I recently installed GC2UE in Windows 8.1 and when starting the game from the launcher, I get a registration window that doesn't work (a classic Stardock application issue). The issue seems to be that the activator can't get access to the "C:\ProgramData\Stardock Games" folder to write the .bin file for the serial number, even when using "run as administrator". Here&

The issue seems to be that the activators can't get access to the "C:\ProgramData\Stardock Games" folder to write the .bin file for the serial number, even when using "run as administrator". Here's the method I had to use to get the GC2UE activation to work for me in Windows 8.1 (64-bit): download the zip file containing the legacy activation files. extract the file, copy all of the files from the extracted location into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\Ga
yep, that's it. if i rename that file, SSE works fine. if i change it back to iprepair.dll, i get the COM error. nice. thanks for the help, now i can play instead of trying to figure this out.
well, i tracked down the application that's causing the error. it appears IconPackager v3.0 is the culprit. game runs fine until i install that and reboot, then i get the COM error. the first time i tried it after i figured out which app, i uninstalled it, rebooted, and SSE worked again. so i reinstalled it (and rebooted) to reproduce the error, which it did. this time, however, when i uninstalled IP and rebooted, the COM error didn't go away (and won't, from what i've seen with this problem. th
also, it says something about "deleting the file C and re-activating." i'm not sure what the "file C" is...
so, after a loong break due to RL concerns, i have been putting time into SSE again. i managed to get it to run under XP for awhile, after doing a repair installation of Windows. from what i can determine, it seems to be a problem related to DirectX, and though i'm not really certain what part, i think it's DirectSound, judging from searches i've been doing. anyway, the repair allowed it to run a few times, but it's happening again. since reinstalling DX is not really possible short of
sooooooooo........ not fixed. after downloading the 75.17 patch... same error. i tried uninstalling *everything* i could find, and re-installing...no change. /sadface haven't had much time to look at it...having to do a 45-minute download each time i install really drags the troubleshooting out. mostly i've had other stuff occupying my time, but tonight and tomorrow i will have a bunch of time to keep hacking away at it. not really sure how to proceed, though.
it was a really strange error, i just lucked into figuring it out. i find it really strange that vista had no problems with the same situation. right now i'm not 100% certain it's fixed because i had to wait until today to get activation reset. i'll have to check tonight after work to make sure it's going to start, but getting the activation dialog is a new thing, and i think that means it's fixed. meanwhile, i've been playing in vista! it's sweet and runs quite well on my "ancient" Ath
figured out the COM error....or i think i did. so, yes, i have activated too many times. but the COM error was a hardware configuration issue, so it must have been a Windows error. it appears to be fixed now, as i unplugged the front USB header cable from the COM port on my board (OOPS! the USB and COM headers look nearly identical, i got sloppy when i switched cases recently.) now i get an activation dialog when i start the game in XP. YAY!
is the patch coming out today and if so what time in GMT? It is and right........................................................... NOW! if the patch is out already...i'm not show
alrighty, worked great under vista. nice to finally get to check it out a bit. i'm definitely impressed with the performance under vista, so far, but i haven't really put it to the test too much, yet. going back to xp, i'm still at the same point. i tried another install and still get the COM error. UPDATE (12:20 PM PDT): ok, i installed the patched version, and i noticed some different stuff, including a whole new error (this one even has a number!), but ended up at the same p
We have a special exe for you to try, but it won't work until you get the patch data. Please email [email protected] once you have patched (unless that fixes your problems) and we'll send you back the exe. great! i will do that. in the meantime...i installed it under Vista and it works!! w00t! i can play now, at least, and it'll be useful to be able to compar
Try turning off the intro movies as well. Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting\user.setting in notepad and change ShowIntroMovies TRUE to ShowIntroMovies FALSE. ok, after latest re-install, same problem, BUT there's no Ironclad Games folder in my Application Data folder. don't think there ever was one, either. there's one in the "All Users\Applicat
Try turning off the intro movies as well. Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting\user.setting in notepad and change ShowIntroMovies TRUE to ShowIntroMovies FALSE. ah, thanks...i was wondering where the settings files were stored, but i didn't think to associate "ironclad games" with SSE. i'll poke around in there later and see if i can make some prog
i've re-installed a couple of times, installed .NET 2.0 (though i'm certain that has nothing to do with it) and updated my Forceware to 160.02. after that, my gf demanded time and i haven't had a chance to start it up again yet. if there's a patch coming today, i'll try a full re-install tonight and hopefully that will fix things. it's an odd error...i don't really think it's a Microsoft er
re-installed...no dice. no log in event viewer. smartexception doesn't catch anything. it's the very first thing that happens. also interesting to note (though unrelated i'm sure) that my return key doesn't work in these posts.
Athlon XP 2.2GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Gefoce 7800GS AGP, Creative SB Live! 24-bit, XP SP2/DX 9.0c, Forceware 101.09...haven't tried reinstalling...yet.
...hopefully it's something with my system that i've missed...
i installed beta 2, fired it up, or tried to, and i get "Failed to initialize COM" error. i select either "skip" or "skip all" and the screen goes black for a few seconds then returns to the desktop. that's it. my system is more than capable of running this game, and the software is all up-to-date. i'm a bit put-off that i paid $50 for this. i understand it's a beta, but that's why betas usually don't *cost* anything.
