OK, this is just an idea so don't jump all over me, it seems wincustomize is big enough and has enough people posting that it might be a good idea to sort the message board into different categories instead of having just one big lump? Maybe have a section for skinning help, a section for general chat, technical difficulties..... whatever, you get the idea, it just seems it would make sense so whatever. again just a thought. Peace ~Capn

it looks like its still in alpha....... and some of the new elements are not compatible with old skins... like the new playlist thing, so you've got the rest of the thing skinned, but the playlist and one or two other new elements are still that ugly standard skin. Very cool though, XMMS is still better ~capn

next time someone tells you windowblinds sucks, respond with the witty reply "YOU suck!" Then punch them in the head. With most of the skins, windowblinds takes up a very very small bit of memory, if you want to check it, depending on ure OS (win 2k or xp) you can go into the task manager and look at the processes and it will tell you how much its taking up... show them that, then laugh at their ignorance, then punch them in the head again <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/sm

I'm not an admin, so the best I can do is guess, I think there is some problem with the algortihm they use to convert the preview jpgs to thumbnails... I had the same problem with a wall I just submitted... who knows, could be someone spilled some chocolate milk on a server or something, just a guess. ~Capn

Ted Kekatos has created System Administrator Appreciation Day, a time to honor the people whom neither rain, nor snow, nor bizarre "illegal operation" errors can keep from fixing your machine Kekatos, a droll system administrator in Chicago, was inspired to create the special day by a Hewlett-Packard ad he saw a few years ago. In the ad, a system administrator is bombarded with presents from employees as thanks for installing new printers. "I tore that ad out and showed it to

Granted, but keep in mind that this is also an invasion of privacy. Also, those with money don't keep it forever, especially when they do something illegal (ENRON!) so while corporate America is very formidable, its not invincible and they can't get away with whatever they want. And it only a matter of time that someone exploits their newly legal hacking ability for corporate gain.

This is NOT the way to go about solving the problem. P2P is just a way to get the files... if P2P eventually fades out of existence it will only be a matter of time before someone comes out with a new way of obtaining pirated software, movies, music, or what have you. Granted piracy is very wrong, but I think there has to be a better way to solve this problem than just deleting stuff on a pirates computer. Like the article said, what if someone has a home video named snow white, and it gets d

mandrake 8.2 has been out for a while, and redhat 7.3 just came out...... personally, i absolutely cannot wait for the new gnome release... i''ve never been a big fan of kde, always liked gnome better.... gnome + sawfish = happy capn Sawfish is the default window manager for gnome and it really does perform very well in terms of skinning capability.

question for you: I'm entering my freshman year of college next year at university of Illinois, majoring in computer science, and AI is one of the things that I've always been wicked interested in.... even though I know absolutely nothing about it... any advice? I would greatly appreciate it. e-mail me if you would like: [email protected] thanks a ton ~Capn

hear hear on the matrix..... I've been waiting for that one. As for star wars, it has completely lost its path..... with the first three that came out, we followed luke on his journey to heroism. This was more like a king arthur story than the ones that are coming out now. The scenes jump around too much from time period to time period and we don't get to see any of the hero's journey..... because after all, that is what all great movies and literature are based on... even lotr and the matrix

I got bored one day and decided to see what was out there in terms of different window managers (for linux) and i came across this site: http://www.3dwm.org Well naturally I was curious as to how a three dimensional approach to managing sessions would look. I must say I was quite disappointed. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, as the concept is kind of wierd, but I can assure you that the screenshots I saw on this site were nothing short of depressing. Quite frankly, i don't want t

btw..... just in case you don't know what a paging file is, here's how you can change it: go into control panel then go to system, then go to advanced, then (this is where its different on the different versions of windows) since I'm on win2k here at work, there is a button under the advanced tab that says performance, click that and you should see something about either virtual memory or paging file, just make it bigger. This file acts as an overflow buffer when your RAM gets too full

I had a similar problem when I used custom logons... how fast is your computer and how much RAM do you have? I have a 500 mhz with 128 megs and I'm pretty sure that the cutom logons (the ones i used had 1024x768 bitmap images) as opposed to just a nifty little gradient (which is the default). I'm not 100% sure, but the huge bitmaps could be a strain on the resources, especially since windows has not so good management of the RAM and their paging file. But like i said, I'm not 100% positive th

Yes I know it does... that's why i said I'd need the authors permission, it would be somewhat hypocritical (spelling?) of me to explain my anti-pirating viewpoint and then talk about stealing someone's theme and putting it on linux....... ~Capn

Thank you pjpowell, cost is a big factor. As for you youthsmooth, yes, there are some programs for linux that cost money, these are closed source programs that just happen to run on the linux operating system. However, the majority of programs for linux are free, as is linux itself. You can buy it in a store prepacked for like 35 bucks or so, or you can download it from the web (if you feel like downloading about 1.5 gigs) I Highly reccomend mandrake to windows users. http://www.mandrake.com

Now hold on just a durned minute youthsmooth... did you say gimp was a fake? I really don't want to get mad at you for being ignorant and stubborn, but dude, gimp is a great program that is FREE, and if you are using photoshop, flash, fireworks, paintshop, any of those, without registering them then you are a THIEF. Many people put in hard hours into coding those programs.... they don't just exist. And to keep those programs being updated and continuing to produce new versions, they rely on p

Well i went over and looked at deviantart today, i thought i had been there before, but maybe not, or if i had i must have completely missed the unix/linux section. Anyway, its sweet, and i guess instead of complaining about the lack of skins i should just make some nifty ones of my own. And about kde and gnome..... competition is what fuels progress... competition in the linux community is a GOOD thing ~Capn

One last thing...... one may assume from my last e-mail that I'm very anti-windows. Just wanted to clarify that I'm not, windows has its strong points, and Mr. Gates.... though evil.... has done an EXCELLENT job with XP, and 98 too was even pretty nice. In all these long winded and pointless posts, i'm just trying to say quite simply it would be nice to have a decent skin site for linux. Who cares if its not mainstream? There are still millions of people who use it and I'm sure all of them a

In regards to photoshop and flash running on linux....... WINE is great, and i know several people who have gotten photoshop working under linux, it just takes patience. I agree that at this point there is very little chance of linux going mainstream. The main reason is that its not hard to install, its hard to CONFIGURE. This is because linux is mainly aimed at people who know how to use computers (not just click pretty little icons). Setting up programs still requires lots of command line
