'Why bother, U think, coz Ships are expensive in building and maintenance. Also, if there's a proper system defense, U don't bind ur fleets onto ur systems just for defense reasons.' Defenders, Constructors, and Scout Ships all have zero matainance and are affected by a Star Base's attack and defence improvements, and by system defences' def improvement, and all but the constructor are affected by your Weapons ability. All but the Defender's have at least 50 HP. Fleets in orbi

The SE file Cari linked to several days ago, which seems to be the same version, does not catch any crashes on my 98SE system.
'I thought the only difference was that minor races cound'nt win.' The difference between major and minor civs iss that majors start with the two ships and 1000bc that you get, and minors do not. They may also be unable able to win, but that shouldn't ever be a consideration anyway, simply because of the head start the six major races have.
On Win9x, that file would be in $Windir$/Temp/drengin/gc1 somewhere.
If you ordered directly from Stardock, you would have recieved the downloadable version either way. You have the option of also recieving a CD when the game goes gold for a minimal charge (presumably mainly to cover shipping costs).
'I didn't get that number with my original email. :/ ' You should have recieved two emails from Stardock. The first has your order confirmation, and the second has you serial number and a link to the current DGM installer.
'What's going on. I started up the Drengin Net Manager, but it doesn't show any updates for GalCiv. What am I doing wrong here? It gives me the option to uninstall or play, but but "upgrade" isn't a highlighted option. What gives? Thanks.' The most likely cause is that you couldn't get a connection to the DGM server for any of a number of reasons. The DGM should start, even if you don't get a connection, so you can uninstall or play games that have already been downloaded, but
'I really think the DGM will fail if run on OS/2.' It would. That's no doubt about that whatsoever. Which is why my specific method there. 'A compressed raw format disk writer and an OS/2 disc image would work prefectly. 'Playing' the game would write the image to disc, so it could installed on the OS/2 system.' Downloading and 'installing' the game would consist of downloading an image of the GC/2 disc and a raw-mode disc writing program. When you 'play' the g
Indeed. I'm on a P-200 MMX. At one point, I had a Gameboy on my desk at all time so that I'd have something to do waiting for the end of turn processing to finish.
'It's a big number of files that are downloaded and decompressed..but on the other hand, doesnt the new resume feature in DGM work?' It does, with conditions. Rebooting messes it up, even if the files are still there, and Drengin.net is still going to give up eventually if it can't reconnect. I can't keep a connection open long enough because I'm not here long enough to reconnect. I can't afford to sit at my computer for 36 hours trying to download Gal Civ.
'The size of the download is going to be huge. I'm quite ocncerned about the size actually.' Any chance of splitting it up into more than three files, so that those of us on dial-up don't run into too many problems. It's been a while since I've been able to keep a line open for 12 hours, and a fresh install of GalCiv base is already up to 7 hours, or so, download here.
The 'install' process, as the DGM handles it now, seems to be just uncompressing files and creating a link in the start menu. A compressed raw format disk writer and an OS/2 disc image would work prefectly. 'Playing' the game would write the image to disc, so it could installed on the OS/2 system.
Actually, Brad was the one that said that the 500HP was too high, IIRC, and I'd have to agree. The real problem is that 90% of the starbase functionality is unimplimented in the current beta, and I'd have to guess that some of it will still be missing in beta 3.
I'll have to check, but IIRC, HoMM3's sleep used up the rest of the turn's movement, them bypassed in future turns until woken. I don't recall anything of the sort in the earlier Heroes games.
'There are options like this in other games that work very well in the situations I'm describing. For instance, the Heros of Might and Magic series has this kind of button.' Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this implimentation exactly what you said you don't want? That is, cycling through the heroes repeadedly until you force it to assume all of the moves have been used up?...
The bug will only occur if the two ships are at the same location, AFAIK. I have never seen it occure in any other case. As for improving systems, it doesn't matter where the starbase is. Every module currently implemented affects every relevent object in the current sector, and in the case of Manufacturing the four adjacent sectors as well.
As far as I know, there is no limit. I've had 32 transports aquired from an AI to keep a minor race I was trading with from being invaded in a single space before without problems.
It has been implemented in the Metaverse, but not in GalCiv itself, IIRC. That, if I had to guess, will probably happen once most of the rest of the game is feature complete, so that the AI isn't trying to use tactics that are unusable due to altered or recently added features.
'Is there any benefit to Drengin Network aside from getting access to the other Stardock games? If I am only interested in GalCiv (both retail and beta) is there any reason at all why I would want to spend more on getting Drengin Net?' Except for the possability of GalCiv 2 being a seperate game rather than GC v2.0, not really. Purchase of GalCiv alone will still get you GalCiv and all updates for a one year duration after it's GM release. (Idle note, though: Drengin.net subscription
All of these bugs have been reported before, although one of them is a different method of causing it (the negitive movement bug, in this case). Most of your suggestions aren't new either, but a few are. In the case of the resolution changing, that's probably not goint to be until after GalCiv 1.0 is released. It was mentioned a while ago that too much was designed specifically for that resolution to change it without redoing most of the artwork and interface. I'll comment sp

'I have found that the tech tree is too big or some items take too long to reserch, or the reserch speed is too slow.' Some techs are artifically inflated because the code for them is not in. Also, some of those techs will add ways to further increase your research rate once they are implimented (Artifical Planets/Stellar Creation, perhaps). Starbases may also get research modules in the upcoming build. 'Also if you do reserch Galactic peace or domination it does'nt finish th
*comment on first two quotes out of order intentionally, for sake of logic flow* 'Very minor nitpicking, but if I can accept the very unlikely event that every country on earth decide to join a planetary governement from now to 2171, I find it rather incredible that they would choose to prefix their spaceships'name with the prefix used by the american navy... '(1) Should victory conditions be optional? I am personally wary of this precisely because I tend to turn off victory conditions i"m not good at which I think takes a lot of the challenge out of the game.' My main problem with things like this is that some victory conditions in games that aren't simple conquest are impossible to stop, except by doing it first yourself, and I don't like situations like that. The most common offenders here are economic or technological victories.
'SpaceRift that sweeps through a sector making ships disappear. Tech added to understand spacial rifts. Once researched can go to sector with a survey ship and recover all ships lost.' Seems to me that the existing _*D_Phasing techs and their branches already cover that last part.
