2) Drop most nerfs and caps the game has. Let players play the way they want. I agree with Iztok (surprise). And this was exactly my point. This game thrives on sandbox mode, where you set up a galaxy you want, against opponents you want, and then play how you want. Perhaps the metaverse is the source of the greivance. I know for instance people defend using the endless Ctrl-N approach because they are, in theory anyway, "competing" with other peo

I find very large block quotes counter-productive. I'm responding to Reply #39 by Becephalus. 1. Well, you need to understand that the game has gone through a LOT of revisions to get to this point, and it wasn't always so. Morale buildings, for instance, are still useful in all versions of DL, but with a change in morale penalties for higher populations in DA they were moved out of ever being useful. If you are building them to breed faster, you do better with fertility clinics.
Thanks for the fix Cari. Still, has anyone, anywhere actually noticed a difference? That is, are your games now magically easier because the AI now doesn't "cheat"???? - Wyndstar
Whoa! One year?!? How did you pull that off, Wyndstar? Um, I was playing as the Altarians? If I had gotten any bonus tiles on my homeworld I could have done it in 0 years. Tech wins require no work but grinding the turn button if you know what you are doing. - Wyndstar
It's time for another update for Galactic Civilizations II and this time we've put our energy into not just adding new features, fixing various reported issues, and tweaking game balance. Oh goody. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us. + NEW: Computer AI updated to be better in diplomacy I have so many questions about what was actually changed. Any chance on a developer diary? Or was it more of a min
While I didn't think I could join in, I decided a tech win with the Altarians only takes me about 20 mins, and I could spare that to support the cause. ~ Cowering in their corner of the galaxy, the Altarians were surrounded by aggressive and competant neighbors. Trembling in fear, they resolved to do what any true coward would. They tried to imagine that they were not a weaksauce race ripe for the b
I haven't heard this in quite awhile. Fairly rare these days for someone to understand the reference. Well, I like to pretend I'm educated. I'm glad you got the reference. Given your profile picture, I thought you might. Also, if you're trying to bait me, it's starting to work. I would appreciate it if you would simply not even mention my namu (name) in connection with your original specious assumption I would ever do suc
But I also wouldn't mind having a difficultly level above Suicidal, so I'm biased. *Gleams* Yes! If we could have this over fixing this "bug" I would be all for it. In fact it is little feature changes like that I most look forward too. I would love a step or two slower than very slow research to be able to choose as well, for truly caveman like clashes. A higher level of difficulty. I would also like to be able to up the numbe
Vinraith - I agree with you completely, and much earlier in this thread voted against wasting resources on "fixing" it. It is a minor bonus at best that has rarely if ever effected me, let alone being an actual impediment to victory. However: if you save and reload each turn ... Why on Earth would anyone do that? It is my understanding from others that play Gigantic, all abundant maps with somewhere between 600 and 900 worlds that at
Come on, give me some credit here. Sorry, I was starting to get tired. Tone doesn't always come across appropriately in text. I meant no offense. At first glance, it looked like a lot of your questions were duplicative of issues already covered. For instance, I'm not sure which 2 turns the morale must be high to run an advanced government (right before election?). On your colony management screen, in the gover
if we can convince Wyndstar to join the nominee's things Oh, I'm convinced. At this point I think it is up to the council to approve my nomination though, because I come with a lot of special rules That being said should the MVC accept Wyndstar's nomination he would have my full support and i would even entertain pulling out as not t
Well, I think a lot of these answers can be found in the conversations of the threads I linked to. Still, I understand not wanting to take the time to sift through them for information. Here are some quick responses: 1) I see no actual question here, just a strategy statement. Am I missing something? 2) Yes, I think the advanced governments are worth it. You do not need morale buildings on your homeworld. Tax rate can be figured easily the same for all colonies if all your
if there were some way to tie into the actual purchase of the game (serial number or email address related to serial number), I support a fair election for all. However, asking people for their serial number to vote I do not support. You should never give your serial number to someone else, no matter how legitimate it seems. Email is another matter. With those you can set up a disclaimer about how it won't be sold to spam companies or otherwise m
This is so cool. And I love the humor. To be fair, the Iconians were the fourth worst in that tournament. They just happened to score almost as much as the bottom three combined (not quite though). The three you listed really did have a very sorry showing. No problem on stealing my language. If it works, why fix it? Good luck with this. Thanks for the honorable mention. - Wyndstar
Thanks for the show of support from some. Kind of a quiet day here at the office as I'm waiting for some important documents to be FedEx'd in, so I've gotten to hang out on the forums for the first time in a while. Look, I'd be happy to be on the council - and would accept a nomination. I would be happy to post a little "about me and my mission" statement like Neilo et all. However, as I stated once, my running seems like it has to come with a big asterisk - by the way, I'm g
Might I suggest the "Tournament of Losers"... Oh, I like that idea. My money is on the Altarians being the "top of the bottom" in that scenario. And, as long as I'm setting odds, Super Dominator is so much worse than Super Warrior, I'd have to think that somehow the Arceans could slip into second. - Edit - Interestingly, a representative from all three alignments made it into the bottom. And I think the Iconians should have taken the Altarian
As of Dark Avatar, the difference between a defender and the comparable heavy fighter is about nill, since the AI usually doesn't put engines on their attack ships. Well, then wouldn't an obvoius change be to actually PUT engines on ships intended to be attack craft? The slower the AIs ships are, the easier they are to beat. No matter how much attack a ship has, it doesn't much matter if you "kite" it all over the battlefield. I do that constantly. Why?
Wars should not always be won by filling your ships with Doom Rays though. Yeah, and that is the way it was when DA first came out. I'm glad that defense is stronger. So has it been confirmed that off-type is now degrading as intended? I don't have a copy of the beta or the time to test myself. That small weapon attack values are less worthwhile just adds to the arms race, and is actually an advantage for the AI, IMO. They can often be single min
What is your advice for speeding up planet development on a all-tech strategy? This is probably the hardest thing to get down, and requires balancing a lot of factors. If you have more worlds available than I did in this game, my strategy is >> get a few quick colony ships, colonize as much as you can, only build labs on my homeworld, let my new worlds breed until they are making lots of money despite my homeworlds reasearch needs. Then, when my economy has
Typically the colony rush, on my settings, is over after 30 turns, with everyone getting approximately 10 planets. IMO, this is not enough to make either strat work. Any comments? I got it to work with just two planets. Read my Altarian Rebellion AAR for a step by step description of getting this to work. Also, just for clarification. Does all fact/la
With an all factory approach there are a few things you can do: 1) Number of worlds. If you start to conquer early, the sheer number of planets (and therefore tiles) you bring under your control can make up for any shortfall. In addition, if you are conquering a lot early you will steal a good number of techs. All factory strategies research at a crawl when you have 2-20 worlds. When you have 100+, it is a breeze. 2) Go with research bonus +20%, tech party +20%, and then early g
Thanks all. I can't wait to do another myself, but at the soonest it will not be for several months. I'm hoping in the meantime that the Metaverse Council decides to run a tournament or two, but it looks like they are currently busy with elections. Things are going well with my trial, and I'm starting to get a really solid set of pocket briefs laid out - so I will be able to efficiently ambush my opponent with dozens of motions to disrupt any sort of flow they might get into. Still,
Well, it might be in poor taste to simply quote myself, but if you DO want a lot of math to back up your theory - I posted on this topic a while ago in The Death of Morale Buildings . I have never used a morale building since except in the very first few months of a game. Even then it is rare. As for if farms are worth it, that depends on your empire wide morale bonus, as that will pretty much dictate the
Mumble, that's an interesting idea. As I'm sure you know pretty well, I typically stick to playing Medium and smaller maps that only take me a few hours to play. There is no reloading, no recalculating my ZOC. I notice that both Livonya and purge who also report having conclusively seen this negative MCC effect also, AFAIK, both play on Gigantic all abundant settings. There is something else I noticed. In Thaumaturge's example he was trying to flip a planet with a 12b population. I
Are you aware that all-X also requires 3-4 times the money than the mixed approach? That's the real secret of advanced players Yes, you do need to find a way to pay for all of that production. With a mix (excluding upkeep, bonuses) of buildings you only need to pay 36bc/turn for five tiles with a mixed approach, vs needing to pay 90bc/turn for five tiles with an all labs approach, for instance. I think the basic problem th
