I have not found difficulty at all in playing one AI off of the other. I had been screwing around with the small map and 1v1 games with easy or normal AI. That got boring so I played though a few Med random map with pirates 3 normal AIs and myself. What I have noticed is that the first few missions most AIs give you are the give me x number of resource missions. I ignore those. Your already and 0% faction anyways its not gonna get worse. When I start getting destroy x number of shi

I am a huge Gal Civ fan and loved the Homeworld series. I pre-ordered Sins in the hope that I would be able to still participate in the Beta. It seems however that the beta is closed? Is there any way possible to still participate in the Beta?

Instead of building factories first try two economic buildings on each new planet colonized. Plant 2 econ buildings set the planet to social focus and forget it until it is done building those two buildings. The only planet I use to produce ships initally is my homeworld. The first planet that finishes its econ buildings that looks like it will be a good planet for ship production I start improveing in that direction. That planet and the susequent ones come on line soon enough that I can the

Congratulations all on achieveing the number 2 spot. I personally have been in the process of building a new computer. Its done now so I can finally play Gigantic games without the computer slowing to a crawl. I should post my first game from there soon. Its amazing how much quicker the game goes when you don't have to wait 30 - 45 seconds between turns.

Just a little addition to what Wyndstar typed for the home world. I typically start with my home world being all factories and the manufacturing capital. With a few asteroids adding to the production I can usually kick out a colony ship every other turn or so with military focus on. You could do this for a while and then as you near the end of the colonization phase convert it with one farm one morale building and the economic capital. I however usually like to make my first PQ18+ plant the

There was also a thread not too long ago about beating Masochistic. It one of the harder jumps to make, Crippling to Masochistic, that is. The thread is somewhere in the strategies section. Also instead of disabling the tech trading you might try disabling the tech victory condition. For myself on Masochistic I need the tech trading. I can keep up with the military or the tech I can't keep up with both. Not until I have a 2 to 1 advantage on the number of planets over the AIs.

You seem to mention a bunch of things as being cheezie. I would counter that by saying its sound tactics. As you play higher and higher levels of difficulty you will find these tactics are necessary. On Masochistic the computer has a 200% bouns to production to match that on a single planet you need 8 Economy Star bases around it. To even keep up in tech you need to be able to trade tech occationally. Going for Impulse engines early is almost necessary. In DA it might not be as n

I have been using the 3 point option. It makes PQ12 into PQ15s and it works when you conquer something as well as colonize it. It makes for a nice bonus. The AI terraforms the planet for you and then you conquer it and its PQ goes up even more.

I am currently n the same boat. I won my first attempt with Masochistic, then next start was the worse I have ever seen. My homeworld was in the far far corner with only one other system nearby (a total of 4 PQ 7-9 planets) I knew it wasn't going to be pretty but I played it out. I tried an early aggressive path to try to take some of the closest AI worlds (Thalens) I took 3 or 4 early planets but soon they had Beam 12+ Beam defense 3+ to my little Beam 3 ships. I saved it and will most like

I have to agree I rarely buy colony ships. There are occasions when I will but its rare. For example in my current game I found a purple star with 2 planets around it both PQ26. I colonized one, built a starport started a colony ship and then the next turn bought it. If you do buy them waiting for them to build a turn seems to reduce the cost enough that its worth the turn wait. In general I agree with tentleytea I buy factories and let the colony build the ships. Factories are cheaper to

It depends on how you like to play. I am a builder by nature. Once I have my fleets built and I am happy with the number of starships I have I switch my starports to building constructors. They continuously build constructors and starbases. I like getting them set up around my tech and production planets. You are right I could be building more ships and fighting wars more quickly but I prefer a longer drawn out game. I don't think at this point I am playing below way below my ski

One thing I try to do (you don't mention what your morale is at just your tax rate) is get my morale at 70% (or even 100%). You can grow your economy faster because your tax base grows more quickly. It sometimes seems counterintuitive. But I will lower my tax rate when my spending is negative. I will run 100% production and be negative most of the time in the first year. I use anomalies and tech trading to keep things going and try to keep morale above 70%. I will usually have 4 survey shi

Well got my Racial medal Now I can start playing the races I like v.s what I need to finish it. I did however find out there are more races I like than dislike.

I always have a number of planets building constructors. They build one starbase at a time and upgrade it to where I want it and then move to the next base. I set a rally point at the Starbase and then I set the rally points of the planets building the Starbase to that point. When that base is done I move the rally point and the planets start building the next one. I usually play loose clusters so I usually have a few stars with 10 or so planets. Half will build starbases for all the planet

Minor annoyance....when I go to set rally points the point gets set to the parsec that the tail of the pointer is in. It does not intuitively line up with the tip of the pointer like I expected. I got used to it after a bit but had to erase about half a dozen points because they got set in the wrong spot.

Yes, I found them I had to run my old laptop which had an older version of IE on it. That worked fine. It seems the page either does not work with the newest version of IE or something else is going on with my computer. I did at least get a character reqistered.

Ok, I can't seem to figure this out. I have tried to create a character to play in the Metaverse and it will not work. I go to the Edit my Character link and nothing works. I see 3 blank character slot but no way to edit them. I have tried using Firefox 2.0 and latest version of IE with no luck. What am I doing wrong?
