PDC, for Professional Developer's Conference, is designed for developers (i.e. nerdy people like me). It's where Microsoft is going to show off the cool stuff that it has in store for developers in the coming years. What I'm going to try to do is explain what is happening and how it affects regular users. The things being shown today will one day be things everyone has to live with. Today was the first day. A lot of what was shown today at PDC is hard to describe since it was so visually

BTW, if you look at page 6 of that report, the trend on taxes is pretty clear. The current economic down turn may be bringing us "respite" (so those "rich folks" aren't making as much money and hence not as much money to tax) but the tax trend is pretty obvious.

Re cherry picking: Well for starters, you COULD pick a date that was PRIOR to the existence of the redistribution programs: Social security, medicaid, medicare. That would be a nice start. By cherry picking, I mean you literaly pick dates that all take place during the period that the issues I am lambasting exist. Most of American history existed without redistribution of wealth. Is the federal government really doing that much more today for the average citizen to ju

Do you hear that flush? It is the sound of the Sci-Fi channel taking the potential fan base support of Battlestar Galactica and sending it down to the nether regions. The more I hear about it, the more convinced I am that it is going to suck. Not suck in a slightly disappointing way but suck in such a massive way that in 10 years we'll look back and put it up there with Star Trek 5 and Battlestar Galactic 1980 as chapters in science fiction that we feel required to for

I am a big believer in democracy. I'm not a fan of just giving a say to those who don't pay their share into the treasury getting to have an equal say in how that treasury is spent to those who provide most of it. Re Sales Tax: sales taxes are at least fair. You spend money, a percent goes to the government. it affects everyone equally. But it's not germane to our discussion on FEDERAL taxes. Re who make up the top 5%. There are plenty of small business owners who don't make

It's not your fault. Debating by written communication is very hard even when you are fluent in the language that the debate is happening in. When it's your second or third language, it becomes really hard. Regarding scoring -- that I can't say. The scoring system is sitll in flux. It shouldn't be possible to get a negative score so I'll have to look into that.

Russell: You've got some selective statistics use there. Sure, our tax RATE is lower compared to 1950 when they were still near World War II levels. But taxes, as a % of GDP are actually higher. But the tax RATE isn't the problem anyway, the problem is the concept of taking money from one family to give it to another via coercion. I noticed that the person you quoted says that "Conservatives, lie a lot" when it comes to tax stats. You did note where I got my stats

Sanity from the Left is the 6th most popular blog here on JoeUser. In fact, looking at the top 10 you have: Mine (1), a developer's site, another developer's site, AnthonyR's (right wing), another developer site, and then a left wing site and then another left wing site. As for what gets posted on the home page, I try to choose things that people are likely to be interested in and is presented well. Not to be critical but your writing doesn't come across as if English

Brab, to me, represents lazy debating. Rather than debate the issue himself, he'll link to some article and demand that people refute THAT article. I'm not some robot. I'm not going to go off running at command to refute every far left article on the net. If Brab has a point, he should make his point in his own words. I mean, what the heck does the UK having a seat on the security council and the EU have to do with anything? So does France. I know Brab didn't ask me to answer that issue

Every week I'm going to try to find cool things from around the web and share with you. On the computer, my favorite thing to do is skinning. Or more to the point, I really like to tweak up Windows XP to match my own insane way of doing things. The best way to do that is with Object Desktop . Not just because my employer makes it but because it really is the best way to do this sort of thing. Another good program to have is Cursor

According to this article at The Register , TabletPC sales are terrible. Which is not surprising at all to me. What is surprising is that they are trying to blame Microsoft for the poor sales. The OEMS basically have 3 main reasons why TabletPCs aren't selling: Cost. Microsoft is over char

One of the things that is frustrating when debating liberals is that their hatred of Bush blinds them to logic and reason. I don't recall hearing any of the hysteria from the left when we attacked Serbia and that was purely for humanitarian reasons. Yet Saddam made Milosovich (sp) look like a saint. They've already found mass graves that contained dolls and even more chilling, dolls (which means the children were killed while clutching their dolls). Not mass graves with 500 people in

Thanks guys. Sometimes the strangest things can leak resources. For example, SpamPal leaks handles sometimes. I'll notice my system getting slower and slower or I'll notice that programs won't launch anymore or dialogs won't come up. When I do the check I list in the article, I see that SpamPak is using 9,000 handles or something and kill it, restart it and all is fine.

Alex: 1) The US can only fight 1.5 to 2 major wars. That doesn't change the fact that the US can project significant military strength to quite a number of hot spots. The US is still quite capable of deterring Chineese invasion of Taiwan while ensureing NK doesn't attack South Korea while putting pressure on Iran and keep India and Pakistan from going to full out war. 2) The French could not have attacked Iraq because they lack the logistical ability to move their (ahem) "army"

I've been having a fairly heated email discussion with regards to whether different races of humans have significant intelligence differences. On one side there are people who believe that natural selection over the past 50,000 years has shaped humans in different regions of the world to adapt to local environmental factors. The net result is that Europeans and Asians had environmental factors that called for higher intelligence. I don't happen to agree with that. I do not t

Man do I have a case of the blahs. I sometimes think I have the dullest life imaginable. But I think the real problem is that my job is my hobby and so when I get sick of that, what's left? I'm not sick of my job per se, just want a change of pace but things are so busy this past week. We've got DesktopX 2 going out the door on Monday. I gotta do the press release for that and then do the Object Desktop 2004 media guide. There's a bunch of documentation stuff. Clearly, th

"UN needs more power" More power to do what? Who is going to provide it this power? Why would the United States want to lend the UN more power when minor states like France wield so much power on it?

0 Replies 2,465 Views

American Conservative, The UN authorized US action in Iraq -- Iraq broke the terms of the cease fire of the 1991 Gulf War. Now, please, let us know specifically what rights they are going without.

0 Replies 2,465 Views

Jowell, your knowledge of events is problematic. What "international law" did the US break? What "basic human right" is violated in Gauntanamo Bay? But your argument only strengthens the argument that the UN is a pointless waste of time.
