One thing you might try is excluding the GalCiv folders from the real-time scanning. That would include both the folders in Program Files and in My Documents. I have an older version of Norton, it won't allow me to be selective. It's all or nothing. I guess I should get myself a newer version one of these days. I've been meaning to, but this still works so I haven't bothered.

Remember also it's essential to keep your graphics card driver up-to-date. Yes it is. Nvidia hasn't released a new versio since November and I have that one. I understand there's a beta driver kicking around, but I'm not willing to try it.

You haven't given any details on your graphics card and what settings you use in-game graphics wize (high resolution, AA, etc can cause slow downs at end game even on small maps). The debug.err includes some of this info. Nvidia Geforce 7950GT with 512 VRAM. Resolution at 1680 X 1050, which is rather high I admit, Anti-aliasing at 1. I used to have at 4 but I've been turning it down to try to get rid of the lag. I'll try none next. But I doubt it wi

Are you running anything else in the background? Not really, just my Norton anti-virus. I guess I'll have to get into the habit of turning that off if I play, at least in the latter parts of the game. Wouldn't pay too much attention to Task Manager. It's not the most accurate of monitoring tools. Well it's all I have, unless you'd care to recommend something better. But the performance I'm getting in-ga

I think the game auto ramps up to what your system can handle. You're getting improved performance for that hogging... I'd hardly call jerkiness and lag improved performance. Just the opposite in fact.

post the top part of your debug.err file and a someone might be able to recommend a solution. I've seen this file mentioned, where exactly do I find it?

my specs are a bit less than yours and I can run gigantic with 6-7 opponents no prob... Some lag in later game but that to be expected/ I'm running with 9 major races and 8 minors. No doubt that has something to do with it of course, I'm definitely maxing out the game. Still, considering the recommended specs, my system should be able to handle it with no problems at all. It is still playable, but it is rather annoying. If I try to quit the game I somet

Recommended: 2.2 ghz processor or equivalent - my 3800 is supposed to be almost double that, at least in equivalency. Supposedly the AMD is equivalent to it's number, 3.8 ghz in my case, though it registers lower. Mine comes up as 2.4 ghz, which is still higher than recommended 512 RAM - I have 4 times that amount 128 meg Video RAM - again, I have 4 times that So my system is way beyond what the game is recommending, yet I'm seeing these serious perfomance iss

I didnt realise the gold version of the game was already up to the latest build. It would just be common sense to assume that the latest release would be up to date. With any game I've ever owned, the expansion pack has always included the latest patches for the original game.

I was experienced some lag in my game so I decided to take a look at what it was doing via my Task Manager. I have an AMD 3800+, single core, and 2 gig of RAM and the game was pretty much maxing out both of them. No wonder I was getting some performance problems! Stardock should really take a look at this issue and find some ways of improving the performance. I guess I don't a map size bigger than Gigantic after all.

You need to have an espionage rating of at least High or may be Advanced. I'm not sure on which since I've stopped getting espionage altogether. But anyway once you've got a high enough level you can see what they've researched on the Foreign Relations screen under the Report tab. Same place it lists the *whys* of how your relationship is going with them. Yes, I managed to get the list from the Terrans last night. They don't seem to bother to much with

So what level of espionage do you need to reach in order to see what techs they have, and how do you manage to see them? Is there a screen in the diplomacy section where they're listed?

89 Replies 46,765 Views

I just had my spies steal a tech from the Terrans and I hadn't even reached an espionage level yet. Just a turn or two after that, I reached a low level with them. Unfortunately, it was Impulse Drive 1 and I already had Impulse Drive 3 from a trade I had made, so it didn't do me any good.

Now, you need to be more creative to use it to your advantage. Now that I'm getting used to it, I'm not finding it as bad I used to. I'm starting to understand what the AI will and will not go for. It is still possible to get some good deals, but at other times you have to be prepared to make some compromises. It could still use some tweaking, but overall it's much better than it was in the vanilla game.

Of your ideas, I most like lowering the morale bonus those two races get. They still have plenty of other advantages, and the morale helps them to have some of the better economies on top of everything else. Morale? They should be getting a big hit on Diplomacy. They should be the most hated races in the game, especially the Korath. Who wants to be nice with a race that wants to commit genocide to all other sentient races?

Worse is the fact that once I installed the older manual patch, it appears to have rendered my game unplayable. Now every time I try to start the game it tells me my CD key is invalid. I have tried entering this multiple times with no luck (gold edition of the game). First of all, why are you trying to install the 1.4X manual patch onto the 1.5 Dreadlords game that comes with the Gold edition? There's no need to update anything with the Gold, the o

I believe there is also a mod in the Library that lets you build repair bays on starbases to increase the rate. I could be wrong though There's one that came with the DL 1.2 patch as well. It was also included on the Gold edition release with DA. It was in an example mod that was included when Stardock first got the modding system fully functional, to give people ideas as to what was possible. There's a whole line of repair techs and ones that give more

I've been playing all weekend on crippling ... I don't know how you guys do it, I'm having a hard time just getting anywhere on Challenging. I've been trying out so many strategies to get my empire up and running, but there always seems to be at least one AI who's just one or two steps ahead of me, and who eventually leaves me in the dust. I'm getting better though I have to admit. It sure has taken me awhile though, especially have this latest patc

Popups that "freeze" the game but doesnt really pause it behind are also a major concern. This my pet peeve of the game! It is so damn annoying going into the stardock or details screen from a planet I have just established and then have some in game event come up and kick me out of it. I first have to deal with the event, then I have to track down the planet I was dealing with in order to finish whatever it was I doing in the first place. Sometimes I

I would like the save ships to hard drive option to be something I can select from within the ship designer itself. There are some basic designs that I would like to be able to save, but there are also minor modifications here and there that I don't. It would be great if I could just manually choose which ones I wanted to have come up in later games. So instead of just having a Save button when you're finished with a design, maybe have both a Save and a Use button, with the Use button just loadi

The destabilization is quickly detected and nuetralized so I never learn a GD thing. It takes time. As mentioned, the longer your spies are active in a race's empire, the higher your espionage level with that race becomes. But it usually takes a few tries before that happens. One thing that I noticed, if I target a building then try it again after the agent has been nullified, the next agent is quickly removed. But if I choose another target somewhere

Don't forget to take all of the prior techs too, AI's seems to give them for free and you can trade them all one by one to other AI's. What game are you playing? I have to sell my soul in order to get one of the AIs older weapons techs. Look at what I had to offer for Harpoon II. - Most importantly, I'm very eager to spread new planetary improvements to all AI's (including Terraforming techs which are quite highly valu

I personally haven't had much of a problem with tech trading in the latest patch . Yes some of the AI's are very picky, but I still find plenty of scenarios where the AI will give me what I want in exchange for sensors and a few hundres bc's. That's not what I'm discovering. There is the odd deal where I can make a fair exchange, more or less, but most of the time I have to sell my soul in order to get what I want. Granted, with 17 races in my game,

Well, you don't need Harpoon II that badly. Actually I kind of did, the Korath were up to Photonic Torpedoes. I was trying to catch up so I wouldn't be helpless in case he turned on me. He had already demanded tribute on a couple of occasions, which I refused. I was hoping I could at least skip a step.
