I have tried buying research labs early rather than factory early. That seems to be a wise choice, gets you speed 1 to 2 turns quicker. This in turn allows you to get to those planets quicker. Do you really nede the extra surveyors, or would upgrading your starting surveyor suffice. I ask, because I never have enough cash/time to do all the things you mention

I get your idea now. Economic > Research. Domestic spending 100% supported by strong economic > Rsearch at default 67% or whatever % that the weaker economy can support. + some interesting strats in forum ive read, leik from first turn, 1) Buy Research lab, Research Speed till impulse drive taking around 5 turns for federalist/economic race, with 3or4 labs bought from $. 2) military and social 0%, with domestic spending 100% until impulse drive.<

I use Federalist governments for that Economy boost. Well.. Just that im always into technology when im playing this kind of 4X game. Yeah FEderal and economic bonus race would solve the problem. But it's like economic helping the research and not the race itself to me ; /

Talking about powerhouse AIs. My powerhouse AI are always Arcean. Very low profile until mid game, and sudden growth in military and hence drop in friendliness. I have some in-game paly to ask of. Just playing Normal though, and it seems easy, as in AI has no threat at all as long as I have a good military. However, there's always some economy problem in the early part of the game during exploring/expanding where going tax by up to 50% - 55%, and having still having -100 bc per week. I had to minus the default 67% on spending to around 30% 40% to give a possitive income, but everything slowed down. I retire some game from this due to going bank
