Fun fact: Dol-Sirion in Sindarin is roughly translated as Head River, or Hill River. Perhaps "headwater" would be a better translation, however. Which brings up the more important question: will there be rivers, and will they be navigable? Rivers were the highways of the world until recent history.

My only wish for a cost-benefit system is smooth curves. I hate breakpoints from a design perspective, because it encourages min-maxing, giving distinct advantages to micromanagers. If benefits and penalties scale on a smooth curve (preferably not linear), then it comes down to tactics and strategy. The best "breakpoint" dependso on the situation: either the situation presented by the player, or--for good players--the situation created by the player.
Thanks Zubaz. Any chance I can add a feature request?
GalCiv2-style building tools for buildings will be awesome. Any chance for creature/unit creation with a similiar system? And don't worry, I promise not to yell "S****"; I know Stardock was working on this before that came out. :p
If you're adding quests, will there be a Quest Builder as well? If so, will it be available during the beta?
Oh, I see it now. It's a small preview window with the icon in the lower-right. Any chance I can get a preview display above the icon, like how WindowFX does it above the Taskbar? In general, I'd like the preview to be larger without making the icon zoom to 256 pixels.
Sorry, further clarification: on Windows XP, with WindoxFX, ObjectDock, and ObjectBar, I can't seem to get the "Taskbar" objects in ObjectDock or ObjectBar to display the preview windows. Does it not work, perhaps, with tabbed docks? Time to experiment some more...
Hey, you're right? I could have sworn it said +0 yesterday....must have been staring at the screen for too long. Cheers!
Is this only for Vista, or for XP? I'm running XP SP3 and can't seem to get a preview...might be user error, though. :)
Naturally, I'm also biased because I have 0 Karma. :p
LOL Rather, because spots on Beta-0 aren't guarantee, I'm holding off on pre-ordering. If they were guaranteed, I'd pre-order tomorrow. I can see why what I wrote was confusing, though. :p
Frogboy - Likewise, I've purchased a fair amount of Stardock software in the past few years, and would love to take part in Alpha/Beta-0/whatever. Ihaven't pre-ordered yet, partly because I'd like a spot, so to speak. I have a CS background and work for a software company, so I think the feedback quality would be there. Is the intent to keep the audience small just to be able to manage it more efficiently? Edit: I ask for reasons expressed better above.
With WindowFX, you can get a nice preview window of an application in the Taskbar on Windows XP. However, I can't seem to replicate this using the Taskbar functionality in either ObjectDock or ObjectBar. Is there a way to do this currently? If not, is it on the product roadmap?
I'm game to playing cloth first. I'm most interested, though, in getting my hands on the various builders. I guess I never out-grew legos...
It might be interesting for one or two of the factions to start off without a city, and without the ability to create one until they trade/buy/steal/capture the abiltiy from another player. However, they could start off with a large, war-like population. Think "German barbarians" around 300-500 A.D. Whole peoples on the move: that sort of stuff.
Is there any way (even via a config file) to change the default directory used by the various ObjectDesktop apps to store images, icons, windowsblinds, etc.? IconPackager has a setting under Settings > Advanced Settings, but none of the other apps seem to.
I like the idea a lot. It definitely helps the player suspend disbelief, as it were, and makes the world come alive (sorry for the cliche).
Have I mentioned lately that I love Stardock? Thanks a lot... Btw, fwiw take a look at my account and see how much I've bought over the past couple years...if SD continues with this sort of effective licensing (read: it's not a pain in my rear), I'll keep coming back.
Thanks a lot! I ended up picking up ObjectDock Plus for the tabbed docks. I'll have to play around with ObjectBar some.
Seabass - On a related note, for people running VMs on one piece of hardware, such as a laptop, where only one person is using the laptop at the same time, does one license cover that as well? I'm thinking about using VMWare sometime next year...
Is there any way to speed up the flyout menu? It always seems to take at least 1sec on my lappy (Core Duo 2.13 GHz, 2GB RAM, 7900GTX Go: and yes, very little is running in the background).
Is there any reason to use ObjectDock if I have ObjectBar? What's the real difference? Is there any reason to purchase ObjectBar Plus? (Why isn't it just included in Object Desktop 2009...?)
I think setting the debt limit as a percentage of income would be interesting, though maybe have a minimum (er, maximum) of -500bc. Just as in the real-world, large economies can run larger absolute deficits. Maybe even make some income worth more than others for this calculation. If your maximum debt was x * (taxes) + y * (tourism) + z * (trade), and z was very large, maybe the Korx could have an interesting advantage...
As an IT professional who really hates extraneous software, I have to admit: I've come to like SDC and Impulse. It's actually more convenient to use than not to use, though I do leave "fast-start" disabled (every MB or RAM counts when you're running multiple enterprise-grade applications). In general, I'm in LordAlexander's camp with "just give me the patch", but Impulse is actually convenient, fast, and doesn't break anything. -- Not a Fanboy
That worked.
