Errrr, no one told me there was a secret switch to slow the tech down, thanks guys for letting me in on it.
Spitfire_69
I find in most games by the time the action starts everybody owns all the techs and its just blackhole weopons against blackhole weopons, the rest of the tech tree merely being rungs on the ladder to the inevatablre blackhole tech. Maybe if the techs where shared out among the race's at the start of game so that most techs where locked of to you. The only way to gain these techs then would be to steal or exchange, same with all other race's, I think then maybe the mid and lower techs woul
I totally agree, but there are exceptions. Take our little computer gang, we all now own legal copies of GalCiv2, but there is one of us that GalCiv2 is "as far as we know" the one and only legal copy he owns. He even brought it down the pub to prove his ownership to us. I would like to say what class packaging GalCiv2 comes in, I know its the game that counts, but still 10/10 for packaging. Give people a game with a un-crackable CP, and they will all endeavour to have it cracked
Funny really, it could just be that in this case the pirate industry gave Stardock the best advertisement going and a good leg-up as far as sales go. I did notice on some not so legally binding sites that the message was ' This game has no copy protection and is well worth the asking price so go out and buy it' ( strange world we live in) I don't know about you but I immediately hate a company that pushes a game with the likes of SF copy protection, because they are sending out the
I mean which would you prefer a game that you cant resell or.........wait for it.........................Starforce? If Gal Civ 2 had come with Star****, I wouldn’t have touched it with a barge pole. Make's me wonder how many more people wouldn’t have bought Gal Civ 2 if it had come with the dreaded SF.
Even with all the crash problems I've had with the game I still love the guys and gals at Stardock with all my heart and I want to have their beta's. Big kissy kissy X
When I dropped the auto recover lower than 100 meg it starts crashing again. Keeping it at 200 meg I have had 2 solid days of game play on gigantic map with all races and tons of jewellery covered ships and no crash.
The link to a free version of CachemanXP in is post #7 All day without a crash......wonderful
Thanks Mistoffeles, Ill knock it down to 4096. Hope this helps others with similar problems to get playing again. I know how it feels not to be able to play, it feels like getting caught in a pig poo downpour with your wellys stuck in the mud (not nice).
Cacheman is a splendid little utility that has been going since the ark right up to the present day with CachemanXP. Basically it manages your memory, releasing unused or forgotten memory when you are running low, in my case I have it set at 200meg where as the default was only 30 meg and didn’t cure my crashing. I raised the recovery limit to 200 meg after reading somewhere on this forum that saving a game can eat up 100 meg of memory. Cacheman reads your memory every 3 seconds hopef
This is what’s puzzling, I have a 6 gig page file (permanent), 2 gigs of memory (tested) and a ultra clean unfragged drive, but had game crash's only with Gal Civ 2 no other game. Anyway all day play and no crash yet, so one of the things I done, fixed it.
At last my CTD is cured....this is how I struck lucky I changed 2 things, not sure wich has fixed it, but I have been playing all morning without a crash, where as before I was getting them every other move. 1 I dropped the background star density to 500 ( looks better anyway ) 2 Installed cachemanXP and set "auto recover if ram goes below 200 mb" and "cpu theshold at 35%" That was it and it plays fine now with not a hint of crashing or slowdown. Im so happy

Sorry, disregard this post. Just read the section in 'Everything' normally only shuffle though 'game talk' and 'support and bugs'. Yes, Stupid, with a capital 'Q'
The answer to this question is what probably has the devs working feverishly round the clock to solve. There are some real nasty crash bugs in there somewhere, the trick is finding where. I think it's kind of weird how most are playing it crash free and others with stable computers are suffering constant crashing. I suppose it's a case of today’s technology zooming ahead of the industry’s programmers (no chance of keeping up ) We can only hope they find the offending lines of code soon.
Thank you mr hollow man. You watch bet they go and fix it tomorrow.
There is no way I can progress with 1.1 with CTD every other move, so I want to go back to patch 1.0x which seems to be stable, It could be like 10 or maybe 12 years before this problems fixed and I just couldent wait that long, Im going though cold turkey with this game as it is. So, Mr & Mrs Dev, could you please make it available for download, I need to play now or I don't know what may happen, Im not in control anymore.
I really think most of these crash's are not hardware related as I am getting constant crash's with Gal Civ 2 but my Civ 4 and X3 and other game's have never encounterd any problems. Could it have something to do with playing with only custom built ships, as I never use the of-the-peg ships that come with the game. I don't know, my head hurts so much I think it's going to fall off.
Wish Frogboy would let us know if they are any closer to finding the root of the problem, this waiting is painfull, I was so into my game.

Spoke to soon, I’m now at the stage where the game crash's every 3 move's. Time to shelve this game until a fix is found I think. I’m just wasting my time here. BTW, all my other games run flawlessly, all very heavy on the system.
Still AMD and Nvidia. Is it because the whole world and his squashwash has a AMD cpu and a Nvidia graphic card/motherboard or is there a message here? I upgraded my forceware from 81.98 drivers to the beta 84.43 and managed to get past the event crash but 4 or 5 turns later it crashed. 81.98 crashed within 20 turns 84.43 I can get 40/50 turns before crash, probably means nothing.
We seem to have AMD plus NVIDIA in common up to now but no specific model. What type of nforce board do you both have.
There are quite a few of us having constant game crash's, so it maybe a good idea to see if it's a hardware issue that we share. If you have any of the same hardware as me and are getting constant crashing especially later on in a game please post here what similar hardware you own. AMD64 3200+ NVIDIA Nforce 4 SLi motherboard NVIDIA 7800 GT graphics card RealTek onboard sound 2 Gig onboard memory
The eradication of the many bugs contained in 1.1 would make a fantastic 1.2, and me a happy Darlek.
