I don't have a opinion on "snobbishness" since the only reason I go to The Core is the private Team C forum. I play the trivia pretty regularly, but that's it. For me it's just a "show me where you be, and I'll come where you to". But since I've already registered at ToE, it looks like I'm already where you to. :)

I too played without tech trading, but have learned the advantage of using it. As Mumble says, you can sell one tech to multiple AI, including Minors. For major races I normally sell Xeno Ethics to everyone at some point in year 1. The AI doesn't like parting with weapons tech, but will part with infrastructure techs. In the current game I'm playing I traded Xeno Ethics with everyone. This netted me all manufacturing techs up to Industrial Sector, research techs up to Invention Matrix, and econo

I'm with CalifDude. I hate Mega Events, and I see no reason they should be turned on in the MVL games. I never turn them on except when required for MVL games. I've been lucky and never got the Jagged Knife event but if I did, I'd be ticked off. Did I mention how much I hated Mega Events? (:( FYI. Turning off Mega Events does not disabled the Minor Events like populatation/economy/influence decreases/increases, etc.
That's it. Simple and direct with the desired result but without going into all the possible methods by which a games effective difficulty could be less than reported. What do people think about this proposal?
Well, it's kinda of subjective, but it's probably the best we can do, short of mandating race and opponents.

I'm surprised as well. In the past, when I've used straw dogs, that was not my experience. BTW, I used Altarians vs. Arceans, Torians, Humans, and Krynn in round 7. I won't be using ARC or straw dogs for any further rounds either.

To clarify, I just posted my opinion. As far as a vote, I abstain. It doesn't matter to me which way this goes.

For the record, I never used ARC, but I have used straw dogs in the past. I thought I needed an advantage when making the leap from Crippling to Suicidal. Turns out that was unnecessary. If your level of play has reached the point where you can beat a straw dog on suicidal, then your game is good enough to win against stock races. Hence, I don't use straw dogs anymore. That being said I'm siding with all or nothing. Either we mandate race and opponents, or it's a free for all. If it's a free fo

Has it ever been brought up to assign what race must be played and who your opponents are? I'd like to see something like, Torian Revenge. Torians vs. Drengin, Korath, and Humans. Or some other themed round. Something loosely based on the mythology of the campaign. That would certainly get around our current discussion and may help players in the MVL learn new playing styles. I, for one, have not played all races. It would certainly challenge me.

I don't see a problem with this. If we allow "straw dog" opponents, this should be allowed as well. In case you don't know what a "straw dog" opponent is... In latest MVL round, round 7, we must face 4 opponents. You could set up 4 custom super-traders with the Iconian AI, and give them crappy abilities and starting techs. Even at suicidal these "straw dogs" play a lot easier than pre-defined races.

I have never read this strategy anywhere and was wondering if anyone else uses it. When I create a new ship I sometimes create 2 versions of it. The exact same ships but one is called, let's say, SHIPA and the other SHIPB. If a SHIPA gets damaged, bring it to a safe place and upgrade it to a SHIPB. One turn later and it has full hit points. On the grand scale of things it's cost effective. If it's a high experienced ship it's really helpful to get it back into battle quickly.

If everyone is having trouble, I must have got lucky. I took the Altarians and put all my points into research, economy, and morale. My homeworld had 700% and 300% research bonuses. Very close to my homeworld was a research resource and an economic resource. One minor race was on my doorstep. I took him out in year zero. There was a class 1 planet very close, which I settled after getting Soil Enhancement and Habitat Improvement. It ended up a class 16. Wisp was settled by my initial c

I very rarely play Giga just for that reason. I tend to play medium and complete a map in a week. That being said, I posted another game last night. 91350. Cheers

Several posts happened as I was typing up my reply above. No worries Mumble, I too did not think you were questioning, but were seeking some insight. I forgot about the Space Miner trick. I did use that ploy. Editted to add this. One more thing different in DA; the ability to launch ships from a planet in any direction. It's tedious but you can move a ship into orbit and then launch it from the other side, saving 2 movement points.

Thanks Wyndstar. I didn't play all-labs. I played all-factories. Therefore never got near Concepts of Malice. Hence no MCC. It makes sense now. As for what was common in my 0 years wins (I did 6 different maps), here's what I think. BTW, the AI did not surrender in any game I played. 1. DA has hostile environment planets. None of those were colonized in any of the games I played, so the AI had less planets. 2. DA has hostile environment planets. The AI wasted it's time

Well played everyone. Now that this round is over... Wyndstar, how did you get that great 0yr score? I'm still trying to figure it out. Ferrel.
