Any news on it? I mean, are we looking at days or months for a release?

You'll probably have to wait for them to release the SDK to see what people can come up with.
And if your looking for beta testers, count me in! Indeed. So. We may not be able to get the SDK itself, if it's not ready, but is there any chance of getting some previews of how it works, or at least some details about it? I'm curious.
That's only for copyprotected videos, Dist. I've never had any problems. I set a 1920x1200 wmv as my background once with no issues.
I can see setting a Dream as a screensaver, but not the other way around. Screensavers are just .exe's that take command line arguments. So basically, when a screensaver comes up, it launches a fullscreen window, and draws on that.
I think the point is for Dreamscene to drive cool transitions and stuff behind the change.
How about WPF? I've got a relatively cool effect I created as a background for a custom media center/automation system I've been writing for myself. It'd be incredibly awesome if I could just take my background's (Just a usercontrol) .xaml file and compile it into a .dream.
