Man, I got so used to .rar files I have to remember not to upload my mod in that - seems a lot people have never heard of it. Convertdata.exe is a command prompt executable. That means you have to start it from the command line (for windows XP thats: Start->Run-> type cmd in the box and press enter) I suggest using gui interfaces Teal mentioned, they're much more user friendly.

That's because the entity files are normally in binary format, you need to convert them to .txt format so you can edit them. Use ConvertData.exe from the mod tools, you should find it in your Sins installation directory.

And why would someone's artistic skills be worth less than someone's hardcore gaming skills? If anything the first is far more creative than simply being able to headshot someone while jumping from behind a corner. I just differentiate, that's all. You could argue that "hardcore" means being very good at playing a game of course, which means you can be hardcore at playing Pacman, and I can't really argue with that. But then you can also say someone is hardcore in Spore or Lego
New patch this doent work again. Annatar we need ya. Needs a patch update to 1.04. It won't work no more even without the gameinfo and mesh folders.
Then it seems they changed the particle files. I really hope the mod updater utility will handle that, because otherwise someone will have to go through ALL the particle files (and there are a lot of them) and change what's needed.

Untill I get a definitive answer whether the existing developer exe is compatible with the new version of the game or not, and if not then untill I get my hands on a new version of the dev executable, I can't patch my game because it would screw with my mod work big time. So if anyone is willing to test this out and get back to me, I'd appreciate it!

I link hardcore strictly with the skill needed to play. Be it motoric skills, cognitive skills or combination of both, doesn't matter. That means I think there are games where you can't be a "hardcore" player even if you spend every waking hour playing it. Like Sims, for example. ;)

I believe there were so far three Extinction Events in Earth's past. I think one of them pretty much wiped out 95% of all life on the planet. And yet, as you say, life bounced back. I would however, attribute that more to the incredible resilience of life itself, than to being favoured by something or someone. As for the asteroid impact, there are many shows on Discovery, and some tend to be a little... flamoyant. As far as I know, the Extinction Event caused by the asteroid impact wa

Errr... no. A red dwarf is a star. you don't need an infrared telescope to see it, because it emits its own light. Furthermore, red dwarfs are relatively cool stars, definitely cooler than our own sun. Thus, for the thermal effects to be noticeable, the new star would have to be very close to our system - so close in fact that you would clearly be able to see it in daylight with the naked eye. A brown dwarf, a gas giant so big its on the verge of nuclear fusion, but not quite, is a re

Well, if the whole system is warming, then its the sun. It can't be a nearby passing star because I haven't noticed any extra giant flaming balls of fire on the sky lately. ;) And of course, if another star came that close to our system we'd have bigger issues to worry about, like being rammed by Jupiter or something like that.

Yeah, but currently there is no way to actually make the lack of AM cause any detrimental effects on, say, jumping. Plus, using AM as a "fuel" also makes it necessary for the player to micromanage their fleet. For example, you have to make sure each and every ship uses their special abilities only when you want, otherwise they might end up depleting their AM reserves and get stuck for a while when you need them elsewhere. On the other hand, if you make the AM regen very quickly in fri

Well, to obtain the level of detail I need for my models, I usually resort to sculpting a low-poly version of the model in Zbrush where I up the poly count to say 10 million polygons in total. I get the bump mapping and color textures from that, and also cavity textures which accentuate small cavities in the surface by adding shadows to them (something simmilar to an occlusion map rendered in a 3D package). If necessary I get the occlusion maps from the 3D package, in my case its XSI. <p

Oh, and you can't have a hardcore game on a console, except maybe an arcade or a driving game. Everything else is either too simplified or too clumsy because of the controls. Whichever the case, you simply cannot model the level of flexibility a mouse+keyboard combo gives you in shooter games (hence the autoaiming in many console shooters) or the staggering amount of controls a keyboard can get (for example when you need to prime the engines of a B-29 before igniting them so that you can actu

If you want a hardcore FPS, try Red Orchestra. One shot, one kill, even with a pistol if you hit the chest or head. You can't bunnyhop, you can't run like a madman and expect to survive a machine gun emplacement, you can have your weapon knocked out of your hands (if you're lucky), or have a grenade blow off both of your hands if you're not (because you can't even pull the pin on the grenade and run for that enemy bunker). When sniping you have to take gravity into account (well, I so

I'm talking about layers, compositing, etc. Then there's stuff you can't do with any 2D image editor, like Z-Brush texturing and s

No, its either all ships belonging to an individual race, or none, at least as far as I am aware. *edit* **ah well, so much for my updatedness** :)
