I feel your pain...I experience the same crash behavior. Once a game reaches a certain point, a crash is unavoidable. I have two different saves that will crash one player in 30-60 seconds, without fail. Different sized maps, with different numbers of players. It's really frustrating, and it's killing a game I'd like to be playing.
