One important thing to consider is that DRM is the name for a type of program, not a specific program in itself. Hence you get different levels of DRM. EAs DRM (Spore, Mass Effect etc) is the sworn enemy of many gaming aficionados, while Steam's DRM isn't so intrusive. Stardock games don't have any, although they do check serials if you want to update the game (so only legitimate copies can get patches).
That was the guy that helped make that shit game called Spore?
Language... He was drafted in to improve parts of Spore. Its not that bad (DRM notwithstanding), its just that people were expecting it to be the best game ever, which it isn't. Soren is one of the great unsung heroes of computer games. 'Sid Meier's Civilization IV' would be better titled 'So

I am not at all new to SD (I have GCII, SoaSE etc) and I am wondering whether to get OD as well, or at least some of its sub-products. My question is, what benefits would I get from it, and why should I buy it? Yours sincerely, a very nice customer.

I reckon that there will be another beta, or at least a major update, before release. A lot of bugs/imbalances were found and a lot of good suggestions were made. They're likely to only give us a few days warning as usual [e digicons]:)[/e]

There are different ratings where I live (UK) but I don't play any 18+ games and only have 2 16+ games. My parents haven't banned me from playing them (or hadn't banned, seeing as I'm now 18) simply because they seemed to have decided years ago that I'm perfectly capable of working out what I should and shouldn't play. But its up to individual parents. Admittedly I played almost no games until I was 10 or so, mainly due to parental influence - they had figured that there wer

A temporary blocker is possible - msybe a 30 second block costing 150 antimatter for example. Then if you saw a monster fleet coming, you could give yourself enough time to get to the grav well with the starbase and put up a fight.

The only problem with this is that it would be incompatible with the 'extend the world' idea. In terms of a fantasy game, I think it would be more suited to a flat world, simply because in general fantasy lore, there is always an unknown land beyond the known world (see Lord of the Rings, Narnia etc). I'm more in favour of extend the world, but it would be hard to implement
I trust everyone involved though. The starbases and mines are just on the edge of being awesome, and as long as all of us beta tester keep giving constructive criticism, I'm sure by release time, this is going to rock!
Hear Hear

There will not be any more official GalCiv 2 expansions, but there's a fan-made mod/expansion which is roughly tabled to come out in a year or so (don't quote me on that). The AI in GCII is probably the best turn-based AI around, so if you go straight in on tough you are liable to get flattened if you haven't played it before. Check out the ship editor as well (that wasn't in GCI), it is essential to use it in order to counter your enemies' ships.

What I don't get is why this lot are complaining about Stardock and co making profit. OF COURSE THEY WANT TO MAKE PROFIT! If they didn't they would go bust! But that doesn't mean they aren't making games for our enjoyment as well. Also what I don't quite grasp is what would make you happy either? What do you want them to do??? Provide you support for free when they get nothing in return? Using an analogy to a used PC or car etc is irr

Best non-MMO non-Will Wright [inspired] game of 2008! Without Will Wright, EA would have probably lost what little credibility they still have left - there's no denying he's a great game designer (concept wise I mean - he didn't make Sims 2 he only did Sims 1) though I wish he would pick a better company to work for. Actually he did, they got taken over by EA...

They're not that useless! In my latest game a starbase held off a massive assault by practically the entire fleet of one of my enemies. I'd mined the other end of the space lane so it couldn't simply be bypassed (I'd simply take out the scouts and watch the fleet go kaboom at the other end). And its busy serving as a major trade centre (connecting my trade lanes). Of your points, I most agree with point 3, as long as they were VERY slow (oth
