I found that if I had enough money and some decent mid-level weapon and armor techs, I'd turn off all research and social building, dump everything into military production, and crank out fast, small ships with whatever money I had saved up. Swarms of smaller ships, as Mystikmind posted up there, seem to do better against the one hulking capital ship than you would think. I just bought GC2 the other day, and am quite impressed.
