv 1.01 form version 1.00) Whatever the case, can the file that will contain the Bonus Pack be burned to a CD? Yes and no. It is basically a patch, but there isn't a 'installer' or anything specific to copy, just updated copies of the new files that get added directly to the game. The whole GalCiv directory can be copied to CD, and moved that way without problems.

The base game will take about 6 hours to download on a 33.6kbaud connection. That's all that's needed to actually play the game, and it's perfectly possible to run the game while the multimedia is downloading (approx. 48 hours), presuming you computer can handle having GalCiv, the DGM/SDC client, and your commention software (if applicable) running simultaneously. The DGM and SDC clients both support file resuming, if that becomes an issue.

For a report from the bottom-of-the-line, I'm running GalCiv on a Pentium MMX 200MHz with 86MB RAM and I rarely see slowdowns other than loading of one of the one-time animations, like the 'first' binks or the tech animations. Performance, of course, will be better on higher-end systems under extreme circumstances. I expect that if I got a game going that ended up in a huge war in a deadlock, there'd be some slowdown updating 2000+ ships and several hundred colonies, at least on my sys

For mIRC 6.0 users, irc://irc.stardock.com/#galciv at an address bar or command line should get you there. (Users of other clients or versions of mIRC will have to enter it manually, but the info is there.)

Considering that the original developer of Birth of the Federation (Microprose) no longer exists, it's parent company (Hasbro Interactive) no longer exists, and the current copyright holder (Infogrames) doesn't seem to acknowledge BotF, I'd say it's pretty much dead. Not to mention the fact that the Star Trek franchise is now exclusively licensed.

'It looks quite interesting, I just wish the star map was a little bigger (or had the option to view it that way) like in the MOO series.' As far as this goes, there's a button on the planet list, and a hotkey that's always available, to switch the main screen with a tactical display (which is a magnified copy of the minimap).
