I hope they take Nova's point seriously as well. I don't want them to completely eliminate the possibility of a Trojan Horse gambit but they need to teach the AI how to manage expenses better.

On a single site, that's not really a kludge. Putting every site on the same database... that's kind of crazy for something as big as TGN. I hope the crazy DA subject lines settle down.
Thank you, Evil. Nova, that was out of context even by my most evil standards. What I meant in saying that Gallagher has a point is in regards to it going to beta early. I'm definitely not in favor of "professional beta testing" for a game. He has a different take on how software should be developed. He was attacked for it. His position works well in just about every other category. It doesn't work in games. Giving Gallagher a break does not equate to agreeing with him.<b
I agree. But if you felt that way (and I'm not doubting you did), why was I the first to mention it? November 17, 2006 11:28:06 DA was still being released when I registered the complaint. "Evil always triumphs over good because good is dumb."--Dark Helmet
And to hear Wheel of all people make that suggestion. why is that surprising? I pound people when they are idiots. I didn't find Gallagher to be worthy of a new one. You don't need to go very far to find me giving out punishment. Being evil gets more respect. I haven't changed my position there. <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="
I did give you a thoughtful reply. Obviously, you're an illiterate fraktard. I looked over your Metaverse record before writing that last post. 10 years per game? All good on every game? If you're "good" then you have no respect for the AI because you're not playing at a difficulty level that would require a bit of respect for the AI. Without any concern for your opponents, there's no need for strategy. Why take the 48% research bonus for killing everyone in underwater d
Gallagher has a point, Marc. It does seem a bit premature to go to public beta. Beta comes when it's time to iron out the complete game. Your statement about this being a release candidate is a little hollow. Release candidate comes after beta testing is complete. What Stardock _is_ doing is something completely different. They are allowing players to participate in _alpha_ testing and nudge the developers' path in designing the expansion rather than merely testing the expansion.
I borrowed the computer Bill Gates taxes are worked on. It now keeps track of people I need to kill. I'm glad to be on the list. you dont judge success on how much money you didn't make. <
Change gender?! We'll support you no matter what, Marc.
Given that many of the people I see screaming about "bugs" can't even write a 3 paragraph post without spelling and formatting errors, it makes me wonder if they are even aware of what software development involves. Is it even possible to expand on this point? <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmidd
Who is "dissing" Stardock? Me? Why don't you review my posts before putting your foot in your mouth? Seriously, click my name and choose the appropriate option. I'm not upset about anything. Do you know how to read? Discussing an exploit that might not even be an exploit is a valid discussion. Brad, no doubt, is stressed out but it's not from the content of this thread. It's from the DA beta testing. Go make yourself useful and log a Metaverse game above beginner. Once
the main reasoning behind their logic is the almighty dollar. To them, the bottom line is if you paid for it, it should work, period. Nothing whatsoever to do with complexity of design or different hardware set-ups came into play, just the basic consumer driven mindset. I think PC strategy and online players want things to work out of the box as
Evil, I am a professional code monkey. I build web applications. They are nowhere near the complexity of Dread Lords or any other strategy game. I can produce bulletproof software in a specific timeframe. I don't expect something like Dread Lords to be bulletproof. I enjoy tactical squad strategy--either turn based or "real time with pause." Every game X-Com (UFO and Apocalypse), Star Trek Away Team and Silent Storm have broken my heart because the developers or publishers
Final thought: Stardock creates the event file in a way that third party programmers can parse into, say, a flash application. Fields preceding each part of the log can say DATE, EVENT, DESCRIPTION with optional fields like SCREENSHOT. Let the fans handle the story telling application. It can't be xml or it won't be efficiently read by humans.
Think about the power of a tool that can tie together screenshots, data, narrative, and glorious battle scenes into an unfolding saga. It's beyond the scope of Dark Avatar and a February release to work in the full EG, but by implementing some rudimentary AI that captures certain key moments, that takes note of new innovations in starship design, and logs the essentials (p
To be honest, it's a gimmick and not really needed. The original concept was definitely a gimmick but the event logging and appending can be _extremely_ useful to any player that would like to review their game. Stardock would be modifying and expanding what they already do with debug.err.
Ugh... edit isn't working. Anyway, ditto the log appending button for victory/defeat screens and any other place where an event occurs. Players that don't care won't be bothered. Players that do care can take an extra moment to write a sentence or two about what they are doing.
On events, the choice made. As I am 100% evil, I'll never have to guess what option I chose but logging "evil, underwater domes emptied, 48% research bonus" would help. Logging ship design would make the description section useful again. Many players eliminate all custom ships after each game so they can describe exactly why they designed a specific ship and have that appended to the log. Come to think of it... let the players append the logs before and after each event. Jus
Jason O'Campy didn't play the game.
I already tore him a new one. Marcathonas backed me up after his passive-aggressive "are you done" response. He's pwned in this thread. Support Metaverse Scenarios
Edit isn't working. Just wanted to append this line to my post: I second the event logging idea from Evil Muppet. That would help writers tremendously and spare the development team from further resource expenditure.
I vote for cut. I want the AI to scare me. I don't want to read an epic used by weak players to prop up their egos. I want stronger starbases. I want starbases and capital ships to target multiple ships per turn. I want to invade starbases. I want to research different technologies on different planets the way I can produce different ships on different planets. I want to play the scenarios that came with DL and post the scores to the Metaverse. Anyone who is truly
I don't mod. I will get DA when it's released. Turning off fundamental options is silly. However, allowing customers to edit the xml file sounds fair. Keep in mind, however, that Stardock controls the Metaverse. If you don't want to play their game, you don't get to post DA scores. Given the additional features, DA players will score more points per Metaverse game than DL players. Some people don't care about the Metaverse but, in this little forum, the medals are
I haven't decided if I'm going to attempt it. My current game has two opponents left. Equal military power all around is keeping the peace. I'm shooting for alliance with one and destruction of the other. Giving them a large ship wouldn't really work in my favor. Keeping the large ships goes toward my final score.
Just double checked. It's 1.4.61. I confused 53 and 61. Is there a changelog on that? On a related issue (extending the life of Dread Lords), can you please check the following thread: Metaverse Scenarios .
