Even at a relatively short distance, say 9,300 miles (15,000 km), the fighter was crossing your field of view at 10 miles per second (16km per second) and you fired at the image in the viewscreen you would literally miss by a mile. The time for the light from the craft to reach you would be 1/20th of a second and the laser would take another 1/20 second to hit that point in space.
