I would say i like a mixture of both as lots of skins fall in that category. Cool looks and functionality.
I think i came in back when StyleXP was a good platform for desktop customization. Worked good then. Diiference between Windowblinds and Curtains is great. As stated they will not work together. If i remember correct if you apply a Curtain skin it will close out Windowblinds and revert it back to default windows. Somebody correct me if i am wrong.

Another look. Windowblind is Quantum Mek by Lightstar recolored. The gadget is mine DC-8G. Wallpaper was just created and yet to be released.

I never use my desktop wallpapers on my phone. i have a black woodgrain and its stays there. As what was already mentioned there are already tons of apps for that.
Gadget is my own as well as wallpaper. Windowblind is Lightstar's Exploration recolored for my use.
Always playing music here as well. Most you mentioned i like.

Many features of sysmetrix is broken now with the newer windows builds. Used to have weather and a lot more. I skinned the heck out of it long ago under the alias "dcrewchief57" explored about all the capabilities.

I guess to answer your question sizes, I do look at resolutions available. when ya jump up to 2560, a 1920 wallpaper will be fuzzy. So yes i look.
