I was using Coolmon for a bit, but have now switched over to Sysmetrix (actually trying to make some of my own skins for it...yikes!). I'm a big fan of Trillian...don't need all the "extras" of the other software, which I quite happily uninstalled when I got Trillian. Just goes to show ya, one person's drink is another's poison. <A HREF="https://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?Cmd=full

...and speaking of alien races declaring war...the last three games I played, no one declared war on me. But there are a million different ways to play, with a million different combinations of setups (different intelligence levels, different alignments, etc). --Mark

I was going back through some of the older news items on the home page, and saw something that I must have ignored before. Screenshots from Beta 2, which is the beta version I've been playing...and these screenshots look nothing like what I've seen. Are these from "cutscenes"? I did install the "multimedia" stuff (I just double-checked to make sure), so am I doing something wrong that I've not seen any of these scenes? --Mark

This may have been addressed already, but I was looking thru my DATA directory, and noticed something strange...some files were .ANOMALY, and some were .ANOMOLY .....some with A, some with O. What's the difference? If I want to create new anomalies, which extension should I use? --Mark

I'm thinking of more questions...what about visibility? Will it be unseen until it attacks a ship? That would go well with the idea that the other races don't already know where to avoid them...it would also help to level the playing field a bit. It sort of makes me think of early exploration, back in Magellan and Vespucci's day. These guys set sail on treacherous waters, while many people around them filled their heads with legends of terrible sea creatures, serpents and sirens. It

Right...like, once your race has advanced to that point where they can deal with it, can you go out and "hunt it down", to make that sector safe? Also, and maybe this is a stupid question, but is the monster going to be tied to morale at all? As in, will you get any sort of bonus (to morale or whatever) for killing it? How will it react to populated planets in that sector? Just doing some out-loud thinking. --Mark

No, I think Wyrenn was referring to the morality of the alien race, not humanity. I've noticed that, too...I'll set the Altarians on "good", and some time into the game they'll show up as "demonic" morality. --Mark

My two cents, I'm VERY glad I bought GalCiv when I did. I've only been in on it for the last two "revisions" to the beta, but the developers are really listening to the users...I've seen several suggestions from these forums eventually implemented into the game (like some of the UP issues). I wish more software companies would follow this model on some of their products. :)

I could be misunderstanding, but I don't think that's it. I've seen it before too, on other graphs besides tech. And it goes "flatline" for all the races, not just Humanity...so at some point in the game, you go to look at that graph, and there's just a single flat line at the bottom.

I think Brad's best point seems to have been ignored...these are two completely different games, and I think we'd all like to keep them that way. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, a big draw to this game is simply the fact that it's SO different from other games out there. I like the fact that it isn't so tactically-oriented...if I wanted that, I'd buy a different game (MOO or whatever). I'll stop before I get too comfortable on my soapbox. :)

Maybe I'm missing a point here...but I seem to remember seeing in the documentation somewhere that the colony and transport ships weren't individual ships, but actually a fleet of ships, represented by one "icon", if you will. With that in mind, it seems reasonable to have NO limit on the number of people you can load onto one...however, common sense would dictate an increase in price for larger troop loads. For example, a colony "ship" (actually fleet) to carry 100 billion should cost more th

And what about Big Brother? The evil mastermind who lives inside me wonders about technologies to control the people's will...could this also decrease the possibility of revolt? Naturally, this type of leadership would have to use tools like Steevo mentioned...secret police and such goodies.
