'2.) I know there are events, but are there news events? Specifically will I have to check every turn to see if the A.I.s are at war with a major or minor race or will there be some news event which says, so&so has just declared war on so&so? Or has just conquered the(insert name) empire/race? Thanks.' These don't come by way of the normal news system, but you do get occasional reports on the activity of other races, and the yearly reports also occasionally mention things of that nature

It's not as big of a problem in GalCiv for three reasons: patrolling empty space is alot more difficult than patrolling a land border (read: near impossible), supply chains are meaningless when you consider that you're dealing with things on a scale of groups of individually self-sufficent planets, and because communications are difficult if not impossible, to cut off when you have a means of communication that propigates at superluminous speeds (sevral techs early in the tech tree create and/o
' I NEVER played single player in turn based games' I'd like to know how you manage to finish TBS games in multiplayer.... Stars! works, but only because you don't have to stay connected to the host. The fastest one I've seen was Birth of the Federation, and even it was too long to play out (unless you're really unlucky and the galaxy gets invaded by the Borg very early on, but I don't like winning by Deus ex Machina). Heroes of Might and Magic *fill-in-the-blank* can
'If so, what happened to other 70-odd billion people Earth is projected to have at the end of the 22nd century?' Several things: The population reported in GalCiv is not the colony population but the taxpayer/military population. People unable to pay taxes or serve in the military are assumed to still be there, but to be relatively unimportant at the imperial scale. You start the game with a colony ship with 100M on it.
'I hate having games in my native language (swedish) I prefere english versions... The ones making the translation always manage to make it sound... dorky.. ' One good thing about the way GalCiv is set up is that if you don't like how Strategy First translated the game, you can always retranslate it yourself and submit it to the Library.
I haven't heard of any attempts at running GalCiv under WINE, but if MoO3 really is runnable under WINE, then GalCiv probably is too, and in that case it may be runnable under OSX as well.
'Anyone care to give a short comparison between GalCiv and MOO2 (forget MOO3) or Starfleet Command.' Birth of the Federation would be the appropriate comparison (Starfleet Command is a tactical combat simulator), and even then it's still more of an apples vs. oranges comparison.
'Off topic, but voices in Alpha Centauri are not french, at least Zakharov's voice belongs to a russian, and Chairman Sheng-Ji to a chinese. I thought it was great, the whole design in SMAC is amazing' The foreign language versions of SMAC/AX had voiceovers in those languages (at least in some markets). Only the Engligh language version's VAs were particularly good.
If you're careful, anything is viable, but expect it to be more difficult. +60% is a big improvement when Star Federation first shows up.
'Hmm...diplomacy techs I believe you're saying that either that race has not discovered a hight enough diplomacy tech to know how to talk to a different race correctly, or that my diplomacy techs aren't high enough to accurately translate what they're saying. Maybe I'm way off, but it's a good guess I think.' As was mentioned earlier, races that are more warlike or otherwise less-than-friendly (the Yor, for one, want to destroy organic life...they're probably not going to be in
'Well... I'm not sure I'd use credit card on the Internet so I'm looking at other alternatives. Frog, do you know if the CDs will get in shops on 26? Or can we pay per check? Which one is faster and how much time it'll take?' They do accept check or money order, from what I recall, but I don't know where the order form page was. And incidentally, there's actually more security involved in using a credit card online than there is at an ATM or a brick-and-mortar store. People ju
Amusing idea, but I can't afford $40 for a box. ;p
'How many more techs do I go before I win by a reasearch victory, if that's possible...' A tech win is accomplished by running out of techs to research.
'There is no such thing as one empire ruling the others for ever. The Romans tried and finally failed.' Yes, Rome failed to conquer the world. But keep in mind that there are nations around now that cover as much, if not more, territory than the Holy Roman Empire did. As much of the problem may have been how it happened, than that it didn't happen.
'Then why not put in msg that says .. in effect they'll accept this ridiculous offer but you are cheating... otherwise folks might not know, yah right.' Because of the reason it would break other things. It's caused by a value overflow, and it's very difficult, at best, to simply throw a check in there to catch it. The easiest way to fix it would be to make it impossible to happen, and the easiest ways to do that are to make planets impossible to trade and limit durations on t
'That makes sense, I guess I was mislead by the statement that my Diplomat makes when first requesting part of a trade that says, "Even though you could crush us like a bug..." I thought they meant that in a military sense. I didn't realize they meant that they could Negotiate me like a bug' Most of the messages on the diplomacy screen are purely governed by your Diplomacy rating, but that one specifically is related to your military power. Measured by fleet strength, I think, which do
'What kind of human population are we looking at? I don't see birth rates being able to produce hundreds of billions of humans in such a short period of time.' Well, in the game Earth is, on average, a class 19 planet, and it can support around 60 billion once all the morale improvements are in place. In reality Gaia is already running into problems supporting 7 billion, so we're on a nearly 10/1 scale as far as that goes. Planets can start as high as class 26, terriformed to
'Once you trade a good to a Race, can that Race then trade it to another?' No. Only the race that originally built a trade good can trade it.
'Do the different AI setting merely affect the bonuses that the races receive at the start, or does it actually make them smarter.' Some of both. The AI's 'intelligence' changes on most of the settings, and on many of them their starting resources change too.
'Hmm.. I have tried for quite sometime to find something that can adjust the gamma setting in Windows.. but without success, anyone knows of any program that can do this?' I don't have a like to it right now, but try Googling "Power Strip." That's the tool I use now for manual color recalibration.
'Another note, others have mentioned it too - shouldn't we be able to capture trade goods and wonders? Also, only a few trade goods/wonders get galaxy-wide announcements when they are completed.' From what I've seen, all wonders and achievements do, and no trade goods do.
'I fixed it in my own tech and stars files' There's lots of odd spellings in the stars.lst. Most of them are archaic spellings that are otherwise correct (Polydukes--Polydeuces, Gwennifar -- Gwennevar -- Guenevere), but a few others are misspellings (Alderan -- Alderaan). (Examples pulled from memory, stars.lst form first, modern/correct form last.) Duplicate entries may be worth removing too (Polydukes/Polydeuces == Pollux), as would alternate names for Sol, Earth (I know Ga
'Look at it from another point of view, those of us who have been working 12 hours+ per day for the past 40 days straight in order to get the *current features* to work perfectly aren't likely to have additional time to put in a feature that no one has requested until the last couple weeks before gold.' Well, it would have been useful for me too. I didn't request it because, in my case, it's a matter of 'monitor no want to work' rather than a problem with the game's colors, and I have
'6) I couldn't ask the Torians to attack the Altarians. All the other AIs were listed as possible targets, but not the Altarians. The Torians weren't at war with the Altarians, but I knew they wanted to be due to earlier messages from the Arceans and Torians which suggested a concerted effort against the Altarians.' They may not actually have found the Altarians. If that's the case, they can't go to war with them, even if other AI or the player has gotten them involved in something els
The advantage setting in the prefs.ini doesn't do anything anymore. It used to change the number of points you had to use during game setup to determine your abilities, but was hardcoded to 10 (the old 'Cakewalk' setting) a bew betas ago.
