I am not a very experienced player, but when you get strong militarily, other races seem to become wary of further strengthening you. In the dialog panel, they tend to say things about their advisers warning against trading military techs even if you are on good terms with them. Had you been trading for a non-military tech, you probably would have had a much more reasonable deal. The same sort of thing happens even if I try for a something less threaten

I don't see the point in such a penalty myself. I prefer to upgrade ships, rather than trash them and build new ones. And sometimes it requires alot more than 10K in order to do so. So I'm going to be penalized for saving up the funds that I may need? That's a bit silly.

Most big planets get 4+ factories, 4 research buildings and a RC center anyway. You might be better off though putting those 4 Factories on a planet with a moon, and replacing them with Labs, if the planet has rings on it. A 10% bonus can amount to quite a bit if you stack buildings of the same type onto a planet. It doesn't matter with planets that have neither of course, but it does if those features exist. Provided of course there are no sp

Go to SDC's settings, and click the Refresh XML button in the internet section. that should get it to show up. If it still doesn't appear, go to the View menu and make sure that 'show pre-release versions' is checked. Are you getting tired yet, Kryo, of repeating that info?

Not evenly--who gets them depends on alignments (defeated evil races are more liable to just all turn pirate, IIRC). I like that idea. I think there should be more pirates in the game frankly. In Civ 3, I used to have this unit with a hidden nationality that I could use to harras my neighbours without having to go to war with them. The AI was quite fond of them too, sometimes too much in fact. It would build almost nothing but them. But it sure spic

Once you've got colonization underway though, it's not too hard to grab Sensors 1 and build a couple of cargo surveyors. Particularly on the bigger maps, this can really help in getting enough anomalies to fuel your economy effortlessly. Hey, good idea! I never thought of using a cargo hull that way. It would probably make a good scout vessel too. You could stick tons of sensors and engines on it, plus give it enough range to cross the entire map. I

I was trying to figure out how best to set up my planet's specializations between manufacturing, research and economy. And it occured to me that the choices are already built into the game. Planets with moons get a 10% bonus on their production, so they would naturally be the best for manufacturing. Planets with rings get a 10% bonus for research so those should become research planets. And ones with neither would be well suited as economy planets. Of course some exceptions have to made in the e

The gold edition does contain Dark Avatar BTW, in case that wasn't clear. But you'll have to uninstall your old copy of Dreadlords. It will install both Dreadlords and Dark Avatar at the same time, you can't just install the XP over your old version.

Perhaps 'easier' was the wrong word. The right word is tedious. The game is wrapped up, anyway Yes tedious would about describe it. When I won it, I was getting bored of the game anyway. Everyone was peaceful, no one was attacking. And I was so far ahead in tech I didn't really have to worry about anyone anyway, I had more and better ships than anyone else. But I decided rather than just quit, that I'd try the tech victory. Like I mentioned earlier

The Hi-Res mod that Logic Sequence made seems to have a major effect for some reason or another. Before I used it, special tiles were pretty much on every third planet I had; but now in my latest game, only 6 planets in my entire (original) empire's territory had ANY improvements at all! It has nothing to do with the High Res Mod. I'm running it too, and I'm getting plenty of specials. I guess you just aren't being very lucky.

Now that was an interesting one. I had a +700% Research tile, two +100% Research tiles, a +100% Manufacturing tile and a +100% Morale bonus tile, all on my homeworld. Unfortunately the star systems nearby really sucked so I hit Ctrl-N to try to get a better position.

Damn, I'm stuck with it. It's a medium hull vessel so I can't make any changes to it until later. Oh well, something to keep in mind later on.

30 Replies 21,584 Views

Actually, thanks for bringing that to my attention. It's occured to me that I've been ignoring that ship, just turning on the auto-survey right away and forgetting about it. I'm starting my games with Hyperdrive Plus, and I'm using a mod that gives me some points towards minituarization. So I could probably stick another engine on it and maybe an extra regular sensor. I'll have to look into that, it be even more useful than it already is.

There's a discussion going in another thread about that checkbox in Options that removes functional components in the ship design window. That should not be turned on by default. It's not good for newbies who are trying to get an idea of how to design ships. When I first started playing, I was baffled for the longest time how to best to go about it, since I wasn't able to use the default ships as a reference. It took me awhile to find that option and turn it off so I could have a look. Leave off

No offense, but why do they need ot fix it? Just turn it off. They have more important bugs to deal with, IMO. But they shouldn't have turned on by default. It's not good for newbies to have it like that, they're better off being able to take a look at the entire ship and how it's put together. When they feel comfortable with ship design, then they can choose to turn it on, for convenience sake.

You can use your survey flagship to scout, too. With a little micro, you can search out anomalies AND scout places you care about. They have the sensors for it. Yeah I know, but I prefer to put him on auto-survey and forget about him. I don't even have the found anomaly pop-ups anymore. Though I guess if I took care of him manually, he'd probably get whisked away by wormholes alot less often. I could just avoid them altogether. He always seems to ha

I've never had the patience for a tech victory since other victory options seem so much easier. How long did it take? Hydro It's not really that difficult, you just have to research down that one line. Though it might not be as easy now with the tech trading. When I won it, it was just a case of hitting Enter turn after turn. Any techs I needed for other things I just traded for. Really quite boring.

There's a tab on the planets list that will show you all the unowned planets. Just click one and it'll centre on it That's kind of an awkward way of doing tings for me. I may just end up clicking on a planet on the other side of galaxy that I'm not really interested in. I'd much rather be able to see it on the map, the same way

400 Replies 130,476 Views

I'd like to see all habitable planets with an extra ring around them while zoomed out. I usually play zoomed out as far as I can, and it's really easy to miss out on those PQ 1s,2s and 3s. And it's a bit of a pain having to mouse over each planet on the map in order to find them. I get really annoyed when the AI builds a colony near my territory on some PQ2 that I missed out on.

Don't underestimate how *many* colony ships you can build. And don't underestimate the "outward first" strategy... send your first ships out the *farthest* (unless they happen on a stupendously good planet), to beat the enemy to the planets between your civs and establish a beneficial outward border. Then fill in the gaps in between with your later ships. Yes, I've since changed my approach and now go for colony ships straight away. I can rush

30 Replies 21,584 Views

Well I'm glad to see you've figured out most of what you were doing wrong. Well I'm doing better in the colony rush anyway, though I'm still falling behind in tech. If I'm not number one, I'm usually second or third, behind races like the Thalen and Krynn. It's somewhat understandable with those guys given their bonuses. I usually cringe when I see the Thalen in the game, their cheap factories means they're able to crank out colony ships left, right and

There's a box you can check in your options that will automatically remove any functional components from a ship, and just leave you with the hull and the jewellry. It's turned on by default for some strange reason. It took me a long time to figure that one out. I just wanted to look at the default ships to see how they were built in order to get some ideas for my own. I believe it's under the Interface tab, though I'm not quite sure about that.
